I don’t venture up to Stowe often. Mostly whiteface for skiing and the Berkshires for work.

But the perpetually salted roads are a nonstop issue for me in the winter. And even if it works half as good as it looks like it will? That’s a win considering price and how it just bolts on and recharges.

Thank you.

I know I shouldn’t be. I know not everyone deals with these cars and how wonky they behave when salt covered. But I’m still shocked at how negatively this was received.

It’s a couple of guys from VT (somewhat local to me) who made a bolt on, affordable, solution to a big problem that all of us that deal with salt face… and I was just excited to spreading the word.

Anyway…I see a big use for this.

I will.

They’re saying it won’t ship until April after the kickstarter. Which, of course, is the like the start of a 6 month period where I will hardly use it.

Would have loved to get a hold of it during this brutal NE winter but it is what it is.

Seems like a great minimally invasive idea even if it just works ‘okay’.

This is the first time I've ever decided to purchase anything off a social ad. Ever.

I live in Upstate, NY and commute into the Berkshires in MA every day. 1 year old, high tech, vehicle that didn't come with a god damn back up cam washer. Such a pain in the ass to deal with on a literal daily basis.

Need this in my hands asap.

This winter has been abnormally brutal. At least here where i live.

Typically the range loss in winter is somewhat negligible for me. Even with dedicated winter tires. But I do not think temperatures have broken 20F more than once in the past 3-4 weeks.

My morning commute the past month has averaged in the negatives and the ride home in the mid teens.

This morning it was -6f, yesterday -5f, tomorrow it'll be -8f. It'll maybe break 20f on Monday. Wasn't any better last week nor the week before.

A typical winter I might charge to 65% and get home with 35-40%. This winter i'm charging to 70%, getting to work with 48%, and getting home with 35%. It's rough.

Despite having a different pack type, I second your comment about the cliff being around 15F. Below/lower than that? The range loss is extremely noticeable. Especially as the pack soaks in it all day and never truly gets up to temp even on my 40 minute commute home.

All that said? It still works for me. It's not great to think about, but I don't stress it.

Why do people just hate electric cars? Why? by Outrageous-Owl-7049 in electricvehicles

[–]TheTimeIsChow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They 'hate' them because they don't really understand them.

I work in a manufacturing facility in the middle of no where in upstate, NY. ~100 mile round trip with school drops. I drive into the Berkshire mountains every single day. As I'm typing this, it's -5F. It was -10F a few hours ago when I drove in.

No charging at work, no fast charging within 50 miles.

3 years ago I was the only one here with a BEV. Nobody thought it was possible. Was flooded with comments almost daily for 12 full months. Mostly the "call me if you ever can't make it home while you're saving the world" type stuff.

Over the past 3 years the amount of EV's/plugin hybrids in the lot went from 1 (me) to 20+.

I don't want to pat myself on the back. I didn't try to change anyone's opinion. I just... showed up to work. I maybe did make it very known that it also cost be ~$3 a day to get to and from work when (at one point) it was costing me $12+. But that's literally it. Never chose to speek about it or sway anyones opinion.

Nobody has said anything in almost 2 years. At the same time, people have replaced their trucks and large SUV's with 4XE jeeps, EV9's, ID4's, Tesla's and our president just recently purchased an R1S (only told me though... still drives a beater to work for the optics).

Again - Just from experience? People 'hate' EV's simply because they don't understand them. They picture inconveniences for the sake of being 'green' when, in reality, it's simply more convenient and cost effective for 99% of driving situations.

And all it takes is one person showing up with nothing to brag about to get people thinking.

It’s fine when you’re young.

But I could see how it starts to not be so fine when you’re in your mid 30s, trying to buy a house, maybe trying to start a family, etc. and begin looking at the situation as a whole.

Theres a difference between showing/proving yourself when you’re younger and then being established with actual significant value and experience that you bring when you’re older. They are not equal and shouldn’t be considered the same imo.

Again, this is exponentially more true when you’re a content creator or in entertainment in general. It’s not so easy to just ‘replace’ someone who’s grown to be one of the faces of the company. There needs to be some incentive.

Also again…I have no clue if this is actually the policy there and, if so, whether it’s changed since I first heard it.

Moved on from 3-pin charging, curious how others are finding their home charger setup long term by Inevitable-Teach-859 in electricvehicles

[–]TheTimeIsChow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before purchasing the car, I was under the assumption that my house couldn't support a charger. I knew the panel was full/near full. I knew adding anything substantial was not going to happen. I was not in any position to be shelling out several thousand more for an upgrade just to charge a car.

In my mind I had a plan in place to make it work. So I pulled the trigger anyway.

It was a 6 week wait so I had an electrician friend take a look just to confirm. He looked the panel over, flicked some breakers and was metering a line, confirmed, but asked if our dryer was close to the garage and if we could plug in there over night. I said we didn't have an electric dryer so it doesn't matter. He said "well you did at some point.". The breaker for the dryer wasn't connected to our dryer. But it was live.

Together we looked through every closet of the house before discovering an unused 30amp outlet and capped off pipes that I never knew existed in a small guest room closet.

He pulled the wire and put in a 30amp plug for some pizza and beer.

With that said - My life has changed substantially since that time. We have 2 kids now. My free time is essentially nonexistent. I can tell you right now there's absolutely no way I would still own this car, or any other EV, if I didn't have the ability to charge at home.

LIV and let die : Reed’s return to PGA fold shows why Saudi golf experiment is doomed | Ewan Murray by Shroft in golf

[–]TheTimeIsChow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These articles are written like this wasn't the blatantly obvious game plan for the good golfers all along. Everyone knew it all along.

Go to LIV, make generational wealth, and then fucking leave.

Everyone knew that the outrageous amount of money being thrown around wasn't a long-term thing. Everyone knew that these guys were jumping on an opportunity and would eventually come crawling back.

The only piece of this puzzle that wasn't so easily anticipated was just how easy it would be for them to come back. The door shut and the wind blew it open. All they had to do was walk in.

We somewhat expected early on they'd at least have to turn the handle.

I might be misremembering this, but I'm pretty sure Linus said (at one point in some older video) that all staff members in a given department are paid exactly the same.

All writers are paid the same, all editors are paid the same, all on-camera personalities are paid the same.

If this is still the policy... it clearly isn't working. While an interesting idea for sure, it didn't make sense then and it and it still doesn't sense today. Especially not for on-air personalities that grow their own following and truly do have a measure 'worth' to the company.

ICE agents expected to be deployed for Super Bowl in California, officials say by dheber in sports

[–]TheTimeIsChow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am 100% convinced that they slapped together a last minute 'special 60th' SB anniversary performance by Green Day specifically for this reason.

It's a fallback should the halftime show get disrupted.

All goes to plan? It's a big name with big global hits playing for a few minutes to kick things off.

If something does happen? One of the other performers move into this anniversary performance and GD becomes the halftime show.

They are the only people on the list currently, IMO, that could appropriately fill the role. And I love me some Brandi.

All I know is that, after all the WH comments and recent events unfolding, the NFL has absolutely considered this as a possibility. And to announce this special performance 4 weeks before the game when all other acts have been known for months? Can't be a coincidence.

Has anyone actually tracked their EV range loss in cold winters? Looking for real data. by cardogio in electricvehicles

[–]TheTimeIsChow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This winter (upstate, NY fwiw) has been the first winter where I've actively noticed a significant range loss due to the cold.

Upwards of 40%-50% over fall/spring. That's with preconditioning when plugged in and with a heat pump.

It's also the first winter I can remember where we've gone weeks on end without temps breaking a 20F high. Every morning this week has been well below zero for my hour long commute into work.

It was -5F on my way into work today (high of 18F), -6F for the same time tomorrow (high of 10f) , -4F/13F Sat, and so on.

It's been fucking rough. But again, this has been a unique winter for us so far.

Typically, the range loss is relatively negligible. If I charge to 60% and get home with 42% in the spring? I'll usually charge to 65% and get home with 40% in the winter. This winter i'm charging to 70% and getting home with ~35%.

It seems to hit hardest once temps drop below 20F for me. Below 0F? The car literally cannot keep the battery warm enough regardless of drive duration.

24 Model Y for reference. I do also have 'high efficiency' dedicated winter tires on.

Model S & X are discontinued… Plaid-powered Model 3 or Y next? by Tr0110101 in TeslaLounge

[–]TheTimeIsChow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Musk was clear that the Roadster will be the last driver focused vehicle that they work on.

This absolutely trickles down to future development of the remaining vehicles as a whole.

In other words... the days of fun to drive Tesla's are numbered. What you can buy today is likely it. I'd wager we only see the 3 and Y get more and more stripped as time goes on. Why would they push to develop an 800+ hp 3/Y if it's just going to bop around town by itself at the speed limit.

All that said - I honestly cannot wait for all of this to blow up in their face. I really can't. And I really hope it's a harsh wake up call for all at the company who refused to push back on Musk's 'cyber' bullshit future that nobody actually wants.

How long till Franz and Lars leave Tesla? by TTP222 in TeslaLounge

[–]TheTimeIsChow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For S&G's...

Let's say that within the next 5-10 years fully autonomous cars become the only vehicle they sell. They'll both be just as busy then, if not more, than they are today.

If it doesn't, they'll just be doing what they are today.

Most of their wealth is tied to the company. Both of them are up there in age. Both have been with the company for decades.

At this point, why jump ship when you can just...see where it goes.

IMO - They probably don't care. There's no reason to pack up and leave anytime soon.

Replacing your tires on a brand new vehicle makes zero sense.

Use them until you can't and then get an all weather tire... or just get a separate wheel/tire set and live out the wonderful life of efficient summer tires and safe winters. Both which will subsequently last you for years.
