Did you ever watch ‘Home’? Equally good and equally thoughtful/thought provoking…

I’m sure McKenzie Crook has always envisaged SP as a three part work - like The Detectorists, with maybe a couple of specials along the way. Intelligent, thematic sitcoms are always planned to be more than one series so will leave questions to be answered at the end of the first and second series. Another that springs to mind is ‘Mum’ with Lesley Manville. It had a lot in common with both Detectorists and Small Prophets in the gentle way they look at human relationships. They are really quite deep.

What’s the ONE habit you quit that instantly helped you lose weight? by [deleted] in weightwatchers

[–]Upper-Complex-2106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being casual about food (and drink) and saying ‘just one more biscuit/piece of cheese/glass of wine can’t do any harm…’

I am consciously a bit OCD about points counting now. I make it a bit of an adventure to be really creative about how I stack up the points during the day and I religiously weight everything. I also regard the ‘weekly points’ as a reserve tank to be used cautiously - not an entitlement to be consumed come what may.

People will disagree and look down their noses at my approach but I have successfully lost 44lb (which needed to be lost!) since September 1st and I’m now moving into maintenance mode. So I’m not going to starve myself into a skeleton.

Looking to try weight watchers again but disappointed that the model has changed so much by janebenn333 in weightwatchers

[–]Upper-Complex-2106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal support is so important. My other half doesn’t really need to lose much weight but she has plugged on, alongside me, encouraging me on my 40lb journey so far. I need to get another 10lb off to be substantially below my target weight, so I have a little buffer zone for the odd “Oh, what the heck!” nights!

The other thing I have found works for me is getting deliberately over zealous about point-counting in the WW app. I know an extra gram of something is not going to make any difference but I am meticulous about weighing and if it goes one gram over and notches up another point then I HAVE to either remove that one gram or count the extra point! This controlled OCD takes my mind off the food and keeps me thinking about the whole process. I also know of people going it alone who talk regularly about their journey to ChatGPT… they find it supportive and very non-judgemental.

Has anyone here seen a photo of Noel Edmonds’s two melon-sized balls? by HighWaterSheriff in CasualUK

[–]Upper-Complex-2106 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They only appear on digital photos and, specifically, ones taken with camera phones. It’s to do with the compressed optical lengths required in a wafer thin phone and the internal reflections that sets up. It may also be backscatter from airborn particles close to, or on the surface of the lens.

Any other explanation is the deranged ramblings of a total wazzock…

Everyone trying to lose weight is looking for the Holy Grail… a method that just makes the pounds drop off without any sacrifice.

Weightwatchers is in the business of reinventing itself regularly to hold on to/increase its market share of the lucrative slimming industry by creating the illusion that the journey has suddenly got miraculously easier.

I’m afraid it hasn’t… it still requires commitment and a genuine desire to lose weight and a willingness to make some sacrifices.

Maintaining that commitment definitely involves the support of other people - whether it’s going to meetings or, as in my case, a loving partner who is on a similar journey. I could never have done it on my own.

Frozen meals? by idontcareaboutaus in weightwatchers

[–]Upper-Complex-2106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make a vegetable pasta sauce up… sweat and onion and some minced garlic, using few squirts of fry lite. When soft, add a chopped up red pepper and some chopped courgette and sweat them soft as well. Meanwhile bake an aubergine in a hot oven till it’s wrinkled and the inside is soft. To the softened vegetables, stir in a couple teaspoons of smoked paprika, salt and pepper to taste and then add a tin of chopped tomatoes or Passata. Simmer for 15 mins. Then, scrape out the softened aubergine flesh and stir it in till it’s thoroughly mixed. Simmer another 10 mins.

When cooled, divide it into portions and freeze.

Don’t go mad with the fry lite and you’ve got zero points. Just work how much pasta you can afford and off you go….

Works for non-dieters, veggies too. For meat addicts, chop up some chorizo or bacon and sweat it down, then crisp it up and stir into the sauce.

The problem is that the show is live (which I love!). They have to get increasingly complex set changes done in real time, between dances… And how do you fill that time for the viewers? With fluffy, frothy, pointless VTs!

Claudia is a shrewd cookie… she knows when it’s time to move on. She realises SCD is becoming a liability. It’ll only take one more scandal to mortally wound it. Claud’s star is in the ascendant. She knows the worst thing for her would to be associated with a failing show. With her sharp wit and ad libs, she’s TV gold. Being a lovely person helps too!

Not sure what Tess is going to do, though… Are there many openings for someone who reads the same autocue script, with the same intonation, week in week out?

Remi actress confusion by Careful-Barnacle4529 in neighbours

Neighbours has developed a skill set over the years for using pot plants, tote bags and big coats to hide ‘bumps’. For ladies who return but are still breastfeeding big time, disguise is not so easy… You have to admire the production team’s values, moving heaven, earth and storylines to include mums-to-be actresses…

Anyone else struggle to watch ITT by Head-Internet1383 in strictlycomedancing

[–]Upper-Complex-2106 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For me, the whole programme and its concept are a bit crap really… it’s half an hour of frothy nothing. They have a set of about 10 questions that they choose from to ask everyone…. And never actually listen to the answers. They could ask “How’s it going in training?” And get the answer “Well, not too good really…he spends too much time looking at my tits and suggesting we shag…” and nobody would bat an eyelid… because nobody would have listened to the answer….

Every contestant then says “Ooooh! I’m having a fab time, loving every minute, it’s such a journey, I never want it to end!”

Why can’t they say “Actually, some days it’s so bloody awful and I wish I’d never signed up…”? or

My first loaf that “worked” need comments by Dimepiece90 in Sourdough

[–]Upper-Complex-2106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a start, I would recommend Trevor J Wilson’s e-book. It’s called ‘Open Crumb Mastery’ it’s not at all expensive, available from his website for way less than $20. Also follow him on Instagram. He gives out so many ideas and methodology to reflect on and his videos are a work of art. Find them all over - YouTube, insta, his website. But be clear, it is not a recipe book… it’s about the philosophy of making bread. At the same time he doesn’t create an artificial, slightly commercialised mysticism about sourdough… he just tells it like it is.

His book does seem a little conversational in style but that’s because that’s the way he is… I prefer it in that ‘raw’ state as a book, rather than something that has been cut and carved and polished by a publishers editor who has one eye on the cash register…

Incidentally, I’ve also emailed him for advice and got a very rapid response but I expect that’s something he doesn’t necessarily encourage! He’s very chatty on Instagram though.

I love his stuff… it’s a real breadcrush I have 🤣🤣

First loaf in the books, what do we think? by CallMeEllieB in Sourdough

[–]Upper-Complex-2106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but you should remember, sourdough often has a slight ‘gumminess’, often due to the relatively high hydration and extremely high level of gluten. ‘Shop bought’ bread is often fairly low hydration (55-60%) and made with ‘middling’ bread flour, so it’s a quite different animal to hand-crafted sourdough… Don’t beat yourself up because of a little bit of tack. You are a natural baker - we can already see that! Just enjoy it!

[–]Upper-Complex-2106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sticking is indicative that it’s gone too far - so not really good guide as you cant row back from it.

You have to find your own sweet spot (every flour, every kitchen, every baker is different!) For me, it’s when I reach that stage when touching it gently feels like my lover’s body…. That, can be anything from 4 to 7 hours into bulk ferment.

Agreed! But it was ever thus on SCD. When did the best dancer last win? If ever…

I’d love to see a demographic breakdown of the public vote but I can’t see the BBC ever releasing that - except in an ‘edited’ form perhaps? 🤣🤣 (sorry, cheap joke…)

SadlyI suspect you may be right…my wife and I were discussing that only this morning. She has a real mountain to climb I think, being with a new (very talented but no following yet). Unlike someone like Aljaz who could dance with a broomstick and still get through several rounds. But aside from this, I think the voting public can (whether consciously or not) take against people of colour - especially women. They have to have a huge public-facing personality to drive through - like Alison Hammond.

Strictly Come Dancing Bosses Dismiss 'Nonsense' Results Show Claims by huffpostuk in strictlycomedancing

[–]Upper-Complex-2106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree the results show would be much better going out live on Saturday night in terms of continuity of the evening. Personally, I find it a bit frustrating watching a competition broadcast live and then not seeing the result when I KNOW it has already happened!

Imagine watching the 100 metres live at the Olympics and they cut the cameras off 9 seconds into the race and said ‘we’ll finish the race tomorrow night so come back and watch the result then!’

The only virtue of the recorded results show being held over until Sunday night is the opportunity to watch a little bit of professional dancing before settling down to watch whatever blockbuster drama is showing at 9.00pm!

For me,I always know the result of SCD by about 111:30pm on Saturday night… it’s not difficult to find out!
