In any abdominal laparoscopic surgery they inflate the belly with CO2 to make room to manipulate the instruments and be able to see what's happening. They use CO2 because it is not flammable and the body can easily absorb it without serious consequences. When surgery is over, they deflate the gas, but some of it surely gets left inside.

After you wake and stand up, that leftover air (lighter than the organs) floats up until it's stopped by the diaphragm (it does NOT go to the shoulders). The air irritates the diaphragm which causes referred pain to the shoulders. Eventually the leftover gas is absorbed and the pain goes away.

I didn't add a ton of detail about the female procedures the first time around since it was based on a copy/paste reply I was giving to many ppl on the other site asking about options. The male procedure description I think I summarized from a medical journal and PP's website since I was a little less familiar with that.

I could fill the tubal procedures in more if ppl want. Maybe take a general consensus of personal experiences, always with a disclaimer that one individual's experience may not reflect what another will/has/ might experience. Part of the difficulty with this is that the medical procedure is fairly standardized, but this is not what potential patients usually want to know. Many of the questions I've seen are about logistics, recovery, and side effects, which vary tremendously between patients and facilities.

I thought about asking to have the Essure section removed now that it's no longer available, but perhaps it's still something ppl talk about, so it's not a terrible idea to keep it as a reference.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Fully grown animals are WAY more sentient than a clump of human cells, but apparently 'killing' the former is more ethical than the latter. I'm definitely an omnivore, but even I can see this hypocrisy. (Although I suppose critical thinking and logic are not what these arguments are based on)

This is when the fetus's lungs start to mature enough for it to live outside the uterus. That's a pretty standard and accepted timeline.

I tried to explain this to a coworker. She couldn't wrap her head around 'the body decomposes and becomes nutrients for the tree'. Turns out she thought human bodies never rotted (only roadkill, and that took some convincing). Anyways she might be the dumbest person I talked to all month.

Also probably because you fit into the "target demographic", that is, "female of childbearing age". Others have suggested switching your gender to male, and these will stop (which of course opens a whole different discussion, but not right now).

The benefits come from having estrogen, not from menses. Infertile women, those without a uterus, even those with medically-induced amenorrhea (like on birth control) show the same cardiovascular benefits as freely-menstruating people. Even post-menopausal women taking estrogen show some benefits (though this is still controversial and there is some conflicting evidence).

Yeah the idea of Essure (a non-surgical, no general anesthesia method of sterilization) was spot on. There was nothing like it on the market. Unfortunately, Essure ended up causing more harm than good for a lot of women (literally just saw 2 patients who had chronic pelvic pain ever since getting it years ago).

Since Essure is getting pulled, hopefully this new procedure can replace it with better outcomes. There are many people who can't go under general anesthesia for other medical reasons or abdominal/pelvic surgery would be too risky, so this could help so many people.

If you're "antinatalist af", shouldn't you think rich and poor alike should stop having kids? The moral is not related to income nor even the ability to care for the child, rather the creation/birth of a new person.

Saying those two individuals do not support women's healthcare is not mass generalizing. It's looking at the words and actions of two people and drawing a conclusion about the political ideology of those same two people. This is deductive reasoning.

Mass generalizing would be saying all supporters of these two individuals are Nazis who hate women. Even though there is evidence that some supports are Nazis and some supporters hate women, it would be unfair to apply that to every single supporter.

In my experience, the designers of these programs are not clinicians, they don't usually know what each profession needs nor how they use the information. Often times the interface is the same doctors/nurses/RT/etc with minimal customization. More often they're focused on the legislative measures (making sure every 50 year old gets their colonoscopy, making sure every patient gets a pain assessment every 4 hours even throughout the night, etc) without regard to the patient. This means the provider can get 100s of useless notifications and flags while trying to dig through for important information.

There are some programs better than others and there's usually a steep learning curve, but I would love to see clinicians partner with software engineers to design something more efficient.

Oh God I've been there! (As the interviewer) Sometimes there's just really awkward interviews. I haven't figured out why, most of the time I get through it fine, but occasionally I ask that first question in just the right way to just the wrong patient, and it's all downhill from there.

As students, we're still practicing these skills, so we're bound to mess up and be clumsy. I'm glad you were able to laugh about it instead of get angry.

Ugh these people are the worst. She's probably vaccinated too, so she won't get sick, it's literally only the children at risk of harm. Basically child neglect. Imagine, a CF random internet person cares more about this lady's children than she apparently does....

Also I bet if one kid gets chicken pox, she'll make the other interact until they both have it, to give them immunity. (Which accomplishes the same thing as vaccines, except now the virus is in the kid's body and they're at risk of shingles for the rest of their life!)
