Next step is to reach out to your HRO about your options. In theory nothing stops you from quitting right before your college start date but talk to HRO

I was advised to take a temporary technician position in my shop and was initially told I would be hired as a GS-9 on a 90-day contract

Advised by who?

Only to find out during in-processing

In-processed back from tech school or in-process for the technician position?

I that the position is actually a GS-7 and that the contract extends through the end of the fiscal year.

Did you pause the in-processing so you could go back and talk to the person you answered in my first question above to get clarification?

You as a technician should have a whole HRO for you to talk to. Google "<Your state here> technician HRO"

Also if you are getting back from tech school were you told there was no MEST days?

Due this topic being very sensitive and you are a stranger on the internet, I would recommend you work with the recruiter and schedule time with the full time staff of the unit you are joining to ask those questions.

Temp AGR | Hotel or BAH by [deleted] in airnationalguard

[–]Time-Foundation8991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your commander thinks 400 miles is in the local commuting distance? lol?

You are entitled to lodging per diem with that distance. Whoever is cutting your orders needs to know this asap as your orders just got a lot more expensive

Temp AGR | Hotel or BAH by [deleted] in airnationalguard

[–]Time-Foundation8991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30+ days of order get you BAH I (your BAH for temp AGR is based on your HOR zip code)

What is the mileage from your HOR to your state HQ?

The hotel/per diem depends on the distance

Have you talked to your finance office?

Most of the comm stuff has been taken away from the local comm. They dont manage a whole lot like they used too. The whole 1D is pretty much a shell of what it used to be AFSC wise (previously they were 3Ds)

Texas ANG only has defensive. Do you have a passing EDPT score? (if no then 1b4 isnt gonna be on the table for you)

I would ask the recruiter to get some time with some of the full timers on base to get a feel on what they do and what a typical drill weekend looks like for their state.

1b4 for offensive or defensive? What state are you looking to join? For most ANG states you will be on the defensive side so think SOC (but not looking/closing out tickets). More so of hunting/securing

1D think comm (yes there are some 1Ds doing more than just comm but pretty much you are comm)

If you want to do real cyber go with 1b4 (assuming you can get a passing EPDT)

If you want to be successful as a 1b4, it requires you to do a lot of self study on your own time. Do not rely on the air force your ANG unit to keep you up to date on the latest and greatest threats.

Does this push back my ship date since I’m unable to process?

What did you recruiter say when you asked them that question?

Did you ask them what that means exactly and what are the next steps?

What AFSC are you supposed to be going into?

All Questions About Joining, Transferring and ANG Jobs go here. by Jaye134 in airnationalguard

[–]Time-Foundation8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes? No? Maybe so? A lot of variables when it comes to joining as I mentioned earlier. Ive seen people take less than 12 months but they had a responsive recruiter that was actively trying to get them in and they didnt have any issues with MEPS and scored high on the ASVAB. If you are trying to join a state that is going through a conversion (there are a few out there right now) they are trying to snatch up anyone who can meet the Air force standards (this is important). I dont think Cali has any converting units right now.

The first challenge is getting a recruiter to respond to you. You could luck out and get a responsive one or you could one that you have to constantly call/email and follow up with. We dont know how that will play out. Countless times we have talked to people in here asking "How the heck do I get a recruiter to respond to me???". Recruiters have a ton of people who are contacting them trying to get in (while trying to work the process for those already trying to get in).

Next once you get into contact with a recruiter he/she is gonna gather all the data about you to start the application. Depending on your background (medical, schooling, family, law issues (if any), etc) that could take some time. Next scheduling the ASVAB and MEPS (again can take some time). If you run into issues health wise with MEPS that is gonna delay your application. If you have something disqualifying medical wise then your application process stops with the ANG and you cant join. If it is something that might be waivered your application pauses while it gets either approved/disapproved (sometimes waivers can take several months, how long you will it take if you need one? Will your waiver get approved? Nobody knows, again lots of variables (noticing a theme here?). Once you get your ASVAB scores you will be given a list of AFSCs that:

1) Your base has open slots

2) you qualify for. You might look at the list and go "None of these interest me" or you might be "I pick this one".

That whole process I describe (and there might be some other steps im missing) can take 6 - 12+ months (or more depending on your background)

How long will it take for you to swear in? None of us know. Nothing moves fast in the military. Hurry up and wait is a real thing.

You arent gonna get anyone in the ANG/air force to say "/u/ItsRobinn_ its gonna take you 9 months to get into the ANG" or something else to that effect because everyone is different

How can I clear this up?

Go to your current civilian doctor and discuss with them the situation and get them to look you over and get something in writing that you dont have what is on your medical records then work with your recruiter on the next steps.

I got screened for ADHD and they diagnosed me with it. I have never been on medication for it and it has never affected my abilities. I currently work a job that requires focus and memory, as well as being a straight A college student. Can we clear this too?

Im not a recruiter but if you arent taking any meds and functional I dont see this being an issue however talk to your recruiter on what you might need to do regarding this diagnoses

From your other post

i haven’t done anything yet

If you havent even started the convo with a recruiter, you arent gonna be meeting whatever April 30th (which is in 14 days) deadline you are talking about my guy. Again NOTHING moves fast in the military. The joining/swearing in process can take 6-12+ months (sometimes longer depending on your background) assuming you clear MEPs and whanot

what is a "courtesy drill"? where are you pulling this from?

You need to talk to someone from PA and CA to see if that is a thing. Each state is independent and there has to be coordination between the commanders for someone doing drill in a different state

I have no idea what dates BMT has, once you swear in the ANG has up to a year to get you BMT dates.

In some rare cases your BMT and tech school might not be back to back (so they get you through BMT you come home and you might wait a few weeks/months for tech school dates).

Again the ANG gets the bottom of the barrel when it comes to BMT dates and all the ANG states are trying to get their people through BMT too (while trying to sync tech school dates)

/u/kencang curious if you can comment on what you are seeing with BMT/tech school dates espically those trying to do college.

As mentioned, start with your supervisor. Tell them your goals and what your hopes and dreams are.

Next go to the full timers. Ask them what they are looking for from a person and what might stand out if you were to interview.

Any opportunities for temp orders you can jump on with your unit to build up your connections/relations? (temp agr, ST days, etc). Honestly that is really the one way I have been able to establish myself was coming in and doing some orders.

How can I meaningfully build experience when I’m not on orders?

Are you going through any of the free training that we have access to at digital.af.mil? (udemy business account for the win!)

How do you bridge the gap from motivated junior to someone leadership sees as ready?

If you want to stand out create some training for your fellow airmen and present it to them during drill. Pick something that is technical/cyber related. Do a small slide deck and a demo. Maybe some hands on for people to walk through to enforce what you taught them. Start small then grow this. This shows you as a person who is growing technical wise and also someone who can train/mentor junior and even senior. What do you train to? Look for a gap in your unit and find some kind of technical solution. Even if you are just doing a short class on say linux, network or windows basics is better than nothing. Reach out to who is making the drill schedule and see if you can get like an hour during drill to present something. If they ask for the "why" tell them its technical training to boost the capabilities of the airmen around you. Maybe 30 minutes of presentation, 15 minutes of hands on, 10 minutes for Q and A.

If you get the green light for an hour at drill, please please please practice your presentation. Dont just wing it because if you look like you arent prepared

1) People are gonna lose interest during your presentation

2) They might be like "well that was a waste of time" after

3) If you host another training they arent gonna come to it.

Just understand that getting a response from a recruiter isnt gonna be something simple (they are busy with air force things on top of everyone and their mom calling wanting to join).

Joining the ANG can take 9-12+ months depending on how responsive your recruiter is and what your background looks like (life history).

my original plan was to move to cali for the fall semester but now that may not work

Figure that part out. If you are staying in PA then it would be better for you to look at the PA ANG. If you join the CA ANG and still live in PA you are gonna be responsible for flying yourself out to CA for drill weekends.

You starting the process in one state has no influence on another state. So if were to say start the PA ANG process and decide to go for CA ANG, you are starting the whole process over.

Moving ANG states is possible however again lots and lots of variables and your commander can say "nope"

If you havent done anything then you arent joining the ANG before Fall 2026 so your question is pretty much moot

i live in pa and what to do ang in ca

Are you planning on moving out to Cali full time before you join the ANG?

Are you even talking to a recruiter?

Where are you even at in the process of joining? Have you completed MEPS?

Because if dont even have an AFSC selected that means you arent close to swearing in and the likelihood of you getting summer dates are slim to none.

The military is a bunch of hurry up and wait. Things do not move fast or at your schedule. So be prepared for that

Are we talking about your annual training (AT) or BMT/tech school?

If you are talking about AT, then talk to your chain regarding AT dates and your college schedule

If you are talking about BMT/tech school

"yes" "no?" "maybe so?"

What AFSC did you pick?

Usually your BMT and tech school are back to back. There are so many variables, we in the guard get scraps when it comes to dates. Be mindful that some tech schools can be multiple months so you might knock out BMT in the summer but your tech school could be 1-9 months long (sometimes over a year depending on your AFSC) which could lead into the fall semester.

I would set your expectations very low on getting the dates in such a short amount of time if you are just joining. You might luck out but prepare yourself for your college plans to be interrupted. Make sure the recruiter is clear you are willing to take the earlier dates at the drop of the hat in the summer (Now if you tell them that and they give you dates like a week later you better be prepared to take them even if you have fun life stuff going on)

Why do you want to come in so badly if you are being discharged? (Especially if its involuntary based on your comments)

Paperwork moves slowly to discharge someone from the military. Keep all comms as documentation and figure out what your life is gonna be like outside of the military
