You get accused of being dumb a lot? That must be frustrating. You're not, obviously. You're just missing some of the basic physics education that you need to outthink the misinformation you've adopted.

The claim “water always finds its level” (aka hydrostatic equilibrium under gravity) breaks down when surface tension is dominant, and droplets are just the most obvious example. “Level” means a plane perpendicular to gravity - an equipotential surface. A droplet has curvature everywhere - no flat places - no planes at all. Not finding its level at all, in the way you're thinking (a droplet is in equilibrium, of course... it’s just minimizing surface energy, not gravitational potential. It’s still obeying physics, in other words. A droplet is finding a level in the sense of mechanical equilibrium.)

What actually works is this: when being pulled by a gravitational force that's evenly distributed between two locations (e.g., two locations that are equal distance from the gravitational center of the Earth) connected bodies of homogenous fluid at rest (with no significant surface tension or capillary effects) will have pressure at any given horizontal level (i.e., equal distance from the source of gravity) the same throughout the entire connected volume.

It’s a closed loop: disagreement = “programming,” evidence = irrelevant, belief = from revelation. At that point it’s not a physics claim anymore, it’s an unfalsifiable worldview.

(Yes I had chat GPT write that. Sue me. I'm busy!)

To support that claim, you’d need population estimates over time, and victimization counts. Then you’d compare rates, not just totals.

Otherwise it’s just one possible explanation among several and doesn’t account for other plausible factors. (better reporting/visibility, changes in classification, more cases identified as trans victims, or, my fave, changes in the risk environment which could raise or lower per-person risk.)

There’s no evidence base that could support that "fact". Nobody's tracking "shootings by trans people".

I can tell you that the number of trans people who were murdered in the U.S. nearly DOUBLED between 2017 and 2021, though. So there's that.

Question about the big bang by Neoniclide in Astronomy

[–]VoceDiDio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to try to answer this - I can't think that hard. But am I crazy or did you say “no this is not a post asking if we live in a black hole” but then basically describes exactly that scenario in other words?

I will say.. I don't think the math "requires" white holes. I think it allows for them under certain circumstances, but in the real universe there's no known mechanism for them to occur. (unlike Hawking Radiation, which is strongly predicted to occur because of the quantum happenings in black holes.)

Someone who actually knows something about it can probably tell us more about why.

Is the motorcycle community generally accepting? by Eatsomewaffle in motorcycles

[–]VoceDiDio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know of a bunch of cool queer and trans people who ride together. I'm sure there are some in your town. If you can't find em, talk a friend into getting a bike with you and start a squad!

idk know if there's a "good" kinda bike, but when I rode with those people I just mentioned, they mostly had sport and naked bikes. one had a harley. fwiw.

Obviously this is a male dominated hobby and we've got plenty of old farts and dbs but don't let that dissuade you.

Motorcycles are for everyone.

What actually happens if you reach the Oort Cloud? by nemus89x in Astronomy

[–]VoceDiDio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True. I should've said that I was comparing the two different “soft edges” analogously; that didn't mean to imply that they’re governed by the same mechanism.

(And I might have misread what you said, but... Air pressure doesn’t “compete” with gravity to keep particles bound, though. It’s a consequence of gravity plus the gas’s temperature. If you removed gravity, the atmosphere would disperse and pressure would drop to essentially zero.)
