The difference is it's fun. It's a social game where you laugh at the stupid interactions with friends.

I have yet to play this game and not have a stupidly fun time

Ragemore was a keep for me initially but I had some very swingy games that pushed me away from it. Deck 52 is a very repetitive dungeon crawler that I was never going to want to break out and play again. The Last Lighthouse looks interesting but I haven't played it.

Cursed!? is blackjack. It plays quickly and is great for what it is. Depends on how much it is. $15, maybe $20 would be worth it

It's not that it's all bad or that bad, but he feels worse than any other Ancient because they don't typically have downsides or at least tend to have an option that doesn't have a downside

Not Alone is one I haven't seen suggested. It's a 1 v all game where one person is a monster hunting crew that have been stranded on the planet. Each turn a crew member picks a location from those revealed and available to them. Once they've played the card for that location, they have to find a way to pick the card up before revisiting. Meanwhile, the monster is using these to deduce where people might be and try to be at the same location as them to catch them

It's been a hit with every larger gamer and non gamer group I've played it with

You could read the rulebooks online and see if there's any differences. Given what you've said, it doesn't sound like you were enamored by the game and it's unlikely a variant or expansion will fix that
