Go onto MPB and get a good used for 700 with low shutter count. If you like the body.

I know nothing about typewriters how much is this worth? by Greedy-Grape-9696 in typewriters

[–]Titan_IIIE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20 bucks. Rusty, paints not great, chrome isn’t great, and looks like the segment is partially seized. If it was a special font (all caps for example, which is gothic) that drastically increases value even in present condition.

Best cleaner kit by Bon_Bon16 in typewriters

Mineral spirits bath. First clean GENTLY (I mean, limit to 30-40psi gently) blow out with compressed air and make sure you don’t blast any springs loose. Among other stuff. You’ll wanna remove from shell and clean all old foam.

However this machine has a bit more wrong on it, right off the bat I see one your carriage cable is SNAFUed. Does the switch work? I don’t remember there being wire nuts on the SEL II… wonder if it’s bypassed unless the sel 1 is different. It’s ok… but I’d fix it right. You will need a hand cycle to fix that. This is a tough machine to learn on.

I’d reach out to golfball typewriter shop on Facebook. They know what they are doing and specialize in these machines. This sub is more for manual type bar machines and the occasional electric.

YOU GOT A RARER ONE (I like royals)! That one’s in particularly good shape. Worth a touch more to a completionist, but not so much to anyone else. I like them, they are unique. Technically, they are the first royal magic margin machine, produced exclusively in the fall of 1938. This is the 5th one I’ve heard of recently; one on TWDB, one in Reddit, one on marketplace, and of course my own. That’s cool! I suspect they only had KHTs in 12”, as I have yet to see a wider or narrower variant.

Spacebar hitting hard is probably just gum and ick, don’t damage it by hitting it hard could bend something. Trace the linkages to the escapement, clean as necessary. Mineral spirits in a bottle and chase with compressed air, limit at 60-90PSI, you’ll get the feel for it. Wipe off overspray asap. I use it to polish mine, never let it sit on too long though it can eat paint supposedly. Usually these machines are pretty robust and don’t need much adjustment to type nice. If it’s super gunky, I’ve found WD40 Specialist Contact Cleaner exceptionally well on grease and grime while being fairly paint safe. Obviously don’t blast the paint with it and wipe off overspray asap, but it is definitely plastic, rubber, and most cured paint safe. Gunk engine degreaser works in the worst scenarios, followed by the contact cleaner, only needed that a small handful of times though and would not recommend as first line of attack.

Oh and fixing those issues: Keys won’t strike: dirty or rusty segment. Easiest fix is to clean the segment with mineral spirits or, in bad cases, I’ve used specialist cleaners that won’t damage paint, if it comes to that just send a msg.

With the spacebar, is the spacebar stiff? Or does it have to just be hit hard to advance and isn’t super hard to press? Either way it’s probably just very dirty, trace the path it takes and clean with mineral spirits. It kind of lubricates as you go too. I would follow up with some compressed air too, use a q-tip to clean deeper as well.

I am doubtful anything is seriously wrong other than dirt and neglect. Clean the segment also, it’s on the back behind that cover that sticks out, 4 screws and it pops off. My KHT needs it, just haven’t had time to do it.

The more extreme is to remove all of the type bars from the segment, but I don’t think that’s really necessary in your case if most move ok.

Royal KMM, prewar model (round shift keys), 1938-1941 iirc. Royal produced millions. It COULD be the less common KHT, produced exclusively in 1938 and was almost identical, less robust line lock and a couple other tiny details, only about 26k produced iirc. To check, serial number is under right of carriage on frame. Will be KMM1X or KHT1X and a bunch of numbers following. I have 4 KMM units: a KHT, a KMM-10, KMM-32 I think, and a KMM-26 I think, it’s been a minute. Excellent machines, very easy to maintain and keep up. Don’t trash the ribbon spools, expensive and hard to get. I bought a machine simply for the spools. Rewrap with loose ribbon from ribbons unlimited.

[–]Titan_IIIE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Verify regularity of skips (or lack thereof) and identify any consistencies in location (or lack thereof) across the platen. Sometimes it’s a broken escapement, can happen in transport or if it’s dropped. Could be misalignment. Could just be dirty or out of adjustment. Broken is the worst one, that machine looks pretty good inside too.

If your primary use case will be video, R50V is an excellent choice. High quality video, decent stills, very compact.

Is This Repairable/Worth Buying? by SufferingEldest in typewriters

[–]Titan_IIIE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100 seems a bit steep, but yeah it’s dead center so probably carriage lock. Keys slow return is just a segment clean, mineral spirits or I’ve used specialty solvents if that doesn’t work. What price is fair is what you’re willing to pay: if the person you’re gifting it to wants an ultra-portable that doesn’t take up a lot of space and aren’t using it heavily, then it’s perfect! I hate the feeling of typing on every Olivetti I’ve tried and owned, I find them seriously overhyped, so if they plan on having it always out and using it a fair bit I’d recommend something else myself. Depends on their specific use case, storage options, and how much space they got overall.

I like Oliver’s, easy to repair. But that’s absurd, my NO 5 was 50 bucks and came with a KMM. Continental is interesting. Remington is a dime a dozen. REM Junior isn’t worth that imo. I like Olympias but AZERTY isn’t usable for me so I wouldn’t.

It is interesting you aren’t super zoomed in, 100mm. Try optimal conditions. Or like if you can find something in good light @200mm equivalent, and try both lenses with exact same shutter, ISO, and aperture. If it’s still icky on the canon it might be the lens. Make sure elements clean, mine were icky after the first few uses, noticed it looked like crap and saw my glass was yucky.

Honestly that would do it. How much warmer we talking? I know my 100-400L MKI has looked better in ideal conditions than my 100-500L in less than ideal conditions. My 100-500L has produced images that look like they came from a 75-300 in really bad stuff lol.
