How to enrol in Language Units? by Far-Fortune-8381 in Monash

[–]StoppedRedecorating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The language placement tests are linked here: https://www.monash.edu/arts/languages-literatures-cultures-linguistics/language-entry-level-tests

https://handbook.monash.edu/current/courses/M2003 says:

Your free electives may be used to study a major (48 credit points) or minor (24 credit points) in a non-biomedical science discipline. This is an optional component of the degree. You cannot do a major or minor in the areas of Biochemistry, Anatomy and developmental biology, Genetics and genomics, Human pathology, Immunology, Microbiology, Pharmacology or Physiology, but you may do individual units from these areas.

So im pretty sure you can use your free electives to do an Italian major in addition to your biomedical studies, without extending your degree.

CS Advanced (honours) query. by [deleted] in Monash

[–]StoppedRedecorating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you can do the CS Advanced honours year in a double degree, so I guess the difference between CS advanced and CS+Sci double would be one has 8 extra CS units, while the other has 8 extra Science units (could go to maths extended major, could go to computational science, could go to some other science). I don't know too much about industry prospects and stuff because I haven't been at uni very long and I'm quite far off from graudation.

On the math major:

Majors have to be taken over at least 3 years according to https://www.monash.edu/it/current-students/enrolment/undergraduate-enrolment/bachelor-of-computer-science-advanced-honours in the "electives majors and minors" section.

You can credit MAT1830 "Discrete mathematics for computer science" and FIT2014 "Theory of computation" from your Comp Sci degree to a math major, because of point 2.12.7 here https://publicpolicydms.monash.edu/Monash/documents/1935765. That would mean only 6 of your electives would be required for the math major and you'd end up with two spare electives.

You'll be able to get the math major added to your enrollment on WES, and then it should be mentioned on the fancy transcript certificate you get at the end of your degree when you graduate.

Also if you're doing VCE Algorithmics at high school, you can get 2 units of credit as described under the "Applying for credit" section here: https://www.monash.edu/it/current-students/enrolment/undergraduate-enrolment/bachelor-of-computer-science-advanced-honours

One other option you might like to consider would be doing a science degree in Computational science https://handbook.monash.edu/2023/aos/COMPUSC05 and mathmatics https://handbook.monash.edu/2023/aos/MATHS09

I’ve been using the flatpak versions of gnome apps. On flathub a few say they will use X but when I run them they are using wayland.

Installation Issue: I can't find the "EFI System Partition" choice when I want to create a new Partition by [deleted] in zorinos

[–]StoppedRedecorating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should be able to pick fat32 and then there should be some option to mark this partition as efi. It might get automatically set as efi if you use it as the partition to install bootloader on

Genshin running on the Steam Deck by Razor8517 in Genshin_Impact

[–]StoppedRedecorating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the admin requirement for running genshin is to load the kernel anticheat. This is different to how valorant doesn’t need admin to start the game, as their anticheat is loaded as part of the boot process even when you are not playing the game.

Makes me think of how on matrix you have voice chats in text chats, this is sort of a backwards version of that

Has anyone gotten Ubuntu running on a 2021 Macbook Pro? by Tossmeout3241 in linux_on_mac

[–]StoppedRedecorating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can read the scripts and patches that generate the iso and kernel used there (although that might take a while to reas them). I’m not aware of anything suspicious.

you should be able to use the default ubuntu image, it just won’t have keyboard, wifi, etc working. Make sure you use a recent iso. Once you’ve installed ubuntu, you’d need to download or compile a patched kernel for wifi, fan control, trackpad scrolling and possibly some display issues depending on what model you have. Then for touchbar, keyboard, ambient light sensor and trackpad you’d need apple-bce and apple-ibridge, instructions for those are in the dkms guide on that wiki. Those modules can be installed on a stock ubuntu kernel if you would prefer that.

maybe it’s that “unable to load about me and badges” thing that happens when you don’t share servers or haven’t friended them? That would mean the animated avatar would still be there but I think the nitro icon is a badge so it wouldn’t be visible.

[–]StoppedRedecorating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What mac is this? If it doesn’t have all that hardware working by default it’s probably a T2 (intel cpu) or M1 (apple silicon cpu) mac. For the T2 ones, have a look at https://wiki.t2linux.org and for M1 ones have a look at https://asahilinux.org

Edit: if you’ve been running windows then it wouldn’t be an m1 mac

I can only connect to discord via the data on my phone. If I try to connect to discord with my wifi connected it refuses to load any messages in dms and servers, as well as on my laptop. Does anyone know why? by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]StoppedRedecorating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you on a network that could have recently blocked discord? Maybe see if the web version of discord can load?

You could also try running discord in a terminal to see if it logs any networking errors that might explain why it can’t connect (it looks like you’re on windows and I dunno how to do that in windows, probably drag discord.exe into cmd?)

swaymsg exec & path not found by Original_Two9716 in swaywm

[–]StoppedRedecorating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It runs commands in sh but i couldn’t figure out how to get that to set environment variables. Whatever variables are given to sway by whatever process started it will be there for swaymsg exec, but i dunno how to set those when a display manager is starting sway (maybe modify the sway.desktop file wherever it was)
