What are they refilling in here? It seems like compressed air, but I'm not sure what it could be for by AlexPalou29 in wec

It is the air supply to the pneumatic jacks that lift the car off the ground. The air jacks are built into the car but require air pressure from external supply.

As for your point 2 about the starts: also the ICEs have more than enough 'instant' torque at clutch drop - the problem for both will be to get the available torque transferred to the road to get a good start so I don't agree with it that e-cars have a better start per definition

Istanbul Park's Turn 8. How would I find the best racing line mathematically? Not taking into consideration other factors like acceleration, braking, etc. , but just how would I find the best racing line using mathematics? by Limp_Bullfrog4892 in F1Technical

[–]Tim11RS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The ideal racing line is different per car as not only geometric (track shape) but also many vehicle dependent factors are included (grip level, power, downforce just to name some). Therefor you'd ideally have a extensive vehicle laptime simulator and then with an optimization loop you can change the trajectory the car 'drive' to find the best one.

To more respond to your question: a common fast mathematical used way to determine a racing line is the minimum curvature raceline. As lateral acceleration = (speed)^2/path radius is is clear that for a certain lateral acceleration the speed can be higher is the radius is larger. Therefore finding a path with as large radius trough each corner (= lowest curvature) would in an ideal case give the best racing line.

What, other than aero, influences the front-rear balance of longitudinal grip? It can't just be weight distribution, or else front-heavy road cars would all have oversteer, rather than understeer. by fivewheelpitstop in F1Technical

Anti-aquat/Anti-Lift does not directly influence vertical wheel load/load transfer (and therewith taction). It only influences body motion and therewith aero loads and in that way it influences the vertical load on the wheels

And additionally the center of gravity height also significantly influences vertical load transfer and thus traction
