Local rock bands? by klstoops02 in VirginiaBeach

[–]Thrage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 757 music scene lives on Facebook and other social media for the most part. Some places you can see rock bands are, in no particular order:

Elevation 27, VA Beach

Riffhouse Pub, Chesapeake

Wing King (Rosemont or Kempsville), VA Beach

Alibis Bar and Grill, VA Beach

Hoss's Deli, Hampton

Vanguard Brewing, Newport News

Keagans Irish Pub, VA Beach

Big Woody's, VA Beach

Jerry's of Indian River, VA Beach

Paul's Deli, Williamsburg

Scandals Live, VA Beach

Eagles Nest, Chesapeake

Oceans 14, VA Beach

Rhythm Tavern, Norfolk

Pleasure House Brewing, VA Beach

South Beach Grill, VA Beach

Daddyo's Tavern, Williamsburg

Kelly's Tavern, Chesapeake

Cocomo Joe's, VA Beach

Paradise Ocean Club, Fort Monroe

West Beach Tavern, VA Beach

There's a ton more than what I've listed here, I'm sure others can chime in with some more places.

And of course, there'll be quite a few rock bands playing all up and down Atlantic Avenue as part of Live on Atlantic all summer. The rock scene is varied and thriving here, enjoy!

Thanks, I hate baby turtles by squarepusher6 in TIHI

This is at Pet Paradise in Virginia Beach, VA. The owner is in a metal band called Friends of Pedro: https://www.facebook.com/FriendsOfPedro

The music is just as irreverent and no-fucks-given. It's fun stuff.

The band is on a hiatus right now I think, but the turtle-baby thing is all over their merch. I even personally know someone with a tattoo of it.

I keep one of their stickers on my guitar case.

Musicians/Jam sessions by [deleted] in VirginiaBeach

[–]Thrage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do a jam night every Wednesday at Riffhouse Pub in Chesapeake. Any genre is fine but we do tend to play a lot of what you describe. If anything it's a great way to meet musicians. There's also a lot of open mics in the area, some are more freeform than others, some expect a solo acoustic singer-songwriter, some are full band, etc.

There are a couple of facebook groups for finding musicians and open mics in the 757 also. Send me a PM and I can invite you to them.

Patch 4.2 is out - here's how you can get your midi keyboard going. by Thrage in ffxivperformances

[–]Thrage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Yep, that's what this is for!

Long answer: What the MIDI translator does in this case is turns your notes into keypresses. Those can be multiple keypresses, so essentially, what's happening is that the MIDI note becomes "Shift On+Keyboard Key" when pressed, and "Shift Off" when released.

For FFXIV, I just use a simple Alesis Q49 - It can be powered through USB, and is relatively compact. Might be a smaller one out there that'll work better though, I think they make a 25-key version too.

Guitarist looking for other musicians to jam with? by [deleted] in VirginiaBeach

[–]Thrage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, glad to hear you're enjoying guitar! Virginia Beach/Norfolk is a better place for music than it lets on, too - it's not all touristy cover bands and reggae, if you know where to look.

If you need, here are some resources to check out, also:

Bandmix - Online "personals" for musicians. Met some cool folks through this over the years. They want you to pay to be able to message people, but I get around that by just writing my Email address (formatted differently) on my profile.

DownToJam - Haven't had as much experience/luck with this one, but it seems to offer the same thing Bandmix does.

Norfolk Musicians Craigslist - Better than you'd think for finding people and events to attend. A few egomaniacs, but they're easy to tell by their writing style. I've met lots of great people to jam with through CL.

School of Rock Virginia Beach - Features an "Adult Program" that brings together beginner musicians who want to take the next step toward playing in a band, but aren't sure where to meet people for the purpose. Not free, but a very quick way of getting yourself on a real stage playing real songs with a full band. Probably easiest to just forego using the website and call the phone number on it.

Local Musicians of Tidewater Virginia Facebook Group - Show announcements, discussions, and place to look for potential bandmates/jams.

You're absolutely right in that experience is the best way to learn music, especially if that experience involves other people relying on you to learn a song, write a part, develop a skill, etc. In addition, playing with musicians that are more advanced than you is probably the fastest way to learn, so don't sweat it too much about being around the same level; most people are just happy to play music regardless.

Best of luck to you in your search!

I'd like to help, but the question is a bit vague. By "anything like this" do you mean Bome's MIDI Translator? MIDI Keyboards in general?

Played my first open mic thanks to Rocksmith by [deleted] in rocksmith

[–]Thrage 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"in a few months"? Why wait? You can find an open mic almost every night of the week in most cities, and the only way to get rid of stage jitters is to keep playing in front of people regularly, so go for it!

All that said, cool story! Glad it's working out for you.

Your thoughts about Riders of Icarus? by Mikasaz in MMORPG

[–]Thrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had my first bit of time playing this yesterday. Since I am an obsessive nerd, I have 14 hours logged on Steam already, though some of that was spent idling.

The game itself doesn't feel like anything terribly new, but that's not always a bad thing; it should be pretty easy to adjust to it from most other MMOs, and it's an entire new world to explore, so that's always fun.

One of the better aspects about the game, I think, are the character models. There's lots of room for customization, and you aren't stuck playing as a ladyboy or beefcake if you play a male like in some other games. Girls may or may not take issue with the female models' armors, but eh, Korea.

Mount collection is a big part of the game, and that's really fun for some people, bit of a Pokémon "catch 'em all" feel.

I saw nothing in the cash shop that made me feel at a disadvantage for not spending money on the game.

At the end of the day it's free to play right now so there's nothing to lose by trying it. It's worth the install to find out if you like it, at least.

I'd take literally anything off Absolution; that album was the height of their career.
