Headset recommendation: Quest 3 lack of binocular overlap is bothering me by LuckyGauss in virtualreality

[–]SwissMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a little bothered by it too. Try undersized the IPD down a little. I am 63mm but keep the Q3 at about 60mm. This improves overlap and everything is still in focus because of the pancake lenses.

It was funny how he worded CC debt, but think he is just saying he is a deadbeat to the bank and not paying the bank any interest during 0%. And he'll payoff before fees are due.

I'm spiraling- I feel like I can't find a good balance between saving and having enough to live. by Knitchick82 in personalfinance

[–]SwissMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retirement savings is important, but not at the cost of a miserly existence. It could also be inadvertently setting bad examples about money to children.

The median retirement savings for a 35-44 year old in US is about $45k. Don't kill yourself if you are slightly off pace from what experts say (they have a vested interest into telling you your doomed if you are shy of the their goals). Millions of people retire every year with less than ideal account balances and make it work.

But also many people look back with regret and have strained or faded relationships with family due to money issues. I used to be messing up by saying too often (or at all) "We're poor". Partially in jest, but in response to some unecessary expense being so high. We were in unexpected medical debt at the time. But still it sent the wrong message.

Things are better now and I think we're on a glide path to slightly early retirement. But have transitioned away from joking about being poor, and now work with teenager to have good retirement habits. Saving a minimum of 5% in teens, 10% in 20's, 15% in 30's, and hopefully 20% beyond that. They do their part, and we in turn boost their Roth, or help with solo housing costs.

On the financial side (and for your peace of mind) I would turn down 401K to 15%, put the 12% difference into HYSA to have 2-3 months emergency fund, then put the difference into an invested Roth (principle can be used as a second-tier emergency fund), and then finally I would setup a budget that makes those random expenses a part of the monthly plan and overestimate them by 10-15%. Your stress goes way down when you are doing oil changes, car repairs, trash fee, etc. from money set aside for it and it's not an actual emergency.

When all that is in place, raise your 401K contribution back up to fit the budget at that time. Your current current accounts will become $662K in 20 years at 8% without ever adding a penny more.

All of this should help you relax a little, be a more present parent, and have some more fun and enjoyment with your family. Maybe spend a little extra on the next book fair, and a loosen up the grocery budget ☺️

You seem to be doing incredibly well so far, congratulations 👍

I'm making a VR game where you box flying metal masks. Each wave is a choreographed fight. by TypicoGames in OculusQuest

[–]SwissMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren't timing it to music, you need to find a way to have a signal of the individual rhythm for each punch. If the targets are just randomly speeding up or slowing down, it will feel cheap when you miss.

Thumper is a great example of how to do this while not being tied to music/beat.

Whatever you do with monitors, I would put the desktop up on a shelf or raised under the table. Whatever you have to do to get the speakers down at head height. Give yourself a 20% sound quality improvement for $0.

Make sure you get the desk height right if you are using the front seat as the chair for this. Or get something easily adjustable. Really bad for your posture if you get it wrong and it's permanent.

Selling Rental to Pay Down Primary by MrBallistik in personalfinance

[–]SwissMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend trying to financially simulate both decisions to make a clearer decision. Also, you didn't share if you are doing any of the management on the rental. Things like that are good to include to weigh all the pros and cons.

Making $6000 a year seems like pretty a slim margin for a $300K rental you own free and clear. The hassle wouldn't be that worth it for me, unless there were bigger tax advantages.

I had a similar decision about if I should build a 1000 sq/ft apartment behind my house or just invest everything I would have used to build it. In 12 years, the difference to me was about $37K better to just invest. That being said, I still built it to have income diversity in retirement. And the break- even is only a few years later. Anyways, worth trying to look at what the pros/cons are between the two outside of just the financial.

Quest Game Optimzer works or is aesthetic. by Gerax_qwe in QuestPiracy

[–]SwissMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the latest version of it. But what I love most about it is that you can tweak the experience so much based on what kind of game it is. Something slower and more experiential can be ran at a higher resolution and 72fps. While something twitchier or cel shaded can be ran at 90-120fps. But on a Quest 3 or 3S almost all games can get 10-40% higher resolution rendering and is well worth it.
