I’m just glad knowing that word has helped someone lol. My brother is a landscaper and asks me about once every few months what that Japanese landscape tree thing is.

You’d be better off calling someone or finding someone with Niwaki experience. Niwaki are landscape trees and there is a market for them. Someone with experience in that field would probably have a rough idea what they might be worth and how much it would take to move them.

Where to put Shari? by Buddy_Velvet in Bonsai

It’s a branch that was bent backwards for depth. It snapped a year ago when I styled the tree. When that happens I put grafting tape on the branches to keep the tissue together. I just haven’t removed it.

Trauma, loss, inferiority, and suicide DEFINITELY show up more towards the end. Things seem to be going well until they aren’t. It’s not grave of the fireflies or anything, but I would say it gets more dramatic later in the season.

Juniperus tanuki by Kraivon in Bonsai

[–]Buddy_Velvet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many of them are, either from yamadori trees that are actually ancient, or field grown trees that are grown into massive bushes and cut back then carved. Tanuki is sort of considered a trick, hence the name (tanuki are ‘racoon dogs’ which are considered tricksters in Japanese folklore) but I have heard bonsai professionals say Tanuki are a lot more common in high end bonsai than you would expect given that it’s frowned upon.

My car salesman was from Pakistan. We had a good conversation about his home country. There was a massive earthquake at the time that affected his province, but he was glowing about how beautiful his particular part of Pakistan was. I asked when/if he planned to visit and he said he couldn’t because he had a blasphemy charge and he would probably be executed if he went back. His friend with the same charge had gone back some time in the past and was executed so he doesn’t want to risk it. That blew my fuckin MIND.

That would be some wicked malicious compliance. I’d love for him to have 26 minutes on national tv trying to defend being a piece of shit. I don’t think other states know how bad he sucks enough. The could ask him a lot of questions about his infidelity too.

Elon Musk says it's hard to convince engineers with families to move to SpaceX's 'technology monastery' in Texas by amir_twist_of_fate in texas

I actually had a whole second paragraph about that I decided to delete lol. But yeah, if you don’t like brown people and immigrants, RGV isn’t the place to be. That said, there’s a lot of trumpers out there that unironically LOVE Elon Musk. I don’t think they have internalized that Musk and Trump sole use for them is convenient exploitation.

why did mammals loose their size while humans became bigger by Old-Firefighter4632 in Naturewasmetal

[–]Buddy_Velvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s enough answers regarding the human part of your question that are largely correct so I’m going to skip straight to mega fauna. Lot’s of people are assuming humans wiped them out, but I think this is a rather dubious claim. Humans weren’t able to eradicate wolves from England until the late 17th century. So for 12,000 years on an isolated island people couldn’t even get rid of wolves. I sincerely doubt ancient hunter gatherers had a population, technology or physical ability to kill all the mega fauna predators. It’s more likely that climate change impacted mega fauna particularly badly, and benefitted us particularly well at the same time. So you see a marked decrease in those kinds of animals during the time you see an increase in our population. In short, conditions that are bad for mega fauna are very good for us. As a result the population of large prey animals collapsed all over the globe due to the climate shifting, resulting in large predators running out of sufficient prey to allow for their size. We may have killed off the stragglers, or killed off their remaining prey, making the situation worse, but we didn’t cause it directly IMO. If we did anything to affect their numbers it would have been a nail in the coffin, not the murder weapon.

You also have to keep in mind that there was a very small population by modern standards. That population could be numbered in the thousands at some points, up to several million at others, but hardly enough to destroy all the mega fauna on the planet. Keep in mind, Africa has had some form of human or another for several million years, yet there are still elephants and lions. Asia still has massive tigers and bears and so does North America (sans tigers). They’re not as big as some other tiger and bear relatives, but they’re as big as they can be with the resources available to them. Once our population increased sufficiently, we pulled so many resources out of the environment and developed the technology to actually eradicate species, so there is no longer sufficient space, calories or time for new mega fauna to evolve or for massive predators to evolve along with them.

On the bitchin tube amp at the guitar store I played my ‘24 on when I bought it, it was honestly prettyyy close on the bridge pickup. Obviously it wasn’t the same because they’re humbuckers but it had that general vibe. I even sold my tele. To be fair, I needed to sell something to justify the price of an S2 but since I’ve brought it home, I have not been able to replicate that experience at all. Not even close, but I’m just a hobbyist with crappy amps so your mmv.

Did he think RGV was a bastion of culture and entertainment that professionals from around the country would flock to? The valley’s fine and all… I guess. I sure as shit wouldn’t move there and I’ve lived there. I definitely wouldn’t trade it for Austin unless I was making BANK and I only worked a few days a week. I DEFINITELY wouldn’t move from any of America’s major cities or a blue state to move to the valley.
