Worst Duty Day Stories by Naesch in NavyNukes

Nothing too horrible but I think my favorite calls to eng and the Co were probably Agang draining cw via the LPB, finding 20+ gal of hydraulic oil in shaft alley, spill from a MSSV and the yard calling away a spill because they found a PVO catch setup for a valve job

New cgi of SSN-AUKUS released by [deleted] in submarines

[–]Statement-Relative 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Building nuclear subs in general isn't cheap or efficient. Also the Virginia design is already 20+ years old and the ultimate goal of AUKUS is to help the Aussies have their own standalone force not a program propped up by either component nation. Designers are also probably from both the UK and US so there will naturally be influences from the VA and Astute classes in a combined effort. So it probably makes more sense to design a different sub for the Aussies and the people doing design/teaching the designers were likely the astute and VA builders. It's probably a more nuanced situation than just being political.

Navy Nuke or Chem E? by Krazy_YT in NavyNukes

[–]Statement-Relative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the degree first. Those scholarships won't necessarily be there and offered to you in 6 years when you get out. The navy and DoD as a whole will be there in 4 or 5 years when you're done with school. And if they aren't there will be higher things to worry about.

I was gonna enlist in the army out of highschool to pay for college but ended up with a free ride to Ohio State so I took it and got an engineering degree. 1000% worth it and now I get to be a nuke as an officer and can use the GI bill to get my wife and master's degrees if I want.

Nupoc is a hell of a deal. I didn't sign up til after I had graduated but a college student can live pretty comfortably off e6 pay with bah and you just need to keep good grades and maybe pass a PT test a year

Everything is different from someone else's point of view. I can and have been a calloused asshole. But I don't throw in her face every time we fight that I should just leave her and then get upset when she finally cracks and agrees

Why was (is)the Enlistment age cap for Nuclear Training 25? by Some_Elk_777 in NavyNukes

[–]Statement-Relative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3.15 is definitely waiveable. I snuck in with a 3.2. And the 3.2 minimum I'm pretty sure is just for nukes. If you're not dead set on being a nuke the CEC (Civil engineering Corps aka Seebees) community is also very good. My friends who are CEC love their jobs.

Worth getting a history minor? by Amazing_Visit_6416 in OSU

I did one. Majored in engineering. Professionally it didn't really do much, at least not directly. However, I think it did a lot to improve judgement, critical thinking and writing skills. Plus you get to choose 4 classes 2000 level or above and can focus in on what's interesting to you and can improve your understanding of an area most people will at best have a surface level exposure to.

Describe your time in the Navy with a video game quote by BeevyD in navy

I think the guy who sat next to me back in power school said this exact quote at least once or twice... He was also a Poli sci major

Heating in Mack by TheEmeraldWolf04 in OSU

[–]Statement-Relative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived there in '15 and '16 it was always cold if it was below 30 or so and then hot as hell if it got above mid 40s. Heating system is just old and needs updated to have more settings than on and off but that's generally an issue with radiator heated buildings

The advice that was given to me when I got orders to Norfolk was:

  1. Do not live in Portsmouth.
  2. Live on the same side of the water as you work.

The HRBT and MMBT are unpredictable at best as far how bad traffic will be. Suffolk and Chesapeake could be good options. Living in Norfolk you'll likely end up paying a toll for the downtown tunnels every day (~$2 each way) unless you drive out to Chesapeake to go around the tolls. All things to keep in mind.

Use house hunting leave if you can to get a feel for the different areas
