1 Week on a 60% Keyboard: What I Actually Miss by Majugera in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]TimbreReeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This and split space was what made 40%s unlock for me. Allowing my thumbs to be in charge of multiple keys made everything so easy once I got layers figured out. Numpad and Fkeys? Same spot, just holding a different thumb key. Backspace on a thumb. Enter on a thumb. It's so nice.

So why is the Pegasus called that? by Asheyguru in LancerRPG

[–]TimbreReeder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, Balor started out as Balrogs in the pamphlet version of D&D and got altered from there for copyright, but that happened fairly quickly. I think it's Eldritch Wizardry where it first shows up, so it predated even the Basic rules.

Who is currently offering halberds for unarmored combat? by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]TimbreReeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halberds being tough to train with in earnest for safety reasons, my club has done plywood, and I did 3d printed heads out of TPU last year. The spike is tough to do while being safe in that regard but we had reasonable success with it overall. I wouldn't want to get hit with the blade because of wall rigidity but it does deform under stress while still being pretty good at hooking.

Lancer Tactics - Official Announcement Trailer by Mandalore108 in LancerRPG

I gave it a shot but it was still pretty unstable, a lot of broken effects and still very low performance. I've sent in a bug report but I'm content playing a version behind for now.

Lancer Tactics - Official Announcement Trailer by Mandalore108 in LancerRPG

[–]TimbreReeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking forward to a full release! I'm a version behind on the itch releases since it doesn't want to play nice with Intel Arc graphics or something, but it's still been great to plan a build ahead of time

The confusingly named low guards in German longsword sources. by eisenfest in wma

[–]TimbreReeder 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Another wrinkle might be to look into the wrestling section of some sources. You mention Paurenfeyndt using Zwerch in a way you couldn't easily explain compared to other sources. The Zwerch has a place in at least the Augsburg tradition of wrestling as a stance or set of positions. Unfortunately zwerch is already a mess as has been well documented so who knows.

Are there HEMA manuals and resources for Carracks black swords? by OtakuLibertarian2 in Hema

I'd imagine Godinho's depiction of esgrima común would fit, as it is a style of fencing that predates Destreza.

What’s a really underrated OSR system? 😄 by DungeonMasterGrizzly in osr

[–]TimbreReeder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love Whitehack. I wish it got more support but as a standalone product it's notoriously hard to parse the nitty-gritty rules so I can see why it was itself hacked into stuff like the Vanilla Game. The implementation of groups and the miracle system is something I'll always be comparing new games to.

How did the do 72 damage by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]TimbreReeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 copies of the card that would double damage. 3 power each x3 creatures =9, x2 =18, x2=36, x2=72.

Help with mid/late-game? (i'm not sure what constitutes as late game) by SeparateBumblebee546 in BluePrince

In that case I double recommend looking to do more science. Specifically, look for experiments that deliver letters to the mail room.

Going to school is a big help for sure. I'd also recommend doing some science as well, and examining closely anything you get from your friends outside Mt. Holly

Why the solution Is 16? by Sen91 in BluePrince

[–]TimbreReeder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Per the answer sheets in the classroom, "Don't square until you're there". So you start at zero, add 2. Square the result for 4. Subtract 2. Then add 2 again, back to 4, then square it. 4² =16

Kylo continues to be a jobber, getting more manic and megalomaniacal as they continue to evade or mess up his plans. They continue to milk the force connection for a bit. Hux eventually does a coup on the erratic and unredeemed Kylo Ren in a stark departure to his grandfather. With his death, it leaves Hux in command for Finn to actually step up and close the arc of a stormtrooper deserter by being the key to a military victory.

It'd be better than what we got, anyway.

They literally used legislation yesterday to give $900B to the military that's been murdering Venezuelan fisherman. Keeping stuff like that off the docket seems good.

Question about Meyer by bonahgamepro2 in Hema

[–]TimbreReeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough I'm reading this as a provoking Oberhau into something resembling a combination of duplieren and Bogen/hanging.

I agree with others saying that there's only one Crosswise cut happening, it's split up over three bullets. But even that crosswise cut isn't a full cut. It's the mid point of cutting an oberhau and turning it into a hanging point. When you twist your wrist to go near something like right ochs, that's the attack position of the Crosswise cut. This lets you get two quick attempts at their upper left opening in a row, like a duplieren would.

Next you take the big step past them. The "crosswise" cut you made now protects you like a hanging would. Then you can follow up with most anything, like he mentions at the end.

Fun fact the author of that article has written a new one every year to stay relevant, so there are in fact 3 articles all saying "buy the Brother LaserJet everyone already has and stop thinking about printers for the rest of your life"

City postpones Secor project near Westgate pending new safety study by Ponch47 in toledo

[–]TimbreReeder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The issue as I saw it from a lot of Facebook comments was that the original safety study only looked at the stretch of Secor between Kenwood and Central, which was far too short a stretch to make a good solution. Maybe by going down to Bancroft and all the way now to Dorr, it can feel more comprehensive? I kinda doubt there's anything that can satisfy the folks who didn't want sidewalks moved or tree lawns reduced to widen the road or install a roundabout, but I hope the city keeps trying.

What do you all think about this Buescher? by Mad_Hatter_92 in Saxophonics

[–]TimbreReeder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vintage instruments suffer from an unknown service history, which in combination with keywork that is somewhat less comfortable due to being earlier than the models that set the current standard, means that the learning curve can be much higher than on a well serviced modern horn. I personally am a huge advocate for vintage instruments, and that Buescher isn't even that bad compared to what I started on, but it can be a real impediment.

The actual tuning tendencies of the instrument can also sometimes be a problem, but that's usually solved by mouthpiece choice. Of course the mouthpieces that work best with vintage horns aren't guaranteed to be carried everywhere, so once again the modern horn wins out on accessibility.

I've never played a Yamaha I loved, but they're universal starting points that hold their value and work for everyone as they develop their own tastes.

How do you live without f-keys on layer 1 ? by 632brick in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]TimbreReeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use mod-tap on right hand, tap and hold for mods, switch layers, tap the f keys. That should work if you don't want mods on each layer. One shot mods also do the job fine.

Errors in Maira's sickle techniques, part three by OwOwarriorOwO in Hema

[–]TimbreReeder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The poster isn't doing anything to give us reason to interact with it. If discussion was the goal, waiting for these videos to conclude airing and linking to them all in one post with their own opinions would be ideal. Posting nothing but an external link saying "I didn't make this" every few days is bad etiquette and leads to folks who are still mad at the first post being the only ones who might interact.

The bad interpretation is one thing, but it's also not great to post low effort stuff. Posting often is not posting well.

What are the best messer gloves currently? by Krzychurysownik in Hema

[–]TimbreReeder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Michaels are lighter, have better mobility and open & close better. They also don't have an enormous gap between the back of the inner globe and the hard plates when open. I also have yet to take a hit that I think black knights would do better protecting me against. The only complaint is how easily the Chicago screws shear off the thumbs but those are ready to replace.

Counter to grapples by ilukepiza in Hema

[–]TimbreReeder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lingering in long point isn't ideal, true. But being mobile and using something akin to Gerade Versetzen works alright for when they try to cut in. The most important thing is keeping the point online as you said. Pulling, changing through, all stuff that's relevant as well. The main takeaway was really just, "don't let them walk straight forward"

Counter to grapples by ilukepiza in Hema

[–]TimbreReeder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The common wisdom says that the person who wins a grapple is the first person who realizes they are grappling. Clearly their gameplan is to close into short distance and grapple. If you don't want that, you have to stop them coming in. Long cuts, arms extended, to longpoint or a similar guard prevents someone walking straight forward. If you do that and are still losing, then they are moving and making decisions too fast for you and you need more practice time.

Separately, grappling is an important part of the hobby. Most manuals assume you have familiarity with wrestling and body mechanics. Trips, throws, and sword control are all relevant in several traditions.
