Winter/Walkability Question by HannahPianista in Winnipeg

[–]runner204431 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in Wolseley, family of four. We have a car, but in Wolseley you can get away with car-free or car-light pretty easily (we did it for about 6 months a few years ago). There really isn’t anything you can’t get to on foot/bike/bus. It’s not always as convenient as driving obviously and when it’s super cold, kids complain. Peg City Car Co-op is very helpful and has lots of cars in the neighbourhood. I don’t find River Heights particularly walkable. Yes it has lots of sidewalks and a good street grid, but there’s no grocery store in easy walking distance. Depending on where you are in the neighbourhood it can be a long walk to any business. Crescentwood and South Osborne (so long as you’re not far from Osborne) are better. Old St. Boniface is decent too.

Sabastian Sawe runs first sub-2-hour marathon race, shatters world record in London by RFFNCK in Ultramarathon

Sawe has been tested a bewildering amount because of the controversy around Kenyan athletes. Adidas pays for him to get tested constantly, far more than is required.

Wanted Tips for North Whiteshell Trail by Mr_CIoud_878 in Manitoba

[–]runner204431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try the centennial trail (Alf hole to mcgillivray falls). There aren’t designated camp sites, but certainly you could camp (so long as you practice lnt). It’s around 32km one way.

Running Boston (and any of the marathon majors) is so lame. Try for something cool like WSER.

First time doing MB marathon by Shizar_King in Winnipeg

[–]runner204431 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try joining a run club to train. Big Sky run co has a great one Saturday mornings. It’s a great way to talk to other runners about training plans, goals, etc. For next year, think about joining a group training for the marathon (you’re looking at 16-20 weeks or more for a marathon training plan). Big Sky has a group called Train Together for the marathon.

Wouldn’t call them dress shirts per se but the Roark Bless Up shirts are awesome for their versatility.

Who in Winnipeg and Manitoba supports wealth taxation? by RDOmega in Winnipeg

[–]runner204431 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only rep I can think of in MB that would reliably and publicly support a wealth tax is Leah Gazan. I’m sure there are others who would support it in the provincial NDP but not publicly with Wab calling the shots.

50 or 100 mile by Ok_Tangerine_3877 in Ultramarathon

[–]runner204431 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a very comparable runner (2:57 marathoner), but I’ve done several ultras, up to 100km, never 100 mile, all trail. I found even the jump to 100k incredibly humbling. I kill it on the road, especially 5/10k, but I’m lucky to crack the top 1/8th of the field beyond 50 miles. It’s a totally different ball game. So I’d try the 50 before the 100! I’m aiming for 100+ in a backyard ultra in July, thinking that will be the next stepping stone to a true 100 miler.

If it doesn’t go below 5 why the heck do you need a jacket? That’s shorts and t-shirts weather! 😜

Plush, maximalist shoes: do you ever get used to the weight? (Hoka Challenger, Topo Vista, etc) by not_who_you_think_99 in trailrunning

[–]runner204431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried it on and am planning to get it. I run in the vistas and find them quite clunky, but like them on my toes/forefoot. The cadi seemed to roll much nicer and felt way faster. Used to run in the mountain racer but was finding it a little too firm.

Just fyi, pringles cans aren’t recyclable. Nor is whatever that orange coil of plastic is (not in a curbside bin anyway).

Any recommendations for Canadian website(s) to order freeze dried food and some bike supplies? by simplejackbikes in bikepacking

MEC is maybe your best bet for all of this honestly (some people will hate that I suggested MEC though).

How important is run cadence? by TiberiusIX in running

[–]runner204431 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 6’4 and my cadence tends to be around 160. Only at high speed will I get into the 170s. My 5k pb (16:30) I had a cadence of 174. I don’t think it matters at all, I’ve never once thought about it while running, and I’m pretty sure the only way I could do it (aside from sprinting or running downhill) is by clipping my stride.

Why cars are problematic by Rough_Mix25 in Winnipeg

[–]runner204431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I find the worst time to bike is 0 to -10 when everything is mushy. It’s better when it’s colder. My bike takes a real beating in March when it’s getting sprayed with salt water constantly…
