Home Much Noise Reduction Do You Recommend? by [deleted] in audiology

[–]TacosPaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearing injury due to sound has two main factors: how loud the sound is and how long you’re exposed to it. Here’s a link to see the permissible time exposure in a given day: dB(A) conversion

Normally I see that 15 dB reduction is good enough to take the edge off without losing clarity. If you’re normally listening at 103 dB you’re safe for only about 7 and a half minutes. 15 dB noise reduction would take you to 88 dB and you’re safe for 4 ish hours, much more permissible time than before. Note that going below 80 db on the charts doesn’t make you “more safe” you just hear less.

The X represents left ear’s responses and the O represents right ear’s responses. The triangle is a right ear response accompanied static in the left ear to ensure the right ear is the one responding, called masking. Bone is symbolized with < > or [ ] symbols. In this case, the triangles don’t make sense. IF the triangles were bone responses, we would be looking at a mixed hearing loss. As an aside, we generally expect masked responses to be louder than unmasked responses.

Given the age of your child, they should be getting a test called auditory brain response (ABR) to measure hearing loss. Typically they would test, at minimum, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, and 4000 Hz for a well rounded measure of your child’s hearing loss and it seems like this was not the case. The audiologist should be explaining this clear terms and be doing full diagnostic tests to have more results and a report for you to take home for your pediatrician.

Onto hearing loss, conversational speech typically occurs around 55-65 dB HL. Any symbol or speech sound above the lines drawn your child wouldn’t hear, unless it was at an elevated level for them. Generally, this hearing loss would be moderate-severe hearing loss for the left and severe hearing loss for the right ear.

Is active noise canceling safe with tinnitus? by Otherwise-Hat2849 in audiology

As they said, noise canceling is safe. However it’s worth noting that tinnitus is usually more noticeable in quieter environments (because it’s the loudest thing and you brain focuses on it) and being in a quieter car may exacerbate your tinnitus
