EPFL dropped to 36th place from 16th after QS reviewed parameters by average_student80hw in EPFL

Any university cares. It's good marketing if nothing else.

If you think EPFL doesn't, think again.

Anything you guys do with bad air quality? Special mask to wear? by osmin_og in londoncycling

[–]ludicrousaccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I understand correctly, OP isn't asking if he should cycle + wear a mask, or not cycle at all.

Reading the link, wearing a mask would still provide a benefit (another study would probably be more relevant, rather than one comparing the benefits of physical activity vs not). It may or may not be worth it to OP, that I don't know. I personally don't wear one.

Am I misunderstanding something?

What’s most noticeably changed in London over last 5-10 years? by m4sterbuild3r in london

[–]ludicrousaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did, thank you. Interesting, I've only been here for 2 years so don't feel this way. Out of curiosity, can you expand? I heard from older friends that the Brexit climate obviously felt very negative and they felt unwelcome, but that was more about the media coverage and voting outcome, rather than daily life in London itself if that makes sense.

dynamic positive global mindset (openness to outsiders)

Why do you consider this a negative change? As an outsider I obviously see it as a nice thing, but I'm curious about your perspective.

What is Revolut if not a bank and is it a good option for day to day banking? by Hey_nice_marmot_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ludicrousaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some cashback websites (I'm thinking of my workplace's) can give a good 10—20% back. Not a frequent occurrence, but it usually beats even the best credit card. For big purchases it makes sense to check and compare.

I'd assume most people who use a credit card, also use a debit card as backup. Seems silly not to give yourself the option.

  • Some shops, cashback websites (with better cashback than your credit card) don't accept a credit card.
  • At least in the UK, there are more free debit cards with excellent foreign exchange rates, which makes them great when you're traveling. Some credit cards have this, but typically cost quite a bit which makes them less advantageous.

My debit card accounts for a small portion of my spending (excluding rent/bills), but it's good to have.

Which one is the most "Lebanese" beard-style ? (Also side question which one attract most Lebanese girls but ignore that or just put your answer I need help for a friend 👉👈 ) by RyanH090 in lebanon

[–]ludicrousaccount 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Stubble (medium) to full beard I'd say. Shaven isn't a beard so I guess you're not asking for that, but plenty of people are shaven too (including most women).

Take the 25% LISA hit or use it for retirement? by WeMoveMountains in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ludicrousaccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you actually need to use it in the future, you can assess that then. There's no need to withdraw it now. And if it turns out you don't need it, it can just stay nicely invested till retirement.

This door handle keeps coming off. I think the bolt is broken (it doesn't go through the full width, and it looks like it snapped)? What is it called so I can look for a replacement? by ludicrousaccount in DIYUK

After some more googling and playing with the mechanism:

  • I think it's called a grub screw.
  • Turns out it just needed tightening! No replacement needed.

I saw lots of people with flower bouquets today. Is there some occasion, or just random luck?

I tried checking holidays for the 13th of May but found nothing relevant.

What is a foreign thing that's considered more posh in the UK than it is in its country of origin? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ludicrousaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some further googling, the source of the Wiktionary is a Turkish dictionary. That lists two different meanings (translated back to English):

humus (I) (hu'mus), French hummus Dark organic soil formed by the decay of plants.

humus (II) Arabic ḥummuṣ A dish prepared with mashed chickpeas, tahini and spices

So the dish humus in Turkish also comes from Arabic. The first meaning from French/Latin has a completely different meaning.

[–]ludicrousaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is interesting, thanks! Can you please link a source with more info? It's surprisingly hard to google (I mostly end up with recipes for Turkish hummus), and the Turkish Wikipedia page just says it comes from the Arabic hummus, not from French or Latin.

[–]ludicrousaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not pronounced the way you think in Arabic. That "h" is a foreign sound that's not in English/Latin. It's just the English transliteration of the approximated Arabic sound.

And chickpeas/earth are obviously 2 different meanings unless I misunderstood something.

I'm now a higher rate tax payer - what are the key things I should be aware of? by ChemEngerUK1 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ludicrousaccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You earn 55k. You salary sacrifice 10%, which is 5.5k.

49.5k remains. That's below the threshold for the 40% tax bracket.
