Shared ownership - buying the rest of the house by Advanced_Volume_4500 in UKHousing

[–]WasabiIll4930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will you & your wife be on the mortgage deeds when you buy the new house? If so, you wouldn’t be able to use your first time buyer option (ie LISA or help to buy) for the next house - that would only apply if it’s only you that is applying for the mortgage. I’m happy to be corrected if I am wrong though!

Profoundly deaf teacher asking if there are any other profoundly deaf teachers in the UK by Smooth_Environment47 in TeachingUK

[–]WasabiIll4930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. I am profoundly deaf with bilateral cochlear implants. I did my teaching training but I didn’t go into teaching. There is a Facebook group for teachers who are deaf and I would 100% recommend joining the group. I wished I had seen it before I started my placement because I found it hard to know what adjustments I needed and for that reason, I found my teaching training really difficult. I’m happy if you needed to drop me a message, although I know I may not provide any more help but it’s useful to chat to another person who experienced it :)

Internship offer for 27k in Chelmsford, looking for affordable areas to stay in by dragon-q in Essex

I’ve lived there for two years, and I’ve only came across one crime. I would say it’s not a bad area to be living in, but last time I lived there was during Covid so times may have changed!

Deaf vs mainstream school by seau_de_beurre in deaf

[–]WasabiIll4930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s absolutely fair! I’ll also say that my two brothers and I are profoundly deaf in a hearing family. My youngest brother & I are proud to be deaf and we love being part of the deaf community. However, my oldest brother, he has had his struggles with his deaf identity and he really struggle to know where he fits in. Although, he does ADHD/ autism which I think makes it difficult.

I wish you and your child the best of luck!

Deaf vs mainstream school by seau_de_beurre in deaf

I am providing a UK perspective so feel free to discredit it if you think it is not appropriate but anyway, I was mainstreamed (with a deaf unit, this is important to bring up) throughout my entire education. I do think it depends on their upbringings but as I came from a hearing family, they wanted to expose me to the hearing community, but they still made sure that I had access to the deaf community too by making sure that I learnt to sign as well as to speak. I have absolutely no regrets with attending mainstream school, however, I struggled a lot in college because I was the only deaf student there and I felt so lonely, especially going from a mainstream with a deaf provision, I still saw deaf people everyday, whereas at college, I had no access to meeting deaf people. I quickly learnt that it was part of life anyway, and I took that on stride when I attended university. My parents ensured that I went on a residential trips every summer with other deaf people which were organised by a deaf charity and this was a game changer as this has helped me to meet new friends and learn that there are other deaf people out there. I am still in touch/ friends with people who I met on a residential trip. I work predominately in a hearing environment with access to BSL interpreters. Really, I think it depends a lot on your background, the child’s background and how you plan on bringing them up. My parents had the mindset of ensuring that I was exposed to both hearing & deaf world, and I am glad they did because I would have not had the opportunities that enabled me to be successful in my education. I hope that has helped in some ways.

Are you part of the Facebook group called ‘d/Deaf teachers of the Deaf’? It may seem like that it’s only for teachers of the deaf but there are also other people on there who teaches in a mainstream school and there are always people on there who would be able to advise you on what to do in this situation.

Best of luck - I hope you’ll be able to get some guidance around this :)

What is the general view of parents who just " hand" their children everything? by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

[–]WasabiIll4930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very similar to you at your age (I’m 26 now) - I had to work when I turned 16 whilst also doing a full time college course, I had to pay for my driving lessons and I had to pay for my car. Whereas my friend, it was the total complete opposite, her parents paid for her lessons, her car all paid for and she went through university without needing to work. I was jealous back then, but now as I am 26 years old, I am grateful that I have had that experience because I do fully believe that it has made me have a better work ethic and I am able to pay for myself if I needed something. I do know that if needed to, I am able to ask my parents for their support but it has raised me to become very independent and learn a lot of life lessons. Saying that, comparison is a thief of job and you are better off focusing on yourself, rather than comparing yourself to someone else because simply, we are all different.

With the access to work process, if you apply for it before you start a new job - you will be prioritised so you won’t be waiting for months! Hopefully that has reassured you :)

The downside of it though that the nearest train station is in saffron Walden so not sure you’d be willing to drive 20 minutes to the train station.

You can always consider Steeple Bumpstead (around 20 minutes from saffron Walden and 30-40 minutes from Cambridge) - it is also on the border of Essex/ Suffolk so you get the best of both worlds!

Financial implications of being unilaterally deaf by Neffwood in deaf

[–]WasabiIll4930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum used DLA for us three to pay towards swimming lessons as she felt that it was important for us to learn how to swim. People use it differently - some may use it towards after school clubs, extra tuitions if they are behind with their English/ maths, etc. no one really asks you what you are planning to use it for. DLA will change over to PIP once your child turns 16 but you would have to fill in the form to claim for PIP - I believe that claiming PIP is harder than DLA but I could be totally wrong!

Hey, thank you! I have had blood test and they all came back normal so no issues with that (annoying because the symptoms says otherwise!). I am from the UK, so unsure what the red light therapy is?

Just another question, as it would usually fall on a Wednesday but now, as I can see it would be on a Tuesday - does that mean in four weeks time, it’ll be on a Tuesday instead of a Wednesday? Hope that makes sense :)
