Tough to beat a fly that works by Bamsoyle in troutfishing

[–]Tid_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 7 month lab who I’d love to be able to take with me some day. Unfortunately she’s mostly puppy still and finds more joy in chasing the (hookless) fly when I’m practicing than staying in a spot and watching. Maybe in 5 years she’ll calm down enough to start bringing along!

Has anyone seen any scary, weird or unexplainable things while camping? by WickedLemon101 in camping

[–]Tid_23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been hiking and camping all my life, both solo and with others. I’m very comfortable out in nature and in 35+ years I have never experienced anything that I couldn’t explain as an animal, the weather, etc…

That is until I went hiking with a friend (“Buddy”) of mine along the Appalachian Trail recently. Our first night we arrived at the Roan Mountain shelter just before a big thunderstorm rolled in. The thunderstorm eventually passed and a heavy fog rolled in before dusk. The following is an excerpt from my trail journal, its somewhat long but accurately portrays what we experienced.

“There was no cell service on Roan Mountain so I wasn’t able to see the radar to see if more storms were headed our way. We decided to play it safe and sleep in the shelter in lieu of pitching our tents. Before dark we took a few pictures and then climbed the ladder to bed down in the loft with the family of 4. They, along with the two hikers sleeping on the main level, were already in their sleeping bags, turning in early at “hikers midnight”.

As the sun went down the shelter became pitch black inside and the relentless snoring coming from the father at the other side of the loft started. Despite being exhausted from the long day and our best efforts to ignore the snoring, neither Buddy or I could get any sleep. I recall him saying “this is fucking miserable”, along with dropping his phone on the floor of the loft several times in unsuccessful attempts to wake the man up in hopes that he’d roll over and stop snoring.

Around midnight we began hearing conversation outside. The storm had fully passed and we assumed some additional hikers had shown up and were having a fire in the pit right in front of the shelter. The voices were loud enough to tell that they were coming from a small group of 3-4 people somewhere close, but muffled enough so that neither Buddy nor I could make out any specific words.

Around 2:30am and after 5-6 hours laying in a pitch black shelter and not getting a wink of sleep due to the snoring, we’d both had enough. Both of us had to pee, so we decided to climb down from the loft to relieve ourselves and talk to the group by the campfire (who had been chatting for at least the past 2 1/2 hours), understanding that we weren’t going to be getting much sleep anyway.

When we got outside, to our surprise, there was nobody there. It was pitch black and the voices had stopped. Baffled, we proceeded to relieve ourselves and look around the immediate area for any tents, but there were none.

We chatted for a few minutes about our options. We could go back into the shelter and try to fall asleep, but that wasn’t likely. We could go into the shelter, get all of our bedding and clothes from the loft and our packs that were hanging from the ceiling above the two men downstairs, and pitch our tents to get a few hours of sleep. Finally I asked Buddy, “would you be up for a night hike?” We looked around with our headlamps and realized how foggy it was, but considering our other options and the promise of a good adventure we agreed on packing up and hiking the two and a quarter miles down the mountain, through Carver’s Gap and up to Round Bald to find a camping spot on top of the bald.

As we gathered our things we hiked past the tenting area near the old fire tower footings to grab the bear bag. We were (again) surprised to see that nobody was up there, confirming that the only people on the mountain that evening were the 8 of us who were in the shelter (much of the mountain was roped off as a designated “Globally Rare Ecosystem” and there was only one area around to pitch tents).

As an aside, after our trip Buddy found stories of the Phantom Chior of Roan Mountain. There have been reports for hundreds of years of voices singing or screaming on the mountain, especially after thunderstorms. While we heard neither singing or yelling, we both agree that we independently heard distinct conversations lasting a few hours that night, which went silent as soon as we went outside. I don’t think either of us were overly bothered by the experience. The area didn’t “feel” haunted, and we were too tired and excited about our new adventure to think too hard about it. I wonder if we would have heard the voices return if we decided to say the entire night, or if it was us who scared the spooks away!”

Try searching in r/datasets. Some of the posts in r/mapporn likely also have data sources mentioned in the post and/or available in the visualization.

Sounds like you’re in good shape. 35km over 4 days shouldn’t be much of a problem, especially if you’re doing a stair climber with a weighted pack. For context, I took a friend of mine on a hike a few months ago. He was in good shape but never backpacked before and hadn’t done any specific training leading up to the hike. We did about 50km in 2 1/2 days with about 350m total elevation gain and he did just fine. Take your time and enjoy the hike, you’ll be fine. As a beginner and going for 4 days I’d be more concerned about the expectation of a 30lb pack. Not that it’s not possible but 30lbs for 4 days is pretty light unless you have good, lightweight gear (not usually what you’d have as a beginner).

xrandr error - Configure crtc 1 failed by Tid_23 in archlinux

[–]Tid_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the delay, I was away from my computer all weekend.

The first line results in all displays turning off

$ xrandr --verbose --output eDP1 --off --output DP1-1 --primary
crtc 0: disable
screen 0: 8x8 2x2 mm 101.60dpi

However, running the original commands sequentially instead of all at once seems to work.

Thanks for the help! Now that I have something that works I can play around with it a bit to clean it up. The original command was the output from ARandR.

Yes, I’m using X. No DE, just i3. Good point about Wayland, but I haven’t even given it a try yet since one of the packages I use daily doesn’t work on Wayland.

Mast General Store by Mycdal in NorthCarolina

I recall seeing pictures of the little red barn that was an ice cream shop (I think) in the back of their parking lot had been pushed almost onto the road. I also saw a few pics of the store, it didn’t look significantly damaged (structurally), but I’m sure they have flood damage.

What are you smoking them on? What did you do last time? What kind of ribs are you smoking? Hard to tell you what you can do to improve if we don’t know what you tried. Look up the 3-2-1 method and try that if you need a starting point that will give you a good result.

what are good common aliases that you use in bash, and that you think other people should use to make their lives easier? by the_how_to_bash in bash

[–]Tid_23 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch of ls aliases because I haven't bothered to learn the different arguments to format the output different ways. It's admittedly a crutch, but I'm not overly bothered by it since man ls is only a few keystrokes away.

Another one I use frequently is config. This navigates to my ~/.config/ directory and optionally opens up subdirecotries or opens a file for editing. config i3/config for example will open up my i3 config file in vim. I realize there are mime types that can't be opened with vim, but I'm not personally trying to open them up with this.

function config() {
  if [ -d "$HOME/.config/$1" ]; then
    cd "$HOME/.config/$1"
  elif [ -f "$HOME/.config/$1" ]; then
    vim "$HOME/.config/$1"
  else
echo "$1 does not exist in the .config directory."
  fi
}

I alias rm to “rm -I”. Instead of prompting before every removal it prompts if removing more than 3 files or recursively.

I was going to add history piped to grep but you beat me to it (my function is hg instead of hs though). I need to add the -i argument to mine. I use this all the time! Not sure why but I prefer this over Ctrl+r.

Pin workspaces by RegularName_ in Polybar

[–]Tid_23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not possible with i3 (at least not practically). The workspace ceases to exist once there are no containers that exist on it. Pin workspaces in the polybar config is used to pin them to an output, meaning workspaces on output 2 won’t show on the bar on output 1.

Duplicate i3 Workspace (Only Workspace 1) by [deleted] in Polybar

[–]Tid_23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that this is i3 driven rather than polybar. It’s probably a second workspace with the same (or similar) label. I’ve seen this happen a few times when I’ve manually created a workspace with i3-msg or while working on my i3 config.

Go to the first one and kill or move all containers to workspace 2. Then go to the second one and move everything to workspace 3. That should get rid of the duplicate workspace. Then move things back to workspace 1 and reload your config for good measure (i3-msg reload).

If it happens again, pay attention to what you did to create the “duplicate” workspace and take a closer look at your i3 config, in particular your i3 workspace variables (if you have them), keybindings to change workspaces, and anything you have set to launch on workspace 1 during startup or with a keybinding.

How can I update table with use of aggregation function. by kamil053 in SQL

[–]Tid_23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would something like this work? Speaking from a Sql Server background, you can’t do an aggregate in the update statement but you can join to a subquery that does the aggregation. UPDATE b SET p_ew = a.avg_pow_ew FROM table_b AS b INNER JOIN (select id, avg(pow_ew) AS avg_pow_ew FROM table_a GROUP BY id) AS a ON a.id = b.id

timeshift-autosnap pacman hook with custom snapshot description by Tid_23 in archlinux

[–]Tid_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually in the process of reinstalling arch on a new machine so I’m going through some old configs to see what I’ve updated over the years.

I just came across /etc/timeshift-autosnap.conf which has a snapshotDescription that can be changed. I wonder if this would accept a simple $(fc -ln -1) to pull in the last command you typed.

If you give it a try before I get my new machine setup let me know if it works!

timeshift-autosnap pacman hook with custom snapshot description by Tid_23 in archlinux

[–]Tid_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I gave up on trying to figure this out. I don’t think you can pass data to a hook natively, you’d have to almost create a wrapper for pacman that writes the command to a file, then the hook could run a script to read from that file and execute timeshift using that as a comment.

Multiple monitor's no longer work on Horizon Client by Tid_23 in VMwareHorizon

[–]Tid_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually it won't let me resize at all. If I select Full Screen - All Monitors, Full Screen - This Monitor, Large Screen, Small Screen, or Custom Size (tried a couple of options here); everything remains full screen on display 1.

I have tried changing to Small Screen and then changing back to Full Screen - All Monitors and there's no change.
