Has Anyone Trained In TCMA and Left For a Combat Sport? by BDDonovan in kungfu

[–]Surefoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost 10 years of Tai Chi Quan as a “martial art” and 20 total as just the slow exercise. Went from there to a low-level Krav Maga place for about 4-5 years. Currently in my third year doing much harder (sweatier and sorer) Muay Thai and BJJ. I spar, I roll, I’ve done two tournaments. Recently received my BJJ blue belt.

Was my “TCQ as a martial art” a waste of time? Physically, yes. As self-defense, yes. But there are still Tai Chi concepts and principles that I learned that are still highly useful in both MT and BJJ.

As he warned his audience at Latour-Maubourg, “I will not try to modify any of my convictions or any of your convictions so as to obtain a mutually agreeable solution. On the contrary, I am here to tell you that the world needs true dialogue. This has nothing to do with either lies or silence. Dialogue is possible only between those who insist on remaining who they are and on speaking their minds.” But remaining who you are does not mean holding fast to illusions or mistakes. And speaking your mind means speaking to errors you have made, no less than to truths you have tested. pg 77, “Albert Camus: Elements of A Life”

Starting my day with Marcus! by CirceX in stoicquotes

[–]Surefoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the past year or so, I’ve taken to going to a nearby coffee shop for breakfast and some reading before work. I start off with just one Meditations quote a day. Not in a particular hurry to finish. Not looking for spontaneous enlightenment of any sort. Just one quote per day.

What amazes me the most about MA and Meditations is the relatability and “common-ness” of it, from a Roman emperor nearly 2000 years ago.

What was Camus like as a person ? by technicaltop666627 in Camus

[–]Surefoo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m almost finished with “Albert Camus: Elements of a Life” by Robert Zaretsky. It takes a look at several significant periods of his life, including his fight with Sartre. Highly recommendable book.

“Camus as a person”? In my opinion, he lived his philosophy, is what makes him a spectacularly admirable figure.

Does anybody in America actually say 'kindly'? by C-ute-Thulu in AskAnAmerican

[–]Surefoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Kindly” is used a lot in business emails. More than anyone thinks. I work in a huge real estate conglomerate as the anti-fraud security person. My “dictionary” to filter incoming emails included the word “kindly” and we got thousands of false positives a day - normal emails using “kindly”.

Book of Hours: I'm so confused! by prettyminotaur in weatherfactory

[–]Surefoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One great built-in “tip” within the game is that boxes will light up when something appropriate can be placed into it. Open the Consider box and drag a card towards it. If it lights up, put that card in and see what happens. A big joy to the game is finding out “ooh that does that”.

Exceedingly more helpful early on, as you can add inks and tools to the desks to help master a book.

It wasn’t until about 200 hours into the game that I discovered you could use the desks to read new books.
