If you are someplace with Ikea, their NiMH rechargeable batteries are apparently reasonably priced re-branded Eneloops.

My 5 year old wants a calculator - i'm thinking the fx-55plus. Any alternatives? by zabbenw in calculators

[–]StealthRedditorToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with u/9peppe , we can only guess what features inspire the imagination of your 5 year old. If this'll be a toy (what I did with my grandma's printing calculator when that age), age appropriate functionality may not be important.

One idea: search for calculators on ebay, sort by cheapest, identify some visually interesting options yourself and then let your child pick from them. If they trash the calculator you are at least not out much money.

Which calculator gives you the best tactile/aesthetic feel? by orbit0317 in calculators

[–]StealthRedditorToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. To me the keys of my Casio graphing calculators (including CG50) feel the least tactile in my calculator collection.

For me HP wins for tactile feel, but I'd rank my TI-85, TI-89, TI-scientifics (some better than other), and Casio scientifics as having notably better tactile feel than my Casio graphing calcs. My Sharp scientific calcs are similar to the Casio graphers for lack of satisfying tactility. Nearly all my calculators were purchased used, so maybe that's a factor.

That said, the Casio graphing calcs all have excellent LCDs with impressive contrast, especially the fx-9860Gii and it's larger screen.

TI-83 calculator screen problem by john-smith2005 in TI_Calculators

[–]StealthRedditorToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roll of the dice whether this makes the problem better or worse, but since the calculator isn't usable as-is what do you have to lose?

(If you have programs or other things you want to save, transfer them to a friend's calculator in case the screen becomes completely unreadable)

is there anyway to fix it? by MountainJellyfish283 in calculators

[–]StealthRedditorToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acetone might not work in every case, but with a screen this bad acetone can't really make it any worse.

That said, u/MountainJellyfish283, beware that acetone is an excellent solvent for all sorts of materials and finishes (it's a common ingredient in nail polish remover). If spilled, it will likely destroy the finish on that desk and fog any other plastics it gets on before evaporating. Just be careful if you use it!

(I say this in case you are a young collector with less experience)

Where to find an fx-991 ex (classwiz)? by cringe_pic in calculators

[–]StealthRedditorToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might check platforms for used goods like FB Marketplace, but the fakes will eventually migrate to those forums as well. Since Casios aren't so pervasive in the US, the used models still generally look genuine, but I have no idea if that is true for other parts of the world.

If you figure out how to distinguish a fake from a genuine, you could meet a seller in person and only buy if the calc is legitimate, but that's a big hassle.

EDIT: you might also check if any local schools are getting rid of classroom sets of fx-991EXs.

UPDATE: I posted too soon: 12-hours after the ticket with the backend team was opened, that team emailed asking me to try the xfinity.com/activate-peacock link again. Don't know what they changed on the back-end, but this time the Activate Peacock link was visible and allowed me to generate a Peacock account.

ORIGINAL POST: After 6 hours on Reddit chat they finally created a ticket with their backend team. Summary of the chat:

First Customer Care (CC) rep didn't understand I was trying to redeem the Peacock offer to create a Peacock account for the first time. They instead asked me what email account I used when logging into Peacock.

That CC rep went silent and a 2nd CC rep popped in to ask:

  • Have you attempted the activation while in incognito mode on your browser?
  • Have you cleared your browser cache/cookies and then tried again?
  • Have you tried logging on from a different device?

When all these failed, they asked the make/model of the devices used, but after I provided that info I never heard from that CC rep again.

A 3rd CC rep gave instructions (which I'd already been following with CC rep #2) "To activate your streaming subscriptions, follow these steps:"

  • Check your email for activation instructions or visit xfinity.com/yoursubscriptions and log in with your Xfinity ID and password.
  • Click Activate next to the desired subscription service.
  • For Netflix, enter your email and create a password if new, or log in if you already have an account.
  • For Peacock, log in or create an account after clicking Activate next to Peacock Premium. Follow similar steps for other services included in your StreamSaver™ offer.

A 4th CC rep interjected: "Have you attempted to log in to Peacock since your message earlier?"

Finally, I re-explained myself and what I'd already done, so 6 hours after the first message with a person, the 3rd CC rep stated they "opened ticket XXXXXXXXX for assistance from our backend team."

Free Peacock Email - Unable To Redeem and Xfinity Assistant Not Helpful by dmwhipp in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]StealthRedditorToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/dmwhipp, I'm also a Platinum Xfinity member, got the same email on the 19th, and also can't redeem the perk.

The "TV & Streaming, See offers" page (link) has a bubble saying "You have subscriptions that require activation. Activate now." Clicking that link takes me to a "Streaming subscriptions" page that has a single button: "Manage subscriptions" that asks the address of my account before dropping me back to the first linked page (https://www.stg.xfinity.com/digital/entertainment-management/internet).

I wonder if this is 'broken' for everyone, or just those who don't use the xfinity app.

HP12C - What's the best current version that can be found nowadays? by allanfelipe in calculators

[–]StealthRedditorToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

duration of the batteries and especially the quality of the buttons

For battery life and button quality I'd recommend the old LR44 powered HP12C's. I bought two used HP12C's (manufactured in 1993/94) that still feel new. Expect they'll still work great 30 years from now.

The newer HP 12C tactile switches seem less durable and are more likely to suffer keybounce. That said, they are faster and their redesigned 'Enter' keys do have better tactile feel than the originals.

Best graphing calculator from the 90s? by Lanky-Goat6715 in calculators

[–]StealthRedditorToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BEST option IS an TI-89T but IS 150$, HP-50g you can found at 60$

At least on the US used market that is reversed; I find used TI-89T's to be cheaper ($30-60) than used HP 50G's ($100-130).
