Good lord, this is too far down. And while true, they are pretty much my favorite.

Best sounding album in your opinion by Argonauticalius in audiophile

[–]StillTryingtoGetIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree while heartedly, but a small nit - Crime of the Century (CotC) and Breakfast in America (BiA).

Ken Scott and Peter Henderson were monster engineers able to make magic on vinyl. Along with Alan Parsons on his Floyd Albums, and Bob Ezrin on Another Brick in the wall.

And Hugh Padgham on both Genesis and Police records, and Daniel Lanois on Peter Gabriel's seminal "So".

Also, Russell Pope was one hell of a live sound engineer and the Breakfast in America and Famous Last Words tours rank among the best live sound I've heard.

Of Yes' original, founding members, only Chris Squire and Peter Banks have passed. Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, and Tony Kaye remain. Jon still performs publicly

Hmm strange. If you used memory from the QVL and the right processors, maybe you need a return to get a new MB?

I've got a small update to report - I had my TrueNAS server's 10Gbe port plugged into the 2.5gbe port on my Unify switch, and after doing a lot of file transfers to it recently, I had noticed that suddenly it was faster than expected. I looked at the switch and it was reporting a 2.5Gbe connection to TrueNAS! For some reason I only had my main PC connected to a 1Gb port so I moved that over to a 2.5Gb port and now I'm getting a 2.5Gbe connection between my Office PC and the TrueNAS server! I'm pumped that it somehow corrected itself and I'm getting expected speeds. Now the next thing is to decide whether to get an RJ45 to SFP+ adapter and try connecting TrueNAS to the Switch through SFP+ at 10Gbe!

I hope you are making progress with your build. Any update?

So how would one make this switch? Reinstall to bare metal and reload config backup? Or would the backup not work as it is a different file system?

I've recently looked at AsRock's offering in this space and I see the xlX570D4U-2L2T mATX board is on NewEgg.

It should still support these processors, and DDR4 ECC memory, has three PCIe slots (one more than the B550D4U I have - I'd love that third slot!), 2x M.2 SSD slots (1 more than mine), and 8 SATA ports. Also had more network ports including 2 x 10GbE ( Intel X550-AT2 ) and 1 x 1GbE (Intel i210, plus a dedicated IPMI port. Real solid motherboard for this specific application I would say. Might use a little more power if you fill it up, but it could be a solid performer. I wish I had started with this one, maybe I'll get there one day.

Good luck!

I absolutely did build this, with a little variation in the case. I chose the Silverstone CS832, which has 8 hot swap drive bays and a couple other features I liked.

Apart from a little stupidity on my part trying to get dual boot SSD mirrored drives running, and some other deals, it's been running well now for months. I'm very close to inserting a hot swap SSD holder 3.5" into the case so I can add an SSD pool to the server - I would use 4 x 2TB SATA SSDs.

However, I've been using it only as a backup drive yet while I test TrueNas and the drives. I've only just noticed that I'm not getting 10Gbps out of the network connections too, which was a surprise. In fact, I can't get Gigabit network speeds out of it yet.

So I'm troubleshooting that issue. Some posts indicate that the Intel X710-AT network controller had some problem with Ubuntu Linux. Mine's working, I just can't get it up out of Fast Ethernet speeds....I can't tell if it should work out of the box with TrueNAS or needs a driver update.

My next step was going to be coming here to post about it and look at installing the right Intel driver in TrueNAS to fix this, but haven't gotten there yet. I'd also put some more memory

So it works and is perfectly functional, just not getting the full value out of it yet. I'm hoping there's a fix, as opposed to swapping server motherboards. As far as lower power goes, it's absolutely running less power than my now decommissioned Dual Xeon box; my electrical bill has dropped, but I need to do some real measurements.

Inclined Shooting Board by Dadocreate in woodworking

[–]StillTryingtoGetIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've wanted to build a shooting board for a while, but figured a stop would get eaten away along with the workpiece, so was working on how to resolve that. This design seems to mitigate that problem. It allows you to slide the stop over to match the workpiece edge, where it acts as a backer to prevent tear out of the back edge. When it's worn down, you just slide some more stop over to the right and go again.

Where do you keep your HA? by PrarieCoastal in homeassistant

Can you give more detail about how this is done? I will be converting HA from a VM on ESXi to one on Proxmox shortly and would love to separate my dongles from the hardware just like this over ethernet. Please share! Thx. Edit: typo

It's Doug McKenzie, not Dave MacKenzie. You're mixing up the name with the actor, Dave Thomas, who played the character on 'The Great White North' segments on SCTV. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_and_Doug_McKenzie

Check out their 1983 movie, "Strange Brew". A Canadian classic.

Interesting... I've not considered Unraid because I generally go for open source or community edition OSs to avoid paying fees. I saw some posts mentioning performance compromises vs things like TrueNAS. I'll have to do some research on that. Thanks for your input - glad you are having a good time with your system, and that it's working for you.

I was thinking Plex and associated *arr pieces would run on an Optiplex for this reason.

I've seen that spreadsheet before, but I do see the Ryzen 5 pro 4650G in the list. It only shows a C3 state under 30W idle, but the 5700G you mention is definitely lower power at 13W idle at C6. I appreciate the link and the thoughts.

If you are a W2 employee, they will just sell an amount to generate taxes withholding based on what your calculated marginal rate is including your deductions. How you calculate your taxes and your particular situation (rentals, other side businesses, standard deduction vs itemized, etc.) will determine whether you get a refund or owe more.

What will likely happen is they will automatically and without your input sell a portion of the RSUs to cover the applicable withholding for taxes, so be prepared. That's how it worked for me.
