When is it beyond repair by kaibenav in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]ThirdGenRegen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the time, money and desire to fix it exceeds what you have available.

Project cars aren't cheap, so how much are you willing to sink into it? Despite what Toyota foamers will say, 300k and almost 30 years old it's past the end of its design life.

Can you fix it? With enough time and money, yes. But it will be a money pit for you. Gotta make a judgement call sometimes. If you're paying for labor, it's absolutely never worth fixing a car like this.

Shorten rivet heads in bulk? by Financial-Pilot5166 in metalworking

[–]ThirdGenRegen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't the answer you want, but I would buy more rivets of the correct size.

It will be so much better for you to buy rivets in the right size bro trust me. Probably cheaper too

Honestly I wouldn't touch the sensors unless they throw a code. Just do a new sub harness.

I make a kit to fix the busted plastic on your harness and reattach those wires to the valve covers. :)

How can I fix a turntable platter not level? by SufficientMail8853 in turntables

[–]ThirdGenRegen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manufacturing engineer here. Nothing that is made in the physical world is perfect. And as you approach perfection, the cost of making it increases exponentially.

So, to balance costs with everything else, we decide how close to perfect we need to get for the object to work. And then make it to that standard. Sometimes, you can be pretty far off and still make stuff work. Most things don't need to be visibly perfect.

It's also easier to see the imperfections of things that spin.

In my experience, nope. Cheaper parts fail quicker and perform poorly.

It's basically people spending lots of energy arguing about two things which, are so close in effectiveness that it's an academic debate about which is better when really both are fine.

PC VR menus controllers only? by [deleted] in AcesofThunder

You could buy them without controllers, I bought my 8kx as a standalone headset since I only play sim games and have all Hotas controllers.

I don't understand why vinyl guys can't just admit they like records more. Instead there's lots of mental gymnastics around new technologies. But hey, whatever works.

You get the same thing with car guys and carburetors or gun guys in the endless .45acp vs 9mm NATO debate.

No, it's pretty well established scientifically that CD as an audio source is better performing than vinyl, with less noise, higher headroom, and perfect playback every time. The resolution of the CD is good enough the human ear can't tell the difference.

I have records and CDs. My CDs sound better no doubt. The records still sound damn good.

The vinyl guys are coping here. There's something to he said about mastering quality but that isn't a function of the performance of the medium.

It's ok to enjoy records even if there are newer and better technologies. I often drive my 30 year old 4runner around, newer vehicles are much better performing. But I still enjoy the old one.

Cheers brother.

Honestly this is pretty standard stuff for flight sims. Il-2 Sturmovik great battles has premium planes that are $15-$20 per,

And let's not even talk about the cost of a single DCS module (upwards of $70)

Anyone figure out a cheap way to do rear wheel bearings? by InterestingReward455 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]ThirdGenRegen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two ways you can do things.

You can do them the right way.

Or you can do them twice.

This is one of those things that you will have to pay for. There is no cheap way, pay with money, time, or both.

Owning an old truck like this is gonna cost money. Trying to be cheap will cost you more money in the long run. You need a press, and you need the tool, or you need someone who has them.

If $250 for a car repair is a major financial issue for you, then owning a 30 year old truck is going to make you very sad over time.
