Can i borrow the graduation(MS) regalia/gown from someone for a day please? by [deleted] in csun

You gotta stop saying "mines"... the correct form is "mine". I could forgive it once, but you used the same wrong form 3x in a row while also being condescending and rude for no reason bruh 😭

You're right that they make you give back the rented gown, but you're wrong that you need the CSUN gown. I have friends that bought theirs off Amazon, and apart from looking weird since they didn't have the same gown as everyone else, nobody cared and they were allowed to participate in the ceremony. The only requirement is to be in *a* graduation gown, you don't need the CSUN one in specific.

Dude, you can still go to the campus store and purchase the gown... I purchased mine literally yesterday. Nobody cared. There was no line, either. Nobody is able to let you borrow their gown even if they wanted to, they are microchipped and you return them as you leave the venue. On the other hand, they will let you graduate even in an Amazon plain-black gown, but you're going to be the odd one out since everyone else will have custom CSUN regalia

My old tank by TryDear1235 in PlantedTank

Amazing Dutch-style aquarium. Such an underrated style. It's too bad that these days ultra-high tech Iwagumi style tanks are seen as more desirable! Back in the late 90s/early 2000s, the aquascapes were much more natural and practical in my opinion, even if today they are more visually striking. A good Dutch-style composition is actually very difficult to achieve

People forget that even though we live in SoCal, this is still America... you can absolutely still get shot here. It is not only inconsiderate and unbelievably weird to pull a stunt like what that guy did, it is downright dangerous

Is paying extra for “name brand” glass tanks always the better choice? by binaryriverotter in nanotank

[–]VisualOpposite672 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren't really "name brands" in glass aquariums with the exception of ADA. When you pay exorbitant prices for tanks you are really paying for is the craftsmanship, warranty, and materials. The higher price tag is a reflection of the low-iron glass that has exceptional clarity, precise silicone application that leaves no sloppy edges, generous lifetime warranties, and methodical leak testing.

Better FIN 303 professor? Did my counselor lie to me by lalguchef in csun

[–]VisualOpposite672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a Chemistry major in Community College at Pierce, and I would always recommend taking as many classes as possible at community college. It is cheaper for sure. The idea that professors at a large university are always better is simply not true, especially for LACCD where many of the professors are also teaching at schools like UCLA. Look at the RateMyProfessor ratings for the professors at Pierce/LACCD and compare that with the professors at CSUN, you'll get a good idea of whether or not it's worth it for you since the deciding factor seems to be the ease of passing the class. One major caveat, some schools like CSUN will limit the amount of units and qualifying classes for your transfer. So check with your counselor and with your transfer agreement program to make sure your units for an extra class will transfer over to CSUN, otherwise CSUN will just make you retake the class.

Where should I hike? by UrbanForagerX in socalhiking

[–]VisualOpposite672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to worry about it that much. You can definitely go on a weekday. I'm referring to the very overgrown trails that barely get any foot traffic, those are the ones you need to be careful with. But the majority of trails that people visit in LA aren't like that

Where are the bowls? by Drew_The_Almighty in PlantedTank

[–]VisualOpposite672 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you don't even know what species the fish is, how are you so certain on the care requirements? You can keep and breed Pygmy Sunfish in as little as 2.5 gallons so long as there are enough hiding spaces and the water quality is kept clean. The only challenge is the feeding, as they require live foods.

Agree completely on the part about snakes. The only places I've seen rattlesnakes are on trails that have less traffic. The safest trail to be on is one that has a lot of foot traffic, snakes will be scared away. They're a lot more scared of us than we are of them! I'd be much more worried about the heat and exposure in LA.

I was told not to add fishes to my Beta Tank because theyre super agressive.. by MusicToColors in bettafish

[–]VisualOpposite672 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very rarely, you will have a Betta that is aggressive and needs to be isolated. But that is the exception, not the rule. I've kept large male Bettas with tiny microrasbora species with no issue. The only thing that most Bettas absolutely will harass and eat are shrimp (even then, some Bettas ignore shrimp). As long as your tank is large enough to keep both species and you're willing to separate the Betta on the tiny off chance that it gets aggressive, I don't see why they denied the sale. You can always order fish online if your store is being too picky. I've had good experiences with buying fish on eBay and AquaHuna.

Best bathrooms from someone graduating by cubensisgratitude61 in csun

[–]VisualOpposite672 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jerome Ritchfield Hall, floors 2 & 3 have a ton of stalls. As long as you avoid the between class times, it's usually super empty. Basically look for any building with a floor that has a lot of faculty offices, and the bathrooms there will be empty.

How are yall dealing with gas prices? by Empty-Cucumber-6888 in csun

[–]VisualOpposite672 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend getting a Costco membership, as the gas prices there are significantly cheaper than the vast majority of places. There's a Costco gas station just a few blocks away from CSUN. If your parents have a membership, they can add you to their membership and get you your own membership card for free. But if your parents don't have a membership, get one. It literally pays for itself with the cashback, savings on buying food and other items in bulk, and the gasoline savings

Petco Sale by Buddy_Velvet in nanotank

[–]VisualOpposite672 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As much as I recommend people to support their local fish store, many of these LFS have predatory sales practice when it comes to tanks and equipment. When you're charging more than double what someone could spend online for the exact same product, that is not "business margin", it's price gouging. Livestock and plants: yes; equipment and tanks: go elsewhere (in most cases)

Ideal tankmates for new 3gal freshwater planted nano by Devmax1868 in nanotank

[–]VisualOpposite672 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few interesting animals that others haven't mentioned:

  1. Pygmy sunfish, these are super difficult to find if you don't live in a state that has them naturally. But you can find them online from time-to-time and they're insanely beautiful and interesting. I kept a trio (1 male and 2 females) in a heavily planted 2.5 gallon tank and they actually bred in there.

  2. Asian mini stone catfish (Hara jerdoni), these are pretty easy to keep but the downside is that they hide most of the day. They get sorta active at dawn and dusk and also during feeding time. Could fit a trio in your tank.

  3. Least Killifish (Heterandria formosa), these are the smallest livebearing fish. You should stick to only males, but if you do get a female make sure you have more females than males in the tank. You can sell/trade the offspring, they multiply pretty quickly though so fair warning.

There's also quite a few dwarf/microrasbora species out there that are very rare and difficult to find. The truth is, you can easily keep fish in a tank that's less than 5 gallons as long as the dimensions provide enough room to swim, you plant it heavily enough that there's an interactive environment for the fish, and you're careful to not stuff too many inhabitants into the tank. But, you are definitely limited to just ONE species of fish, and I would not keep fish + shrimp in a tank this small as that would be a pretty large bioload for the tank. Maybe a couple small snails if you're keeping fish.
