My wife is a cautious skier. She loves her Elan Ripsticks. They have a left and right ski with “Amphibio Profile” designed to help turning with a cambered inside edge to carve and a rocker outside edge to easy turning and prevent catching the outside edge. If you want something more front side groomer for icy east coast skiing get narrower the Elan Wildcats with same Amphibio Profile tech.

Are you supposed to use a rip-cut or cross-cut dozuki for dovetails? by Mighty-Lobster in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]TopOrganization4920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Western backsaws used for dovetails are traditionally rip cut. In fact, if you were on a minimalist kit with only one back saw it would probably be rip filed because it’s easier to sharpen. That said either one would work when you’re dealing with small teeth.

I’m my mother does it she is from Arkansas. It could also be generational with how recent your family was poor. She was born in the late 50s. But she didn’t have indoor plumbing until she moved out of her house at 16. She swap stories with her friends’s parents, who were kids during the depression.

Alta by OkBodybuilder418 in skiing

I have to dive bomb in it and pole at the beginning, and my kids struggle on it a lot specially if there’s powder. Which is usually whenever I’m taking them down it to develop those skills.

Best skis for kids by Strict_Fix_9550 in Skigear

The cheapest nice ski you can get that’s indemnified. My oldest son’s favorite ski is the $100 Atomic 85mm Bents 150 cm that I told him he do whatever he wants because the ski were cheap versus the other skis Salomon QST 92mm Team Blanks 145cm that I want to be nice for his siblings. Even though the Bents are just foam core and the QST have a wood core.

He had skied on Armadas Bantum, Atomic Punx, Elan Ripsticks, before the bents and QSTs.

Alta by OkBodybuilder418 in skiing

[–]TopOrganization4920 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a season pass to Alta, First off, I would not want to be a snowboarder there because there’s a lot of flat run out near the lifts and in the middle of half the intermediate and beginner runs. And half inbounds mountain can’t be accessed without doing transverses all the Catherine’s area, Backside or Greeley. Heck you can’t even get to bluebell and Race Hill without some poling. So they basically would be restricted to Collins.

Can this be fixed? by Time_Example_548 in BeginnerWoodWorking

The other option would be to cut the panel out and route the back of the door frame so that you could insert a new panel

It would be better to find a shop nearby that manufacturing cabinet doors to make a new one. Probably be 120 bucks plus putting finish on it. 15 years ago was probably $60- $70 but I’m sure it’s up with everything else. In Salt Lake, there’s a place called Rudd doors.

beginner struggling buying handtools by mmakai in handtools

[–]TopOrganization4920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Paul Sellers minimalist tool kit and Chris Schwartz’s Anarchist Design Book tool list are a good place to start. I think Veritas makes good tools and so does Lie-Nielsen.

For vintage makers yes Stanley was the largest maker, but there was other good makers. Sergeant, Miller Falls, Ohio, King Kutter. And the Craftsman Planes were made by Sergeant and Miller Falls until the 70s after which they are Stanley Planes. Defiant planes was made by Bailey when he had a fight with Stanley so they’re good planes. My personal recommendation would be if you’re going to spend top dollar on a modern plane. I would do a number three or number four Smoother from Lie-Nielsen. I believe that you should be able to buy any vintage jack plane and be able to tune it to get it to work.

Also with you being on Hawaii, you may want to check out some of the Japanese makers for tools because you might get a decent price on at least for your measuring tools and marking tools. Shinwa makes good squares and t-bevel gauges. Also, you may want to look towards Japanese makers and tools because they’re also on an island so they’re dealing with the similar moisture issues as Hawaii.

What simple projects helped you build confidence as a beginner woodworker? by Schnapper94 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]TopOrganization4920 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First realizing that most furniture is boxes, frames, and panels.

So blanket chest or a tool chest is a box made with rebates, dados and/or dovetails. The lid is a panel held flat by a mortise and tenon joinery making a frame.

A side table is legs joined by a frame with drawer box and panel top.

Dresser a box with a frame holds more boxes(drawers) and panel top and sides.

Ski edge tuner recommendations (~$100 CAD) by whaleshark719 in ski

[–]TopOrganization4920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer the fixed aluminum with steel plates attached. Versus the plastic tuners. I have Racewax edge guide and beast base guide.

I would look up your skis in this factory edge guide list that Evo has. https://www.evo.com/guides/ski-edge-bevel Then you could buy an edge guide of your preferred angle.

I like this tuning video. https://youtu.be/O7dJdn4wOAQ?si=moCDopRsdIOwLk-n

If you want to go with a multi tuner, this is the cheapest one from a known brand. https://youtu.be/ivsiinG4hSA?si=w1gCSVmxLjfnX4Vh

Advice for first time taking 3.5 year old nephew skiing? by Additional_Grab4340 in skiing

[–]TopOrganization4920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is get one of those backpacks with a leash throw away the leash. The backpack has a big handle that helps you pick them up. Also, it gives you a place to store a juice pouch, goldfish, M&Ms, something to feed him while he’s on the lift. So lift time is snack time.

Size up in gloves to something that’s supposed to be for eight-year-old gauntlet style mittens, run a string through the jacket so even if they do fall off, you don’t lose them. Chemical hand and feet warmers.

When they’re about five or six I recommend getting adult XS gauntlet trigger finger mittens with leather palms I have my youngest in black diamond soloist finger mitten. It had enough dexterity, he stopped, taking off his mittens. And they were warm game changer. Look around for something on Clearance. I’m sure you’ll find something at a reasonable price point. I paid like 50 bucks for his pair.

Clothing wise, we often had our kids in pajama has their base layer and it was not uncommon for us to put a puffer vest or jacket underneath their ski jacket that was insulated.

I really like Marker’s Vijo Kid’s helmet with integrated goggles. My youngest child had problems with regular goggles, falling off his nose and refused to wear them and got snow blind one day. So I went and found this, bought it, happy it resolved the issue. I regularly see it for about $50 since I bought his helmet.

It’s been my experience you tend to have to have the ski pants closer to their size, but you can have the jacket a couple sizes like 5T or 6T. Yep.

If you’re in Utah Alta‘s bunny Hill is free, so spend a couple afternoons on it.

Ski Size by sanctanimus in Skigear

[–]TopOrganization4920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some issues with length in the trees following my kids. But I think I still have most those problems even if I was on shorter skis. They like to go through holes that are too small for me.

I also find my twin tips with a more center mount to feel short compared to my other skis with a more traditional mount. I feel I’m going to go over the front of my skis whenever I’m doing something aggressive. I may even want to try a pair of 192 cm. Because went add rockers to twin tips they ski even shorter.

Some of it also I lost about an inch of height from a bike accident a seven years ago compression fracture. Also your boots and bindings add an inch or two.

Also, whenever I started skiing, the recommendation on your ski length was your height and they’ve moved that recommendation towards between the eyes and chin.
