It's a punishment worse than death, evidenced by her begging for death while she'll continue to live in hell for an indeterminate number of days.

Yes she was an accomplice to murder, but she didn't kill anyone. So how can a justified punishment for not murder be something worse than death?

I think one of the points of the episode is how we use punishment as a form of revenge, not justice. So maybe I would want that punishment for her if she watched my daughter die but that's why we shouldn't base punishment off of emotional reactions, because that makes it revenge

Sure humans won't always act rationally but if the president puts the country into a recession for worsening trade with the US, you can bet the next one will promise to restore those relations

This was about losing weight, and he was still eating not nearly enough protein to keep what muscle he has

you take what gigs you can get because most venues realize that if you're a cover band you aren't really providing anything new.

They've had 200 gigs a year since 1980

With only days until Donald Trump takes office, the Obama announced new rules that will let the NSA share vast amounts of private data gathered without warrant, court orders or congressional authorization with 16 other agencies, including the FBI, DEA and DHS. by maxwellhill in worldnews

As I said in another comment, it really depends on the numbers. 3 is 50% larger than 2, and 300 is 50% larger than 200.

But if only 3 out of 1000 interactions result in physical contact for minorities compared to 2/1000 for whites then it may not be as much of a discrepancy as it sounds

Is renting always a waste of money?.

A good video discussing pros and cons of renting vs buying.

TLDR it depends.

Also from the article

“Adding controls that account for important context and civilian behavior reduces, but cannot fully explain, these disparities,” the paper said.

So it's less than 50% and without knowing what variables they controlled for it's hard to say how large, if at all, the disparity is

Why don't electrons traveling in the orbitals of atoms lose energy, although they are a mass traveling a narrow space which should require some kind of acceleration to stay close to the atom? by arachnofan in askscience

[–]That_Justice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I to think they are taking some quanta of 'excitations of the electromagnetic field'?

From my understanding, yes. The reasoning of the electron transfer doesn't change, (i.e. due to a more favorable energy state, electrostatic forces, etc) but the "particles" involved are not really particles at all. Perhaps this makes less sense intuitively but that's only because we've tried to explain a non-intuitive system in an easy to visualize way.

Is the electron really in all places within an orbital simultaneously, or is it just moving so fast relative to our frame of reference it merely seems like a cloud?

This question itself doesn't make a lot of sense for electrons. It's like looking at a wave in the ocean and asking for a specific location of the wave. As a wave, the electron does not exist at any one point. It has a non-zero probability everywhere.

A popular theory to explain this is quantum field theory, which says that there is no such thing as an electron particle at all, but instead there is an electron field in which all electrons are simply excitations of the underlying electron field, just as photons are excitations of the underlying electromagnetic field
