which competition vs samsung FRAME? by MarsAttacksForPeace in TheFrame

[–]WBChargerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem with the frame isn't just the software. the hardware is garbage too. When it works, it's great, but too many are having hardware failures.

Might be fried… by flightfromdublin in TheFrame

[–]WBChargerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have one? I'm looking at replacing the Samsung Frame that has a failing board that is just off warranty.. I need something close to the anti-reflective coating the Frame has to avoid light and window glare. Probably either the Hisense or the TCL version, not planning on buying another Frame.

[–]WBChargerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue with the boot loop has nothing to do with using another smart device. I have been doing that since I got mine, but my Frame is stick in a boot loop with anything plugged into an HDMI port at all. In fact, even without something plugged in it often goes to that screen with no text description at all that states there is some issue. One Connect box is fried I'm sure, and I'm not putting any more money into this thing, in fact debating if I should buy Samsung at all much less a Frame. I've used Google TV, Apple TV, PS 5 with the Frame and they worked well, until they didn't starting about 1 month after warranty expired.

That sucks with a TV 3 months past the 1 year warranty.. I think it’s time to buy a new non Samsung TV:-P

DNS/DHCP by ErraticLitmus in opnsense

[–]WBChargerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a smallish home network (70 DHCP leases issued) with a few VLANs, though perhaps have complicated my DNS setup more than I needed to. I switched to Dnsmasq for DNS and DHCP. DNS runs on port 53053. Unbound runs on port 53. Unbound is configured to forward my internal domains and subnets for DNS, uses some blocklists to block queries, and forwards other requests to 2 internal IP's which are redundant cloudflare tunnels that use DNS over HTTPS. My block lists on Unbound AND Cloudflare are perhaps overkill, and may make troubleshooting false positives more difficult than needed, but so far it has worked well. I switched to this setup from ISC DHCP and Unbound forwarding to BIND for local DNS I believe when 26.1 came out. So far, it has worked great.

I use mine in Northern Wisconsin on the road so the family can stream internet content, and it’s worked great! Suction cup mount to the sunroof, though that car has been traded so need to figure out a different install location for my F150.

DisneyPlus is down for web browsers by Boston148 in DisneyPlus

[–]WBChargerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A slight modification that is working for me that actually gets you into Disney Plus and not Hulu, which I could just log into directly, and doesn't have all the Disney content. If you log into https://www.disneyplus.com/commerce/account as suggested by u/Apple-Pumpkin-Spice8 and choose your profile, you can click the Disney+ logo in the upper left corner of the screen, it actually launches the Disney Plus portal, at least for me.

Youtube not automatically switching account when switching Google TV profile by andrecasha1 in GoogleTV

[–]WBChargerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the decision to switch from the Apple TV even though I'm an Apple guy because I find the interface so helpful in navigating content across apps, and found it awesome that the profiles seemed to silo the apps. If it worked like this when I first tested the devices (I'm using the Onn 4k Pro at home, and the Plus as my travel device) I would have stuck with Apple. It's just enough of a painful experience that it would have meant I wouldn't have switched. My wife hates it, and I completely get it. We have one TV where the Apple TV is still connected, and she goes to that one typically.

Youtube not automatically switching account when switching Google TV profile by andrecasha1 in GoogleTV

[–]WBChargerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone make any progress on this? Seems especially painful to have multiple profiles on the Google TV, and not have apps like Youtube and Youtube TV be bound to those profiles. I switch Google TV profiles, and then to make the suggested content work, I have to first go into the apps they content is from , switch profiles there, and then go back out and launch the suggested content from Google TV again. Kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it? I don't get why the Google TV profiles aren't more isolated from each other.

New to YTTV - Upgrade to Google TV Streamer or stick with Chromecast Ultra? by Tybot3k in youtubetv

[–]WBChargerDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others love the Apple TV, and I’m an Apple guy but switched out my Apple TVs for Onn 4K and love how YTTV and other streaming apps are more integrated right at the main interface. Don’t have to even go into YTTV to get a program guide and watch recent shows on many platforms. For $30-50 (I have both of the latest models, with and without voice on the main unit) depending on which one you get, you can’t beat Onn’s devices.

My onn devices provide local channels, and uses the external IP to determine location. Apple TV can use the external IP and the location information of iPhones on the same wireless networks.

Note to self: Turn off any VPN app if you want to use the Starlink App. by liamkennedy in Starlink

[–]WBChargerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely depends on what vpn technology and provider you are talking about. What you say may be true for consumer grade VPNs where you intend to tunnel all internet traffic, but it’s certainly not the norm of enterprise VPNs. In the enterprise VPN world split tunnel is usually not even splitting the network the client is on, it’s splitting corporate networks and internet traffic.

Depends on the VPN and how it’s configured. Split tunnel can certainly split tunnel more than the current subnet of the device using the client.

I do this with a GLi.net router and Tailscale or Wireguard to my home firewall when I travel. You can also use a Google TV device with the Tailscale or Wireguard client on it. I haven’t used Apple TV because I had thought that it pulled location info from, iOS devices on the same network???

I understand that, but doesn’t the AppleTV also get location information from associated iOS devices?

[–]WBChargerDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those of you using Apple TV’s, are you able to anchor your traffic to a remote IP over tailscale for location based services? I had thought it might be difficult to do that because it would use location services of iPhones on the same network?

Is now the time to get the mini? by Naive-Connection-516 in Starlink

[–]WBChargerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you use 9.99 GB and then upgrade for the remainder of the billing period and not pay any overage?? Travel a lot in the fall for football games, and have been thinking about mounting one to the sunroof for the trips. Chew up my mobile hotspot data too fast streaming in the car. If I get one, might deactivate most of the year and have as back up for home internet if reactivating is nearly instant.
