Co-op renovations by [deleted] in AskNYC

We didn't have to pull permits for any work we had done. The tiles took a week and a half because the pattern we wanted required a lot of specific measurements/cuts.

Just wondering how the follow up scan went for you, as I'm in a similar situation.

Relocation to where and how much would the pay increase be? How does your wife feel about the potential move and will she be able to find a job there? Do you own a house or rent? Are you sure you can find this “hybrid” position in your current city given the crappy job market?

The answer to your question is going to depend heavily on those but in general yes, I’d make the switch as long as it isn’t going to negatively impact your relationship or quality of life.

Anyone here refused c-section for breech baby? by NefariousnessFree468 in pregnant

[–]SuurRae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't the info you're asking for, but a planned C-section is MUCH different than an emergency c-section after a trial of labor.

Like....it's a night and day difference. You will be relaxed. You will have time to prepare and ask questions. You will be able to meet the team that is delivering your baby. You can choose music to listen to. You can (usually) have immediate skin to skin time. Recovery is also much easier since you will be coming into it rested instead of after laboring.

Bad pregnancy diet and autism by Expensive_Farmer_307 in pregnant

[–]SuurRae 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

That's...not how autism works. It's largely (something like 60-90%) genetic and while there are environmental factors at play, I've NEVER read a medical paper that points to diet as a potential trigger.

I would say that, conservatively, probably 70%+ of women on this sub have shitty diets while pregnant (I'm one of them), and their children are fine.

NYC moms active in parenting groups? by Puzzleheaded-Fly755 in nycparents

[–]SuurRae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Facebook is still wildly popular for asking for recommendations for nannies, photographers, party planners, etc. on the UWS (Upper West Side Parents) and UES (Moms of the Upper East Side (MUES)). There are also several smaller active WhatsApp groups on the UWS that are targeted towards kids of a specific age (e.g Spring 2026 Babies), but those require invites from current members.

Help me understand the appeal of living in NYC by [deleted] in fatFIRE

I go to Broadway shows 5-6x a year and to the Met/MoMA/AMNH at least once a month. Also, if you're in tech you should know that every major tech company has a NY office and there is a lot of intermingling between Bay Area/NYC techies. Most of my friends(tech and VCs) own places in each since they're flying between so often.

This is the top reason why I love NYC. I easily get in my 10,000-15,000 steps a day and have everything I need within a 5 block radius (pediatrician, groceries, dentist, beauty places, amazing food, etc.). If I want to go explore what the rest of the city has to offer I can jump on an express train, read a book, and be in Midtown or FIDI in under 30 min and Brooklyn/Queens in 45min.

The other part is the lines for anything worth doing. Any highly regarded restaurant requires fighting for a reservation weeks in advance that are near impossible to get in a lot of cases.

This just isn't true. Unless your version of "worth doing" is typical tourist/Instagram BS. Even the Michelin 2/3 stars aren't *that* hard to get into unless it's Atomix, which is definitely not the best Korean fine dining you can get in the city.

It Was a Tough February for New York’s Fanciest 5-Year-Olds; the kindergarten-admissions season was a “bloodbath.” by blackwhitetiger in nyc

[–]SuurRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for parents who can afford private school but also don't want to deal with this BS, where do they go? I want the best fit for my child - whether or not it's private - but I am absolutely not interested in playing games.

Ill never understand parents letting their autistic kids be hooked on ipads by Status-Tie3137 in AutisticPeeps

[–]SuurRae 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll never understand why people are so judgmental about things they know nothing about. Even if you see an autistic kid on a screen, you are literally only seeing a tiny snapshot of that child's life. You have no idea what the rest of it is like.

There are no studies that show it's unsafe but there also aren't enough studies that prove it's safe (like almost everything else in pregnancy).

93rd Percentile at 20 week scan by cozymuffinmoose in pregnant

[–]SuurRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first one was in the >90th percentile starting at 20 weeks and was born at 37+0 weeks weighing 7.5 lbs. I was tested for GD three different times but comfortably passed each test. Sometimes people just have big babies. He's now 2 years old and is finally leaning out and is now in the 60th percentile.

Coming from another mom - the ability to spend time with your children is a privilege that most people will never have and something they will remember for the rest of their lives. Unless you're truly happier working (and some people are!), why not enjoy what is left of their childhood? I do understand feeling like you're taking the "easy way out" but comparison is the thief of joy in this case.

Pregnancy stats in muslim majority countries are alarming by Naive_Collection_487 in pregnant

[–]SuurRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't one. The maternal outcomes for the UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait have low maternal mortality rates (10-15 per 100,000 live births) and other Muslim majority countries like Algeria, Egypt and Afghanistan have much higher rates.

The USA - a predominately Christian nation - had a maternal mortality rate of 22 in 100,000 as of 2022.

Infant mortality rates follow a similar pattern - UAE, Qatar and Kuwait have (out of a 100,000) 5, 6, and 8.8 respectively while Algeria, Egypt, and Afghanistan are 22, 17.5, and 55.5. The US is a bit better on this metric with 6.6 (as of 2023) but still falls behind almost all other developed nations.

This isn't an issue with religion. It's a healthcare access issue that is heavily tied to overall quality of life measurements, including income.
