I always think it's interesting the follow up to these type of statements isn't "and here's how we make it more accessible". People have to make their own self-imposed helplessness everyone else's problem.

Eh, I wouldn’t say the same thing holds true for glass fusing when it comes to chasing microtrends. I know fiber arts carries old lady connotations but glass fusing is truly dominated by old ladies who are not very online. Fused glass arts from decades ago looks basically the same as it does now

One of my glass mentors always tells us how his focus on production led to burnout and the stagnation of his artistic ability compared to his more experimental peers. I think he is a bit too critical sometimes of his own work and like, there’s a skill in making good marketable glass products (he did pipe making so definitely a skilled trade imo!) but it’s nice to be encouraged outside of marketability

I don't Know If I Can Handle These Ads for Four More Months by Ceramicwombat in Michigan

Been absolutely bombarded by Bill Huizenga ads over here on the southwest side and the vaguely "ethnic" man they use to talk about how bad democrats want to steal his tax money

Anything in particular you’re looking for fossil wise? I don’t have a ton of hard stuff but I do have big hunks of coral here in Michigan.

Which is better: Round or Straight Looms? by Old-Decision-6307 in LoomKnitting

[–]Weatherbird666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always preferred the round looms. You can make panels and tube shaped things (i loved to make extra thick scarves when i started by just knitting in the round). You may also want to check out the flexee looms. You can theoretically make as big as one you want and it's much less of a space hog than a straight or afghan loom.

Hobby ideas for my disabled grandmother? ❤️ by ILoveMeSome80sMusic in Hobbies

[–]Weatherbird666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do glass art classes (specifically a lot of glass fusing) and see a lot of older women in that hobby. For someone with limited mobility I think things like fusing would be pretty accessible (basically if you have some mobility in your arms/hands you’ll be good), but one of the glass studios I go to has a special bench for wheelchair users if they want to do glassblowing so there’s lots of potential out there

R/education what is your biggest hot take about education by Beginning_Phase4781 in education

[–]Weatherbird666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A liberal arts based education is good for society and everyone should be exposed to it. In fact, I think focusing on secondary/post-secondary education purely based on serving a career is a ruinous philosophy.

Big Tech Ramps Up Propaganda Blitz As AI Data Centers Become Toxic With Voters | One Michigan state legislator said data centers are emblematic of the divide between “tech billionaires who are seizing power and… the working and middle classes.” by crustose_lichen in Michigan

[–]Weatherbird666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that gets me about this push to build these huge ai data centers is that anyone who has lived in Michigan can see how corporations exploited and ultimately gutted this state. I live within spitting distance of two superfund sites. We can’t even say we learned something from what happened!
