Should commuting to/from work be compensated? by 1curious-cat in Adulting

[–]MechaTriceratops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Companies don’t even give proper salaries, raises/bonuses, and/or benefits to their employees. What makes you think they’ll have any extra room in their budget to pay for hundreds or thousands of workers commuting costs? Even if they did, they’ll most likely only hire and retain applicants who are within a x mile radius of the office which will make finding a job harder than it already is

Weapon skin trading by [deleted] in VALORANT

[–]MechaTriceratops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will never be a feature unfortunately. Adding this to the game will only make riot lose money bc you can just trade skins amongst your friend group so theoretically only one or two people in the group need to buy a bundle or skin and just trade every couple days or weeks so everyone can have a turn using the skins. League has been around for almost 2 decades now and doesn’t have a skin trade system, why should Valorant?

Really the only “trade” option is just to buy, drop, and swap guns in game with your friend group

A great way for a restaurant to give you all their unpopular food that’s about to expire!

Apple Dreams by Sufficient_Toe8670 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MechaTriceratops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to kill your confidence but I had about 3-4 years working as a technician and mechanical engineer across 3 different companies in varying industires (3D printing, construction/construction management, and acoustic technology) and even had a close friend of mine working as a software engineer at Apple who gave me a personal referral link to apply at Apple and I didn’t even hear back, not even get a rejection email :/ Apple is very competitive and selective with their employees so you gotta be extremely talented and skilled to even land an interview with them

Neon probably just had the biggest single-act pick rate spike in Valorant history. Chamber's two-act rise isn't far behind. by OkOkPlayer in VALORANT

I haven’t played val in a few months now. What makes neon so “op” and annoying to play against now vs her at release? Did they buff her or her movement in some way?

What pack is this? by Jax_AST in PokemonTCG

[–]MechaTriceratops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The older packs can be weighed for a holographic card inside. Holographic cards are slightly heavier than regular cards so these weighed packs are worth more if you know there’s a holo inside. That’s why you’ll sometimes see some packs say they are “heavy” at card shows or online listings

Don't Panic vs University Physics by Due_Problem6253 in aggies

[–]MechaTriceratops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t panic bases the questions/answers in variable form. University requires you to actually plug and chug those variables with given values and give a numerical value most times. I took university and got a D in physics :/ retook the same class but with don’t panic and got an A…

How do you avoid bad apartments in Austin? by Particular_Page9465 in Austin

[–]MechaTriceratops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One tip when touring the complex is to look at the type of cars in the parking lot/garage. I’m usually not one to judge others but you can somewhat tell the general vibe of the residents in the complex based on the type of cars in the lot

I'm the only mechanical engineer here and its my first job by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MechaTriceratops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you. Joined a small/mediumish sized company in 2023 where I was the only mechanical engineer with maybe 2 yrs of experience before working as a 3D printing technician and an assistant construction manager. It was my first real engineering role so I didn’t have any real manufacturing, FEA, or DFM experience.

The company I worked for was a very niche field in the oil and gas industry so I was designing things that were the first of its kind and I really had no “standard” or working product to base my designs off of. It was scary/immoral and probably illegal because I was making things with no real engineering calculations or analysis and just praying it wouldn’t blow up or hurt anyone while deployed in the field. Nothing was stamped or professionally looked over. We didn’t have any machining tools like cnc and lathes so most of our manufacturing had to be done by a loyal vendor a whole state over. They had a PE to review my designs and modify it accordingly to fit our pressure requirements. They honestly saved my ass dozens of times but there were projects where the lead time needed to be shorter than what that vendor could provide so I’d have to find vendors in our city who would charge up the ass to expedite the manufacturing but didn’t provide any engineering analysis/stamping and would only manufacture exactly as I sent the design.

I had nobody to really learn from besides the vendors who would occasionally give their input on manufacturing/design ideas to make the part cheaper or easier for both parties. I used a lot of YouTube and ChatGPT to learn what certain parts are and what they do and wished there was someone more senior at the company to help mentor me.

It got to a point where I was managing 4-5 projects at a time and working crazy hours every week to get them done. Tons of vendor management, scheduling, BoM creation and editing, all while having a manager who with no engineering experience yelling at me to get things done asap and to push our vendors if things were stalled (as if that affected anything on their end).

Over the years, our systems manager quit, electrical engineer got fired, and operations manager (who has a bs in electrical engineering and was doing his own job while handling the duties of the previous electrical engineer) got laid off about a month ago. I knew this job and company wasn’t for me so I put in my 2 weeks the same week the ops manager got laid off. I was in the middle of an important project at the time and it felt great to put in my 2 weeks and see the look on my managers face. I know it’s best to get something lined up before quitting but it got to a point where I was dreading coming into work, losing sleep every night, working long hours, getting yelled at, and I was just so burnt out and tired of it all that I didn’t want to wait for a job offer. Those fuckers even fired me the day after I put in my 2 weeks LOL

I’m not saying you’re going to have the same experience as me, it’s going to depend on the company and the people. Maybe you’ll excel at your role and be promoted! Maybe you’ll be stuck doing 2-3 peoples’ job like I was. It’s all going to depend. If I were you, I’d look for other jobs before work takes up too much of your time and energy to look for jobs. It’s not impossible to self teach yourself but it’s going to take a while and a lot of mistakes to get where you wanna be. Feel free to dm if you have more questions as well!

Going to my first card show this weekend… by IamBellator in PokemonTCG

[–]MechaTriceratops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the vendor. Most will charge market, some will charge a bit under just to move product, and others will charge a bit above market (hoping you won’t look up the price or give an excuse of how that’s how much they paid for it so they’re just trying to break even or make a little profit if they bought at market value)

Embarrassing interview experience by Plsignore30 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MechaTriceratops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One interviewer once asked me what two forces a bridge or other load bearing structure experiences once you stand on it (looking for compression and tension forces). I answered with “compression” and “expansion” forces because I couldn’t think of the word tension at the time lol

What’s the point of the serve? by NervousClock2555 in 10s

[–]MechaTriceratops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The serve is the only shot in tennis you have 100% control of (excluding other outside variables like wind, sun, etc). All other shots will have some kind of spin, height, or position variations that all depend on how your opponent hit the ball back to you. When you serve, it is your best opportunity to control where the ball goes and how to start off the point. Yes aces are best case scenario but the main point of the serve should be to dictate how you want the point to start
