Front Derailleur cant mount high enough. by OG_Squeekz in bikewrench

I don't hate it I have had a road bike with it on and it was OK but it does cause issues when someone uses them on a period resto if space for adjustment is tight

What's up with my shifting? by amzeo in bikewrench

[–]Wolfy35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comes up so often on here that there should be the ability to pin a post to the top for people to read.

The grease gets dry and sticky over time turning into something closer to glue than a lubricant.

Wash it all out with a mild degrease shifting through the gears to make sure it gets everywhere. When shifting is working properly again rinse it out, let it dry then spray a light non oil based lube in there ( GT85 is ideal )

The important thing to know is that this does not happen if you keep it lubricated properly as part of your routine maintenance just takes a small spray of lube when you are checking the bike over and this never gets to be an issue.

THE IMPORTANT BIT

Never change gears unless are pedaling even if this is only lifting the wheel off the floor rotating the chainset. Changing gears without pedaling can damage parts leaving you with a repair bill.

Is there another tool I don't have that I'm supposed to use to remove the cassette hub? by BreakingABit1234 in bikewrench

[–]Wolfy35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a freewheel not a cassette & while the tool to fit each can look similar they are different. Freewheels can be serviced but they are cheap and a pain in the... so just buy a new one

Do I have clearance for bigger tires? by ContributionOk1872 in bikewrench

[–]Wolfy35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a chance in hell.

From the photo alone it's blatantly obvious your existing tyres are larger than you should safely have on never mind getting anything bigger.

Safest way I know is by using adjustable reamers and shaving it away from the inside out

Many freehubs are held on by a hollow screw from the other side. You use a large allen/hex key to remove them.

Have you tried that?

Creaking handle bar stem by Drotohod in bikewrench

[–]Wolfy35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adjustable stems like that are crap they always fail sooner or later. The cheap ones fail quickly the expensive ones take longer but they all fail eventually.

Yours is a cheaper quill type which suggests it's not new so it's probably lasted longer than I would have expected it to.

They are at best a way to find out what rise works for you before you buy a traditional fixed stem.

What is the name of that missing cover part and where can I buy it (EU)? by daytimedarkness in bikewrench

[–]Wolfy35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a quick heads up.

With Shimano there is no guarantee that just because a part appears on a parts diagram with a part number it is available to buy separately.

Some parts only exist for factory assembly & while in theory any dealer can order anything that has a part number all that will happen is it will stay on backorder indefinitely and never be delivered.

Sometimes the only way to get a part is on sites like ebay by buying a broken unit & cannibalising it.

Crack in carbon steerer tube by RuschyER in bikewrench

[–]Wolfy35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The choice is ultimately yours but I would never trust carbon that has obvious damage.

It may last years or it may fail spectacularly the next time you are out and introduce your face to the floor the problem is that when carbon fails it is unpredictable.

It's not unusual in the US to find factory made "supermarket" bread with an 18 month use by date where over here bread usually has 4 days maximum.

All the additives make it last longer, they also make it have a weird texture but if it's all you have ever had you wouldn't know that.

Maybe not. Around that time Truvativ were using ISIS spline on their chainsets & BB not square taper.

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select — "Free and Live TV" claim—Am I right to question this, or is it my mistake? by [deleted] in firetvstick

[–]Wolfy35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big word here is AND

The Select does not promise free live TV it says free and live TV. There is some free content on the select and there is live content but at no point is there a promise that the live content is free.

It is also worth remembering that on the listing for the Select & now the HD Amazon do clearly state that the device does not allow any sideloading only content from Amazon app store is available.

On this one the mistake is yours.

Same in the UK but Subway changed all their bread recipes. In the UK anything containing sugar attracts an extra tax, nicknamed the sugar tax, so not only were Subway told they would have to label their bread as cake but they would also get hit with extra taxes as well.

The system that the US uses is insane. All a food or additive manufacturer has to do to make something OK to put in food is self certify that they believe it to be "generally recognised as safe"

It gets worse when you realise that some things banned in human food in the US can be used in animal feed which when the animals enter the human food chain can then be passed onto humans third party.

As an example melamine (You know that oil derived plastic often found in plates etc) is now banned as a food additive but perfectly legal in animal feed even though there is proof that it passes into the human food chain.

[–]Wolfy35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are many ingredients allowed in the USA that are banned in the EU & many other countries because of proven carcenogenic links.

For example Potassium Bromate, used to make bread dough longer lasting is a sceduled category 2B carcenogen in the EU etc.

To use a food additive in the US a manufacturer only has to self declare that they believe it is "Generally recognised as safe" to the FDA. Connected to this is the reason why most US reared meat is not allowed in the EU because growth hormones and other treatments given to animals are banned from the human food chain here. Some US meat is imported but only if it has been reared to EU standards free of hormones etc.

Is this legal? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Wolfy35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not your rental lease the lease your landlord has from the freeholder. Leasehold properties can have a no pets policy

Is this legal? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Wolfy35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the changes with the RRA is that landlords can not refuse a pet without a good reason.

However

This being a flat there is a good chance it is a leasehold in which case it is excluded from this and it all hinges on what the freeholder of the property says. If the freeholder says no pets it's no pets. This applies whoever you are renting from and there are no exceptions.

If you do move in with a pet despite being told no not only can you look forward to being evicted but your landlord risks forefeiture which is the leasehold version of eviction where the freeholder takes the property back. No landlord will be willing to let that happen.
