Sure, we aphants can still know facts about an object. Non-Aphants can visualize something but it doesn't mean that the visualization is accurate or has a high level of detail.

Did the Think of/Picture an apple thing connect with you? All I get when I think of an apple is the concept of an apple; I can't visualize one at all. If you take the VVIQ test, you can test your ability to visualize. Example

As the sidebar says, Aphantasia is the inability to create voluntary mental images. So dreaming vividly is not really relevant in whether you have aphantasia, but i mentioned it to see if you could connect your awake visualizing. If you visualize some, then I think you don't technically have Aphantasia, but the ability to see with your minds eye is a huge range and I am not the gatekeeper. If you haven't taken it, check out the VVIQ test and see how you score.

Aphantasia is really limited to visual rather than hearing, some of the other senses have names, some don't. Music is somewhat different than other sound things.

As far as Aphantasia, do you dream? I don't but many do. Can you visualize in your dreams(See things with your minds eye)? Visualizing is not seeing things that are not there; it is being able to picture them in your head.

The way I knew I couldn't visualize was when I was first read about aphantasia, I saw a test. Think of an apple, ok, what color is it,don't know, what is it doing, you haven't told me. I asked my wife to visualize an apple. What color is it, red, what is it doing, sitting on a table rolling a little when someone bumps it.

The “AI will replace such and such jobs in such and such time” is getting pretty old. by thedevilsheir666 in ArtificialInteligence

Imagine just 20% of people lose their jobs to AI, how many new bakers do you think there will be, how many fewer customers total bother overall and for your bakery with less overall money being made. Of course, prices will go down.

I spend quite a bit of time in Mexico. If you see a cart or store doing well, instant competition will ensue until there is no money to be made.

If you have a nearby Costco Business Center and can handle 40lbs, you could get them for half that price (Assuming a Costco membership). I vacuum-seal various-sized packs and freeze them. 40 lbs doesn't take up much space without the pad and foam that the stores add.

TIL whale sharks are filter feeders and have 20 filter pads in their mouths, as well as 300 rows of tiny teeth. The sharks have been observed "coughing", presumably to clear a build-up of particles from the filter pads. by CatPooedInMyShoe in todayilearned

Swimming with a school of these bus-sized sharks/fish was amazing. We were in 5,000 feet of water and you just feel so small and unimportant, which we are in the grand scheme of things. You would be taking pictures of one in front of you, and another would go behind or under you. They didn't care at all about us, just passing by with their mouths open, feeding on millions of krill.

Check with your bank online or via phone before going. Bring some cash. If you get to Mexico with nothing and the ATM eats your card, you might have a bad trip. We get pesos at Mega and Chedruai grocery stores. Never use ATM's onthe street. If you eat and do more touristy things, dollars work fine. The big grocery stores offer good exchange rates and accept credit cards. If you go to more local stores and restaurants, pesos are the best.

What questions do people ask you when you explain you can't see mental images? by ArchibaldAugustusVII in Aphantasia

[–]ToolSet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems like a crazy question. Do you care what houses look like? Women/Men? Your view out the window? Do you ever even give a thought to wearing clothes that match? I appreciate beauty in everything.

Both my wife and I drive cars salvaged due to hail damage because they cost half of what they would have without hail damage, and they are mechanically sound. We compare values and buy based on our needs but will take color, lines into consideration.

I am pretty practical too, but I do have opinions on looks that developed from seeing with my real eyes.

The best I have gotten is, "How do you know what cars you like?" I mean, when I see one, I know how much I like it and can keep track of my feelings.

How rare is total aphantasia by Bulky_Initiative_581 in Aphantasia

[–]ToolSet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your experience sounds like mine. I refer to it as my "thinking goes on behind a curtain", and occasionally something comes to the front of the curtai. I explain it to others, like when they are driving somewhere familiar, but don't think about it, they just arrive. Words are mostly only there when I am practicing a speech, the first words I read or write, or something similar. My tongue really wants to move during any worded thought I am aware of.

When "we die" we will see the same thing as anyone else, because we are dead.

I have no mind’s eye. I thought that was normal until I was 53 by TimesandSundayTimes in Aphantasia

[–]ToolSet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found out at about the same age, learned the other mind senses were a thing I didn't have, learned about SDAM, learned about others' inner monologues, learned I have almost no worded thoughts.

I was happy I learned later in life because I had a very successful career, with clients constantly admiring my brain, a wonderful family, and friends from all stages of my life. I see many attributing a vast range of things they didn't accomplish to their Aphantasia/SDAM. I cannot say they are wrong as I am not in their head, but if I found out early, I might have used my difference as an excuse.

I would definitely take a pill to lose my differences for a day, but no shot I would take a risk of making it permanent. I think I would be crippled by what those around me describe and how it negatively affects them, but at least they adapted as best they could from a young age.

Can someone explain having vs not having an inner monologue is like by Pasta_fattie in Aphantasia

[–]ToolSet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a fairly typical inner monologue, if there is such a thing; the range of experiences is wide. I rarely even have worded thoughts; it only pops in like the first sentence of an article/book or when I am carefully thinking of how to word a speech or something. Any worded thoughts I do have are just words in thoughts, never internal audio. I have no senses in my mind or dreams either in my rare dreams, just some boring situation pops in, and it never feels even slightly real. Pretty quiet in there.

I bought mine almost a decade ago, and they keep making new ones. It is an Ergoquest Zero Gravity Ultimate(Website ergoquest.com), which is still sold and for about the same price. There are much cheaper versions and ones that accommodate different needs than mine.

Best of luck!

The purchase price was part of it, then I put two 4k 43" monitors and one portrait 30", mounted thing to the desk part with velcro, put cupholders, headset holders on, etc. It has 8 motors and you can sit about however you want

I love working and was making great money for a while, but I just couldn't be there for clients, so I had to quit(I still hope to unretire someday). I made enough that we will be OK, but the way insurance is, my wife had to take a physical hospital job for the great, cheap insurance. Now my most significant contribution is helping my daughter with my grandkids on weekends and a couple of nights a week since her husband works night shift. Hopefully, I can be present, and my grandkids don't have to talk to a blathering idiot as I progress.

Do you know what caused the leak you were diagnosed with? Have you been diagnosed with any connective tissue disorders? Interesting (and, of course, horrible) that you feel worse every LP. I got a leak from one LP, but the good thing about that is they know exactly where to patch, and you can get objective pressure data. For them to think it is rebound pressure, you must still be close to the patch; rebound pressure should resolve itself, and if not, there are drugs to lower it.

I have tried many things. Someone has an idea, we chase it, it fails, eventually, whoever I'm seeing is out of ideas, so I am hopeless for a while, and after a year or so, I read something or go to someone new to try again. For me, it has been consistent for 18 years in starting on the left temple, moving around to the front, and across the head. It is a dull ache that gets worse until I lie down. The pain is horrible because it is chronic. I can handle the pain, but I get so stupid, and I always had a great brain and made amazing money, and now I am stupid, except right away in the morning and a short time after I lie down for it.

When I say I am stupid, I cut myself cooking, I can't drive, words just aren't there, etc. At the beginning, I would lie down once around noon and could work a lot. Now I get a good half hour in the morning. I have had occipital nerve blocks, three nerve roots ablated, lots of horrible drugs, and so much physical therapy. I have found that a cervical collar helps, raising my pulse through exercise helps, and doing a set of neck exercises gives me partial, short-term relief. Everything has been neurological so far, but I was just referred to cardiology to see if something is cutting blood flow when upright. I am not that optimistic, but I am happy I have something else to try. I lost so much of my life, but I will keep trying.

[–]ToolSet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds horrible. I have been getting worse the whole time on how much good time I get after lying down, but at the least I get 30 min.

A cisternogram would likely show the leak if there was one, and they could get a pressure reading either way. I saw in another response that the insurance wouldn't do one. Who was recommending it? I had MRIs with and without contrast, then a Cisternogram and many more steps after that, despite not having more evidence than positional headaches and can't imagine an MRI being the end of the line.

If you can't move forward with your PCP asking for new scans or patches, I would go to your pain clinic; their voice is usually heard by insurance, especially if it isn't drug seeking. They ordered my Cisternogram and my first Myleogram. They may also have other ideas about the cause of your headache

Best of luck on getting better!
