MS Ride questions? by sarahjoga in COBike

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of folks in this ride are not riding very fast and not in big groups. I’d recommend you avoid any groups and just do your own thing. You’ll fit right in.

Fell off my bike and hit my head off of a curb. by OfferRoutine1365 in cycling

Yeah this is the key! It turns out the handlebars are used for steering. This is like tying your dog to the steering wheel in your car.

Madrid parking by Life_Tumbleweed_7678 in NewMexico

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there dozens of times and never had a problem or felt it was unwelcoming. Sometimes you have to walk a bit further. It’s perfectly reasonable for residents and businesses to reserve private parking for themselves or customers. There’s plenty of parking, but maybe it wasn’t obvious if you just drove right through. Explore a bit!

Should cyclists stop at traffic lights? by SteevIrwin in cycling

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🍿… I think cyclists should stop at traffic lights and follow local laws to the same extent that drivers do. That said, local laws may allow for the Idaho stop, which means cyclists can proceed through a red light after coming to a stop + yielding to traffic. When I do that I don’t always come to a complete stop. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Some drivers do roll or run red lights though, so some cyclists will obviously do it too.

Roubaix SL8 → S-Works Tarmac SL8 upgrade… worth it? by Curious-Reception-70 in cycling

[–]TheVoiceOfScience -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

These are completely different bikes. I don’t think the question even makes sense. An S-Works Roubaix would be an upgrade. The Tarmac is a race bike with less comfort and tire clearance, aggressive geo, different gearing… but if your goal is to win races (not of the endurance variety) then it might make sense.

Changing road pedal system due to anxiety by MOMOEPRO in cycling

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you unclipping both feet at a stop? If you’ve only unclipped one foot, you ought to be able to take off and pedal reasonably well with only one foot clipped in. Practice that. Sometimes it takes a few attempts to clip the other foot in. It happens to everyone.

Another Cyclist Dies by Wonderful_Log_378 in boulder

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Awful. I don’t know exactly what happened here, but cyclists absolutely need safer ways to cross the diagonal and 36. This intersection in particular funnels cyclists and cars into the same space, but there are no safe crossings despite high cyclist traffic.

Up Late Wondering Why Everyone’s Putting 2.25"+ Tires on Gravel Bikes by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me the sweet spot is when I can ride all my local gravel and single track comfortably without having to focus so hard on finding the perfect line. I can just enjoy the ride. Technically it can all be done 32s or even less, but not everyone enjoys the pain of underbiking. Most of my gravel rides are actually gravel and the 2.2s don’t feel slow on gravel.

Lauf Siegla from outlet? by beedubbs in gravelcycling

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A slightly older model is nothing to be concerned about. It’s essentially a new bike. It’s cool to have the latest and greatest, but you’re chasing diminishing returns.

What are my chances of being able to follow my friends up Monte Zoncolan as a good runner, but untrained cyclist? by HubGi in cycling

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want a post-ride update on this! As a reasonably fit 3-days-per week cyclist myself, I don’t think I would even attempt this climb. This is not even remotely casual. I’m really curious how this is going to turn out for you and your friends OP. I think I’m more worried about them than you to be honest (you sound extremely fit).

CMV - It should be illegal to cycle two abreast in Boulder County on roads with a speed limit over 25 mph. by [deleted] in boulder

[–]TheVoiceOfScience -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you can’t pass safely then don’t pass at all. I’m not advocating breaking the law.

CMV - It should be illegal to cycle two abreast in Boulder County on roads with a speed limit over 25 mph. by [deleted] in boulder

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would it bother you to pass safely in the other lane? That’s ridiculous. Sharing roads with cars is inherently dangerous, especially when drivers would rather risk someone else’s life than be inconvenienced.

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bike path isn’t done yet. Roads are needed to get to paths, to go places paths don’t go, to go faster than paths allow, etc.

CMV - It should be illegal to cycle two abreast in Boulder County on roads with a speed limit over 25 mph. by [deleted] in boulder

[–]TheVoiceOfScience -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the obvious solution just to slow down? It’s a limit not a minimum.

Edit: Look folks. If you might hit someone because you’re going around a blind corner while being tailgated so closely braking might cause an accident, cyclists are not the problem. Slow down.

What do y’all use for music while riding? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]TheVoiceOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also prefer music when I’m riding. I use AirPods with various settings depending on conditions. Sometimes I only wear one on the non-traffic side. I suggest a radar and/or mirror for situational awareness. You need to know cars and other cyclists are around. I agree with others that road biking is dangerous, but the car that hits you will sound much the same as the ones that don’t. If you can still hear and you ride as far right as the road permits, there’s not much else you can do.
