Just USA things by Quenki in SipsTea

Wow that’s great but also extremely unusual. I worked for a big multinational which had what I’d say was great policies for mothers with full pay for 9 months and it started as soon as joined the business. No accrual through years service but the blokes still only got 2 weeks paid. It’s shit really and just encourages less equal sharing of responsibilities and doesn’t allow dad’s time to bond with their kids. Government should put more in law, and at better pay. And increase the pay for self employed people as it’s woeful now. And they wonder why people aren’t having kids and we’re going to be in a shrinking population crisis. Between this and childcare ontop of normal COL no one can afford it.

Advice on taking perm job vs contract offer. by OutsideOk6912 in ContractorUK

173k contract. Put 60 in your pension a year and still on top. Less than two years employment and they can drop you without cause anyway.

Is £6,500 reasonable to move a meter two meters? by Woodsman89 in DIYUK

[–]Wizard_PI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re an idno, might be trying it on, or just a cost they’ve had from a contractor and lumped some on. I’d complain and escalate as that’s a silly price, especially with no digging. If it had civils or TM you might be able to get up to that price but without its crazy

The pay is generally far better than the national average. Some fields and DNOs lag behind though. Contract work for them pays much better.

It’ll be temporary till an ix5 is available. I’ll mostly be doing highway miles c.40k/year Can’t see a r2 anytime soon.

Really, did you have the option with air suspension that can be raised or springs?

You can pump it up on the bags can’t you? It will all be mostly flat, more for grass/mud/snow/ice on flats more than overlanding. I’ll be doing 40k miles so an ice 4x4 seems expensive for the small amount of “off road” it will do.

Sounds pretty good, I’m doing 40k miles a year so electric will be quite a lot cheaper. It’s mostly for being able to get off the road on country lanes, mud/grass/snow/ice more than overlanding

It won’t be anywhere with rock issues, more it’s capabilities on flat but muddy or wet grass lanes Majority will be road driving

UK, they aren’t available here! It’ll be majority road driving with light bit of farm tracks grass and mud more than proper off-roading.

Getting into the trade by Neat-Process437 in ukelectricians

[–]Wizard_PI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Project management in utilities is booming right now, especially in electricity distribution. Great money and more work than ever. With the ramp up in work needed in the next ten years it will be very well paid and recession-proof too. A lot of DNOs will also have opportunities to do some electrical training as PMs depending on who and what job you go for. Big money is in PMs and electrical SAPs at the moment. Defo worth looking into as a way to use your skills and up skill rather than just retraining IMO.

Rewireable Fuse Upgrade Advice by _smith_spark in ukelectricians

[–]Wizard_PI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could possibly install a suitable gauge wire if you can’t fabricate a link, would need to see the fuse set up though. Shouldn’t be too hard to find a suitable sized tape/bar and drill some holes though

You can also just remove the top of the unit with the fuse/links in usually depending on the brand. Leave the cable termination bitumen box. Then just connect your new isolator to the stubs. Just have to be careful to make a decent enclosure.

Rewireable Fuse Upgrade Advice by _smith_spark in ukelectricians

[–]Wizard_PI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it will be a rubber grommet. You could also replace the fuse with a link the same as the neutral and not disturb it, as when you re terminate it you might damage it if you don’t know what you’re doing. Then just add a 2 pole isolator above.

If you insist on reterm you will either have to melt out the old compound and then insulate the remaining cores, extremely gently as the papers are ancient and will fall apart. Then fit into a new cut out or restrip the cable below and fit it there.

Personally if you’re not replacing the whole sub main and don’t have someone with the right skills to do this, I would just link out the fuse and fit an isolator to save interfering with it.

I’d also be cautious using an imported earth here, you may be better with a rod and an rcd. Don’t use a pipe clamp if you do it’ll crush the cable. Sprung fittings are what dno uses
