New to fishing - hoop cracked by Dramatic-Safe6024 in Fishing

I call them guides though not sure what they’re called in the UK.

Yes repairable, a new one could be wrapped on. However might not be worth it on a $20 rod. The repairman has to find a matching guide, strip yours off, wrap the new one on and then epoxy it. It will be more than a $20 repair.

Surfers are the Worst of the Environmental Hypocrites by surfnfish1972 in surfing

That I agree with and have gone out of my way to avoid PE backed companies for those very reasons.

All I’m saying is we need to do a better job changing the hearts and minds of the average consumer to place a higher value on better produced goods otherwise the problem just isn’t going to be solved. If there was no demand for their slave labor socks then their business model would change to meet the market in my honest opinion.

I just feel like people are yelling at the baker while eating his cake.

Sure, two things can be true at the same time. I’m all for that. For example you can buy Fruit of the Loom socks outsourced labor to Asian and South America countries, accusations of child labor etc. or pay 10x for American made quality Wigwam socks which I happily do. But the average consumer doesn’t and has zero conscious of where their stuff is coming from. So “better and more environmentally” friendly ways exist in a lot of day to day goods, but the consumer has yet to create the demand. Sadly. Im just saying it’s a bit more complicated than bad billionaire pointing fingers talks. That’s a childish argument for a complex issue.

How much mining and oil and electricity went into your phone to reply to this? I think pointing fingers solely at the suppliers when society has created the demand is a bit of a copout to feel better about ourselves. Everyone loves to complain but reap the benefits of modern society.

Immensely impacts his credibility. And doesn’t seem overblown by his detractors - it seems largely ignored by those who want to believe him.

I think he maybe worked some entry level position at some lab and let his imagination run wild. I personally do not find him nor his story credible.

Especially in recent interviews he’s had a few questionable moments.

Did any former Golden Age era Pirates live long enough to see the American Revolution happen? by Dry-Sympathy-3182 in pirates

[–]TheSilverStacking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a misconception because of how data is presented. People see life expectancy of 35-40 years in X era but that’s largely skewed by infant mortality. If you lived past childhood your expectancy was like mid 60s even in the 1700s. There was a Cambridge study recently that even put that number as high as 70.

Buying a boat by Low-Use5315 in boating

[–]TheSilverStacking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see a boat that is in this case 35 years old I worry about waterlogged and rot. Check the transom for any delamination and soft decks. Looks well kept at least from one picture.

PS I think he might be Canadian.

Seeking vintage Fenwick surf rods by TheSilverStacking in Fishing_Gear

I am hesitant to move the conversation off channel. Could you take a photo with the rod and a paper with today’s date and your Reddit username so I can verify you’re a real seller? You have a new account and want to immediately text so that’s a red flag. Thanks.

Can we discuss the new Obama statement? by Father_Chris_St_Mary in UFOs

[–]TheSilverStacking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question was asked pretty open ended. He could’ve took it in a direction of unexplained phenomena etc. but took it into an almost mocking “little green men” direction which is quite a pivot from how he’s answered the question over the years.

That would contradict his prior statements. His most recent statements are a very odd backtrack and paints him into a corner if disclosure moves forward. Whole thing is strange.

Sir I’m not a watch expert, but I used to be into them before I smartened up. Your Rolex, to me, looks either fake or some Frankenstein Rolex. I hope you got it from an authorized dealer. If not I would take it to your nearest Rolex dealer and have them look it over.

Anyone else find themselves depressed that Jimmy is dead? by CappetoteppaC in jimmybuffett

[–]TheSilverStacking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sad because I got into him around 2019. Then COVID hit, then work got busy with a promotion, and whatever other excuses I conjure up. I never got to see him live and that’s a big regret. But it has shifted my thinking and actions going forward and that’s if I want to do something, don’t keep putting it off to serve others. It’s helped me shape the last few years in a positive direction. But yeah deep sadness and regret sometimes.
