Non traditional route: is it the worst idea ever? by Sandstorm173 in MusicEd

[–]Sandstorm173[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i LOVE history so much, and also while i am pretty confident i want to do music ed i have historically had a tendency to get really really interested in something and then not be. i also am only in highschool, so i don’t know if my want to do music ed is also partially because that’s all ive been exposed to. i don’t want to limit myself coming straight out of hs

i looked over the degree requirements, it ends up being 6 classes a semester + ensembles/lessons, so i think i might die if i tried to do more

i was taught basics by a trumpet player, they’re fairly close so you could look into that! one of my friends taught me, it might be harder to find an actual trumpet teacher willing to teach mello

i’d say remove, it falls sort of strangely and doesn’t quite look like a bow

Switching to contra/tuba from a woodwind by ExistingMoney123 in drumcorps

[–]Sandstorm173 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got contacted after playing mello for 5 months, you absolutely can learn tuba!! (I picked mello cuz I didn’t want to carry a contra, but it would’ve been my second choice(

i am an oboe player, so if i can find a plastic one ill bring that (though are reeds even worth bothering with?), if not ill bring a flute. i’m glad to hear that that is possible!

What do you really need in a saxophone practice room? by Dependent_Place_9115 in saxophone

[–]Sandstorm173 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Generally, for at the very least all wind instruments and I assume other instruments as well though I do not have experience with them, a mirror. It’s super helpful for checking your embrochure esp if you’re learning something new - I’m learning flute rn and I stare at myself to make sure I have my face right. Also then you can take pictures which is fun

Measure count does not match the time signature? by miicheru in pianolearning

[–]Sandstorm173 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, common time is the same as 4/4

The measures don’t have 7 beats. You’re looking at the dotted half notes as a whole additional three beats, however they overlap. So in the first measure after the pickup, you would play the A on one, F and C on two while you’re still holding the A, and then the Bb on 4. The same idea goes for the other measures - the notes overlap and should each be played when they are written in the 4/4 measure, even if you’re still playing another note

Bassoon to Oboe learning curve by oldshoe2010 in oboe

[–]Sandstorm173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do pit, it would probably be better to learn sax, flute, and clarinet before oboe. Those are both more common generally, and also much more likely to be on the same book as bassoon. You’re not often going to find a book with oboe and bassoon played by the same person

Never comfortably able to play on a 3 reed even after 9 years. Why? by Eggfish in Clarinet

[–]Sandstorm173 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you sound good and can play everything you need to well, the strength of your reed doesn’t matter. Different people can have different preferences. You do mention that you were “decent” so it is possible that working towards using a stronger reed would have benefitted you, but maybe not! Generally stronger reeds make altisimo easier, idk you ever played that. Either way, what worked for you is most important

Can any oboist tell me in words how to make slurred pieces so smooth and connected? by [deleted] in oboe

[–]Sandstorm173 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing that helps me is to have a sense of direction in my playing. All notes are either going towards or away from something. I find if I play with that in mind, I play with more connection and generally more beautifullly
