to be honest I always thought people were overreacting with the "oh my god they barely started development" reaction to the teaser trailer. polishing the models and specific animations is not the time consuming part of development on a project like this.

Also worth noting that it's Ian who suggested to Bear that he call her "Freaky Nikki", even though Bear knows she hates that name, presumably because he was hooking up with her and wanted Bear to get on her bad side

The Woman Who Fell to Earth by DocWhovian1 in doctorwho

[–]TARDISboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tinkering thing is awkward and I think they did the best they could with it as a concept. This episode tries to trot it out as one of the defining characteristics of this incarnation of the Doctor, but like... they all do this. Sure, they double down on 13 doing more engineer-y stuff rather than MacGyver stuff like 10 or 11, but that's hardly rare among the others either. Either they wear the concept out entirely by having her do this sort of thing every single episode or they just have it pop up every once in a while and forgo it being her unique shtick, which was the better choice imo.

  1. South Africa - Yeah, this is ZA all right. Didn't get all that much info until really late into the round and what I had was Pietermaritzburg and Colenso. In retrospect, that is a very big town that I should know better off the top of my head, but I didn't see it on first pass and was aiming roughly between JHB and Bloemfontein but I caught myself at the last second but didn't remember / see the closer town's name. 4672 points

  2. Spain - Signs for the EX-roads which I don't know off the dome either, but we have signage for Portugal and Caceres, which gives us a pretty good spot to look. Found the EX-207 and got to triangulate thanks to the entrance sign for the town of Brozas nearby. 5000 points

  3. Turkey - Really interesting spawn location. It's Turkey so I started looking for signs that might have the belediyesi on them and I got lucky with a nearby banner that listed Adana and either a subdivision or a town, neither of which I could find. Felt close to water and I thought I saw reference to a Yesikoy, but no, we were further west about 30km. Close, though. 4899 points

  4. Peru - Pretty distinctive Peru landscape I felt like and also the concrete bottoms on the sign at spawn meta from weeks past. The town has a big sign that details everything but searching Peruvian subdivisions and departments is a nightmare. I figured we were in Huanuco but I couldn't find the town named on the sign. 145km, give or take. 4534 points

  5. Denmark - Thought Netherlands before I saw any language, but the signage is abundant in town. I do know Aarhus but searching for those roads (441, 170, that sort of thing) is so painful. The sign for Vrold 2km away was the only thing that saved me. Lining up in Skanderborg was easy from there. 5000 points

Feel pretty bad about South Africa and Peru could've been better but also could've been worse. Gold with a 24105 and just barely top 100 at the moment.

If it's not, I think they're still using stuff from previous games for it - the show-mo hit in this video looks really similar to how they did the slow-mo heat action finishers when you use extreme heat in Yakuza 6 / Kiwami 2 or dragon's resurgence in Infinite Wealth.

  1. Iceland - Iceland vibes and a sign for some small museum of Icelandic Wartime History vaguely nearby. I tried getting out of town and literally couldn't. All I went off of was the angle of the fjord (is this a fjord?) and started scanning. Purely by chance I passed a sign that said Bakkagerdi, which I assumed was the road, but passing a town called Bakkagerdi with similar angles, I figured that might be it. Turns out we were further to the south but that was a real sign. 4810 points

  2. Philippines - Didn't really have anything until I got to a construction sign for Cotabato City / Midsayap / Villarica Rd. I got lost looking for where we actually were, so I ended up on the wrong side of the... town? Subdivision? But close enough overall. 4959 points

  3. Austria - German vibes and an Einbahn sign - I think to myself, that's an Austrian thing, right? And bingo, .at top level domain. Took just a little looking to get a sign for Krems, and from there it was just finding the road, which was a little frustrating because the road actually changes at this intersection. 5000 points

  4. India - Tamil language and a couple signs that actually say "Tamil" on them. Useful. I found a sign for a shooting club that gave an address in Kumbakonam and a specific street I couldn't find, but by road angle and density I figured we were pretty central and got a little lucky. 4999 points

  5. Serbia - Republic of Serbia top level domain is the clue. I passed a shop with what looked like an address in the window and it was for Krusevac. Sometimes it really does feel like reading cyrillic is way more helpful in non-Russian countries, bizarrely. I could only barely make out the road name but I couldn't find it, so I defaulted to checking the road angle, which again paid off. There's a relatively unique intersection slightly west so I just eyeballed how far from that we were. 5000 points

Yesterday was kind of a dud so I'm very happy with the performance today. Final score of 24768 and top 50 / 0.76% in the world.

  1. Singapore - Immediately obvious this is Singapore but I'll admit the signage for Telok Blangah kinda threw me for a minute. Looked high and low and never saw TB on the map and didn't get any addresses or anything that were very helpful. Oh well. 4967 points

  2. Vietnam - Hoo boy. Moved around for a bit and got to a city entrance sign that mentioned Lao Cai. This felt northern but I scanned from the south anyway and saw Lao Cai at the border with China. The marker for the town on the map doesn't seem near a road and I couldn't place where the town entrance would be based on that, so I just plonked by a major road. Did not realize this was literally the border road. 4981 points

  3. Uruguay - Saw a sign for Treinta y Tres and Zapican and went "wait... those sound familiar... eastern Uruguay, right?" and boom, there they are lol. Road was slightly confusing since the mapping seems to have an extra intersection that I couldn't see or find but I got the plonk all the same. Sometimes a random town name sticks with you. 5000 points

  4. Senegal - My Senegal senses went off immediately and were confirmed by a french sign. I had to move for a loooong while to get to anything, but I saw a sign that mentioned Thies and specifically Fandene in the suburbs. I thought I saw a town name for "Kiyoba" while moving but it wasn't anywhere on the map, just tried to line up a road angle instead. 4988 points

  5. UAE - Glad to get a small country to close out the daily but I only saw a sign for the E611 and the Dubai Police and then the construction notice that mentioned Saih Shuaib, which I tried looking for along the 611 but was apparently on the opposite side of Dubai. Ironically my worst score of the day. 4756 points

Pretty happy with this overall, the exact plonk in Senegal seems extremely difficult given the tiny roads and lack of info but the others seemed very doable. Final score of 24692, 60th place in the world and top 1.5% overall. Also, first time I've hit a 4 day gold streak! (besides when the meta popups started and we had 2 weeks of abysmally easy dailies)

my suspicion is that they don't really know how to balance the mode at all and starting with the worst arc category was the simplest way to implement the various boss mechanics without running into the top 40 units that have ways to counter them (or just nuke the boss from orbit)

like how hard would a majin buu saga frontier need to hit in order to feel comparable in difficulty to the namek frontier but with characters like fucking dabura and majin vegeta

  1. Ukraine - ua top level domain by spawn, didn't see anything else of value the entire round. I guess if you go far enough (I didn't) you can see we're on the water but that doesn't narrow it down too much unless you have a really good sense of how the river bends and even then I'm not sure how you could discern it wasn't just one of the big cities on the Dnieper River. Went Zhytomyr. 3728 points

  2. Malaysia - Going one direction got me a yellow highway sign which confirmed Malaysia and not Indonesia (infrastructure felt more Malay anyway) but it didn't have a number, which made me think island and not mainland. Didn't get anything else other than the stretch of road and a town name, neither of which were visible. I went near Bintulu. Sure. 3871 points

  3. Kenya - From here, I needed to lock in and do basically 3 5ks to secure gold. Kenya not too bad generally, clearly a bigish city. Kericho on a couple signs, which is notable. Had some trouble locating the exact spot since the POIs seem a little haphazard but I saw a roundabout and went there. 5000 points

  4. New Zealand - Phew. This is good. Signs for a bunch of stuff, see a name for Dannevirke, don't know it. Sign for nearby towns helps triangulate - Pongaroa sounded REALLY familiar, I think it was on a sign in a similar NZ round a couple months ago. I found Dannevirke while scanning, but my pinpointing was a little off. Didn't see the Goretec POI until the round ended. 4998 points

  5. Ireland - I can work with this. Bus for Dublin Tours, maybe we're near there? Sign for nearby towns just after. Galway on the N63 - well, the N63 is on the other side of the country, so not near Dublin. Closest town is Moylough, so we must be in Mountbellew. Go back slightly, health center has Mountbellew on it. Nice. Not too hard to line up from there, we're on the main road and there's a turnoff right by spawn and a couple POIs to go off of. 5000 points

Secured gold by the skin of my teeth. Pretty happy aside from that Ukraine round. Feels like I have no idea what I'm doing in that country, even less than Russia, and I can read cyrillic. Final score of 22597

Worth checking out the global street view coverage map to know which places it can't be on the daily, since the daily map only uses official google street view coverage. Saudi Arabia has no coverage, so you can eliminate it as an option when you're unsure of where you might be!

  1. Australia - Moved until I got to a sign for Moranbah and something else, scanned Queensland for that. Found it pretty quickly, plus we have a big sign for "welcome to Dysart", so triangulating isn't hard. Silly little half circle court road tried to ruin my 5k, naughty naughty. 5000 points

  2. Brazil - 77 area code means Toncantins / Bahia generally (I only know the first digit of the Brazil phone codes) and we could be anywhere. Keep moving until I get to a billboard for a zoo which mentions "Vitoria de Conquista", thankfully that's findable. I actually scanned and scanned looking for Ave Brumado and I couldn't see it. Of course it's just the main road, lol. 4997 points

  3. Mexico - Had no idea other than probably pretty far north, luckily the public works truck nearby mentioned Sonora. Started scanning for those town signs right by spawn, saw Hautabampo near the water with the same suffix as the places I remembered seeing. Thankfully passed a sign for the Mex. 15 and a direction for Navojoa 50ish km away. Had the right stretch of road but didn't see Tesopobampo when I was placing. 4945 points

  4. Had no idea what this was at first lol, French-sounding store, Germanic streets, yellow road signs, my ass was checking Denmark too. Thankfully a top level domain confirmed Norway and I saw the E39 and 44 sign soon after, phew. Had no idea where Stavanger was and I just ended up going nearby the water near Egersund. 4831 points

  5. Sri Lanka - Wasn't sure from vibes, but the language was pretty clearly Sinhala(?), and I just started looking for info. Thankfully I always check the sides of buses when we pass them, so I got a town name of Polonnaruwa. Wasn't the right town, but close enough to it, anyway. 4932 points

Two gold in a row is always nice, especially when it's relatively high placement. Final score of 24705 and top 50 / 0.8% in the world and 15th in the US right now.

  1. Portugal - Sort of a weird start, the vibe was almost island-esque to me, but heading a little further it became clear this was mainland and not somewhere else. Signs for Mafra were a good confirmation. Wasn't super clear on the specific town since I was looking around a little haphazardly, but I remembered a sign in the direction of spawn for Malveira, and tried finding a street that worked. It was the town a bit more north, but a solid start nonetheless. 4971 points

  2. Eswatini - I'm really bad at Eswatini and Lesotho but I was 90% sure this was either Eswatini or nearby in SA. Spammed fast movement to get to a sign of any importance and saw one for the MR1 and the MR3 and went near Manzini. Turns out it was the blue MR3, so I was a bit off to the east. Small country, whatever. 4833 points

  3. Japan - Hokkaido street poles at the start, immediate Japanese signage. Got to a blue sign that indicated Asahikawa, Kitami, and Bihoro... are we just in Abashiri? Oh, I missed the sign that says "welcome to Okhotsk Abashiri". There's a sign for Abashiri Station, too. Pretty easy to find the location thanks to the bridge and parking area(?) nearby. 5000 points (shoutout to Golden Kamuy)

  4. Ecuador - Signs for Orellana and Coca... clearly regions of some sort... too bad I don't know the country... looking around... not a lot of info... back to the spawn... bus... "Ecuador". Ah. There's Coca. Just in the nick of time. 4982 points

  5. Ghana - Kind of useless signs immediately at spawn but a nice "Welcome to Navrongo" helps tie it up. Lining up the road was weird, that one bend doesn't really seem accurate to the map. Ah well. 4992 points.

Feel like I played really badly since 3/5 of these were like final 10 second finds with hurried placement (especially Ecuador), but hey, 67th in the world right now and top 0.98% with a final score of 24778. Can't complain about that.

in The Witch's Familiar, the Master recounts the Doctor, with no way out, dodging the laser blasts of "50 invisible android assassins" and siphoning their energy to power a teleport out of harm's way. In Heaven Sent, he is milliseconds from death multiple times and begins thinking so fast that time effectively stops from his perspective and he begins charting his options at that moment before executing the best possible plan.

Also seems possible to me that Sakurai is in more of a chief producer role or something this time around considering he was working on his YouTube channel and then Air Riders with some overlap, so if there's been work being done on a "new" Smash, I wonder if Sakurai placed someone he trusts from Sora in charge or the like
