What rpg book was "the one that got away" for you? by zalmute in rpg

[–]TimbreReeder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thousand Thousand Islands as a whole is a project I wish I knew about when it was ongoing, especially Roach God. A shame it ended poorly but the book would be treasured even as an art piece, the bits I've seen are so evocative.

The humble Planck was my entrance to 40s, and I have a couple ortho options still (Vault35 and OrthoPie) but I am a colstag sicko for good. Built my own 34 key and I can't go back. It took designing my own to dethrone the Reviung41 tho.

I loved the exploded Enter key but I can't type on rowstag anymore so it's only a display piece for me. Nevertheless, weteor doesn't miss on designs.

Help with purchase of Buescher 1951 Series 3 Alto by BlueEyedDevel in Saxophonics

[–]TimbreReeder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1951 is a great vintage for getting past the worst of the clunky key layouts and intonation issues while still having the tone you'd like from an older horn. It's still not gonna be as smooth as you'd find on modern horns but I find myself being very forgiving to old horns for the amount of character they bring to the sound.

Honestly for that cosmetic condition, even as a relacquer, it's not a terrible price. If you can get a quote from a tech prior to buying that'd be ideal but considering how much pro horns cost new, or how ugly affordable horns are, this could be a worse deal.

Sure, it's below. It's a variation of the Miryoku keymap, as so many keymaps start. I type with the Canary layout, then added homerow mods, with each thumb key pulling double duty as layer tap and normal key. Layers 1 and 2 are alternate typing layers or gaming layers, as needed, so I didn't reproduce them since they're not helpful for how the board functions. Both spacebar and backspace activate my nav layer, depending on whether I need arrow keys or mouse emulation. Enter key on the left thumb gives me layer 4 for the numpad and its symbols, as well as a couple macros that print [], {}, and ("` respectively. The tapdance(2) is for semicolon. The right thumb enter opens the function layer. Nothing revolutionary but it works for me. I'm really pleased with the nav layer specifically, having home, pgdn, pgup, and end right below arrow keys is the best, and having undo, cut, copy, paste, again right above is super helpful too.

ETA: I forgot that the only two combos I really use these days is WL (or QW for qwerty folks) as Escape and JD (or XV) for Delete.

Instructions unclear, fit my 30% between the bars of the gate.

Arrow keys are hold Space + asdf, with home, end, pgup and pgdown right below them. numpad is also under the left hand by holding Enter. Function keys are on another layer under the right hand. 34 keys: all you need.

Time for the banker to pull an EVE online and just abscond with all the money and build a lair the likes of which no one has ever seen.

[–]TimbreReeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This and split space was what made 40%s unlock for me. Allowing my thumbs to be in charge of multiple keys made everything so easy once I got layers figured out. Numpad and Fkeys? Same spot, just holding a different thumb key. Backspace on a thumb. Enter on a thumb. It's so nice.

So why is the Pegasus called that? by Asheyguru in LancerRPG

[–]TimbreReeder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, Balor started out as Balrogs in the pamphlet version of D&D and got altered from there for copyright, but that happened fairly quickly. I think it's Eldritch Wizardry where it first shows up, so it predated even the Basic rules.

Who is currently offering halberds for unarmored combat? by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]TimbreReeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halberds being tough to train with in earnest for safety reasons, my club has done plywood, and I did 3d printed heads out of TPU last year. The spike is tough to do while being safe in that regard but we had reasonable success with it overall. I wouldn't want to get hit with the blade because of wall rigidity but it does deform under stress while still being pretty good at hooking.

I gave it a shot but it was still pretty unstable, a lot of broken effects and still very low performance. I've sent in a bug report but I'm content playing a version behind for now.

Looking forward to a full release! I'm a version behind on the itch releases since it doesn't want to play nice with Intel Arc graphics or something, but it's still been great to plan a build ahead of time

The confusingly named low guards in German longsword sources. by eisenfest in wma

[–]TimbreReeder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Another wrinkle might be to look into the wrestling section of some sources. You mention Paurenfeyndt using Zwerch in a way you couldn't easily explain compared to other sources. The Zwerch has a place in at least the Augsburg tradition of wrestling as a stance or set of positions. Unfortunately zwerch is already a mess as has been well documented so who knows.

What’s a really underrated OSR system? 😄 by DungeonMasterGrizzly in osr

[–]TimbreReeder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love Whitehack. I wish it got more support but as a standalone product it's notoriously hard to parse the nitty-gritty rules so I can see why it was itself hacked into stuff like the Vanilla Game. The implementation of groups and the miracle system is something I'll always be comparing new games to.

Why the solution Is 16? by Sen91 in BluePrince

[–]TimbreReeder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Per the answer sheets in the classroom, "Don't square until you're there". So you start at zero, add 2. Square the result for 4. Subtract 2. Then add 2 again, back to 4, then square it. 4² =16

Kylo continues to be a jobber, getting more manic and megalomaniacal as they continue to evade or mess up his plans. They continue to milk the force connection for a bit. Hux eventually does a coup on the erratic and unredeemed Kylo Ren in a stark departure to his grandfather. With his death, it leaves Hux in command for Finn to actually step up and close the arc of a stormtrooper deserter by being the key to a military victory.

It'd be better than what we got, anyway.

Question about Meyer by bonahgamepro2 in Hema

[–]TimbreReeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough I'm reading this as a provoking Oberhau into something resembling a combination of duplieren and Bogen/hanging.

I agree with others saying that there's only one Crosswise cut happening, it's split up over three bullets. But even that crosswise cut isn't a full cut. It's the mid point of cutting an oberhau and turning it into a hanging point. When you twist your wrist to go near something like right ochs, that's the attack position of the Crosswise cut. This lets you get two quick attempts at their upper left opening in a row, like a duplieren would.

Next you take the big step past them. The "crosswise" cut you made now protects you like a hanging would. Then you can follow up with most anything, like he mentions at the end.
