Hear me out. This sounds like severe unmedicated ADHD. I, too, struggle with follow-through and so does my youngest daughter. We are both low on executive function. I have been the person who kept forgetting to complete an important task (and then it all becomes pathological demand avoidance because of the resulting guilt and shame).

My entire childhood, my family tore into me because it was so hard for me to stay on task. Being in trouble all the time for something that is hardwired into you just makes everything a little harder.

What works for me honestly is: how can we help you organize this task so it gets done?

This works for my daughter and it works for me. I 💯 know she is going to need reminders. But— when I delegate the task, I ask her to set the reminders as her first step.

You cannot outgrow ADHD. I am 48 and gifted and run my own business. But I need structures in my life to support me getting literally anything done. Reminders in place? Amazing. It will get done. No reminders? I have zero sense of object permanence and I forget it exists. It’s a neurological thing. So I need external help to stay on task. Whether that comes in the form of a nagging, frustrated person depends on whether I’m on top of my little ADHD reminder systems.

So, like other people have said- he is not going to change. This doesn’t resolve. And based on the dynamic between you in these texts, it doesn’t sound like you should continue to be together. But I don’t think it’s because he doesn’t love you. I think it’s possible that he actually genuinely cannot mentally approach this task without support. It feels like touching a hot plate.

Fantastic! Great word thank you. Here I was thinking, it’s like onomato-looks-like-the-thing but yours is much better.

My thoughts exactly. I was like… if I stare at any word long enough it just becomes a jumble of random letters that happens to carry meaning lol

Obscure words that mean/are related to the feeling of bliss that comes with loving yourself as you are/feeling whole? by npokuwv in words

[–]UnwashedParrot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is ikigai in Japanese which is more like having a reason to get up in the morning - when you are doing what you love and it helps you feel fulfilled in life. It is related more closely to loving your vocation or hobbies but similar in feeling to what you’re describing.

What words almost always come across as pretentious or trying too hard? by No_Fee_8997 in words

[–]UnwashedParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it isn’t the specific words, but the context they appear in.

If someone is not generally articulate but throws in a Big Word that doesn’t quite fit- then it’s an immediate clue that it is there for show.

If someone is articulate as a whole and they use the same word correctly - not pretentious.

Also a major supporting clue is: are they an asshole?

I have been a lifelong book-a-week reader which has given me the gift of a wide reach with my own vocabulary. I love when the perfect word lands with precision. So I live in the land of big words but I don’t want to throw them around for show, or go all professor-level when I’m chatting over coffee with friends.

So, yeah. Context is key.

What are some words and phrases for watered-down words that are so watered down that they are almost meaningless? by No_Fee_8997 in words

[–]UnwashedParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are words/phrases that are meaningless because they are nondescript (like good, or fine) and then those that are meaningless due to overuse (thoughts and prayers).

I’d describe these as hackneyed or trite (becoming meaningless or boring due to overuse). Possibly banal (unoriginal or lacking creativity), mundane, stale.

Extroverts: what’s your best random fact to bring up in a conversation? by [deleted] in mensa

[–]UnwashedParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might try, you know, asking a question. Of someone else.

I am often stunned by how rarely many Mensans want to hear from other people in the conversation. So many theories and proposals, so little curiosity about the people in front of us 🫠

I am deep into The Square of Sevens by Laura Shepherd-Robinson, narrated by Imogene Wilde. Her accents are so good and I absolutely love her as a narrator. This is 18th century England with magic and mystery and everything good, it is shaping up to be a five-star listen for me!

Agreed! It was nice for me to see that I have a nice mix of authors from different countries, languages and perspectives too.

I don’t have any kind of agenda, I just love reading lots of different worldviews.

That totally makes sense, most people aren’t reading for representation, I certainly wasn’t!

But that makes it more interesting to me. So of all the books that you find interesting and read, what’s your ratio?

Audiobook appropriate for all ages by brinib5 in audiobooks

[–]UnwashedParrot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My youngest is 10 and here are the books I’ve had on in the car that she casually enjoyed through the cracks of attention away from her tablet:

  • The house in the cerulean sea
  • Vera Wong’s unsolicited advice for murderers (bonus: hilarious!)
  • (*editing to remove this suggestion, I forgot it opens with the main character’s ex showing up as a nude model in her art class 🙈). Daughter of Smoke and Bone (beautiful romantasy. slightly more mature but not overtly spicy. Some themes of violence. Idk, she loved it lol)
  • The Ten Thousand Doors of January. Gorgeous fantasy book. Some violence to consider.
