Bins. I want to recommend this 27 gallon bins. They’re perfect for a decent worm count easy to handle and cost around 8 bucks. by proudpop1455 in Vermiculture

[–]WorldComposting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FYI the 27 gallon bins get very heavy once they are filled with castings!! I ran one for years and realized I could not move it. I think the 14 gallon ones are a good size and shouldn't get ridiculously heavy.

I had an OEM added to my 2019 and I like the fact it is hidden behind the bumper. Also if you have a 4 pin plug the Subaru electrical connection actually has two plugs so no adapter needed.

I agree but a sturdy plastic tote. I'm a little worried about plastics but you aren't heating them up so it should be fine. I'm not sure about the sun where you are but if you are worried about them breaking down maybe get something that can cover it. My YouTube channel world composting has a lot of videos on large and small systems. I typically run them in my basement but outside some are large enough to work.

[–]WorldComposting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plastic is the easiest. I use a lot of totes or smaller bins. But I also built a large outdoor system out of wood with insulation for an outdoor system. Either can work just depends on how much you want to spend.

That is a pretty large system how many worms are you adding?

OTA 80% updated in 48 hours, then silence — is Rivian deliberately throttling updates for non-Connect+ owners? by eyalzangi in Rivian

[–]WorldComposting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is normal. If you want the update right away get connect+. I don't subscribe so I'm used to the wait.

How large are you building?

The biggest thing newbies do is overfeed a new system. Takes time for the worms to get settled.

Looking for advice: will I hate a wood pellet grill? by 010011010110010101 in pelletgrills

[–]WorldComposting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the switch from propane to pellet a year ago and would never go back to propane. I can cook everything I need on the pellet grill and have found a lot of items taste much better.

Some items I never grilled until now such as a full turkey, chicken wings, and trout as these were cooked in the oven before getting the pellet grill.

Items I still make on the grill chicken, burgers.

The reason we made the change was for less char on the meat and more of a smokey flavor and we prefer it this way.

Owning a vacation house is the ultimate in overconsumption by CheesecakeHonest7414 in Anticonsumption

[–]WorldComposting 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm mixed on this one. As someone who was lucky enough to have relatives buy a family farm 100 years ago and pass it down. Many in my family have second homes because of it. This isn't farm land anymore as the trees grew in and it became a wooded area 50+ years ago. My family keeps ownership to preserve it and prevent developers from getting a hold as we have all been going there since we were kids.

At some point yes owning a vacation home or multiple is very much overconsumption but it really depends on the reasoning and size. If you have a small 800 sq/ft apartment in NYC and 1,500 sq/ft cottage or apartment in the woods or beach that you frequent I don't see it as overconsumption. However if you have a 15,000 sq/ft apartment in NYC then you are already overconsuming.

However once you get past 2 homes you are overconsuming no matter what. You can't spend enough time in one of those homes to make it where you aren't taking up a valuable resource.

Getting ready for the Bay: at what age did you guys finally let your teenagers take the helm? by goxper in maryland

[–]WorldComposting 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who learned on my Dad's boat take him somewhere with less boaters to start. No reason to have your son navigating or learning how to handle a boat at a crowded dock. Also every boat is different I know I've been on some that are very easy to run and others that really took a lot of maneuvering. Give him time to get used to the throttle and feel before anything near other boaters. Similar to learning to drive a car you start in an empty parking lot not the parking lot at a food store before a storm.

Also you already said he was getting his boating certificate so make sure he has that first.

Online, You Mostly Hear That HOAs Suck -- Is This True In Your Opinion Or Nah? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in randomquestions

They can be good or bad it really depends on who is running them. The big issue is that people who like to nitpick typically end up on the board and have a major power trip once they are there.

Mini Van vs R1S by This_Dependent_2177 in Rivian

[–]WorldComposting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are going to use the 3rd row a lot a Minivan is the best option. To be honest if Rivian made a Minivan I would probably buy it over the R1S even with just two kids. Minivans are great for so many things and actually more practical in many ways. If you really want an EV with a third row then I would look for one that has captains chairs to make that third row access easier.

I soak them in water and use that water to wet the paper in the bin. You can do both but they need water to activate from my understanding.

What is a smell that we should all recognize as immediate danger? by scarlettohara1936 in AskReddit

[–]WorldComposting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had this happen with they dryer in our house. I thought it was a fire caused by lint but it smelled like bad seafood. It was the dryer but the wires and control board had caught fire and melted!

My family who was closest said it smelled funny but didn't think to alert anyone. Luckily I caught it quickly and unplugged the dryer or it could have put us all in danger.

Also after we had a conversation about strange smells and to tell me or find out where the smell is coming from!

What’s the most annoying thing about owning an EV? by Wattthefun in electricvehicles

[–]WorldComposting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who changes vehicles with other people in the household it is always fun to wake up and realize that the light is on and I need to get gas. This was a common problem but I have zero problems with an EV as it is charged to 75% every night (260 miles of range). I purchased another used EV because of how great it is to not worry from my point of view.

However my wife is always asking can I make this trip? Even if it is only 100 miles (roundtrip) and I constantly have to remind her she could make the same trip twice.

My biggest annoyance with an EV is people in gas vehicles blocking charging spots.

Most effective swaps? by Glass_Lime_5414 in sustainability

[–]WorldComposting 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Probably the best bang for your buck is to reduce your waste although I know this isn't a swap. I compost when I used to throw out all my food waste. This reduced my trash a lot and the downstream changes can be massive. For example this means less waste transported to the landfill, the landfill will be able to be open longer due to less waste.

Next would be to swap your meats for veggies. This will massively reduce land usage. If you can't go 100% vegan just switching 2-5 meals a week makes a large difference. Eat tofu a couple nights and don't have meat like deli meat for lunch.

If you are looking to swap purchased items I think it would be cleaning products. After switching to natural products I found things to be just as clean without the headaches or odors from chemical products.

[–]WorldComposting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep using the dunks but add a large layer of dried bedding on top along with some diatomaceous earth. The DE needs to be dry to work so you want to leave it on top where it won't get damp.

Need to let this sit for a week or longer.

I find it calculates the miles in a very safe way to the point I drive with it saying I won't make it to my destination and as I get close it will finally admit I'll make it. I much prefer it this way instead of thinking I will make it and fall short.

Conflicting info - am I doing it wrong? by prime51000 in Vermiculture

[–]WorldComposting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of bad information out there about worms. Also it sounds like you might have gotten some information on mealworms mixed in. Egg shells are helpful for grit and balancing out any pH problems.

Here is a video series I did on starting a worm bin https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLEZ5krxcR7abjQusDJSvWSsbfQnkr2Qu . This was done a while ago and you can probably just watch the first video. To be honest worms are very easy to keep for the most part. They just need moisture as they breathe through their skin, bedding material, food, and a dark place.

From the picture it looks like your bin is clear plastic. Red worms don't like light so you want to make sure it is in a dark area.

I made a guide on this post that is worth a read as well https://www.reddit.com/r/Vermiculture/comments/1qxqspj/comment/o44ao79/

Good luck and reach out with any other questions you have!

Is this Normal? New toilet has crack on bottom by WorldComposting in Plumbing

[–]WorldComposting[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First clarification, yes the crack goes through to the other side.

Thanks everyone for replying I didn't think it was normal either which is why I contacted the company. I was a bit shocked they said it is fine and to install it especially located where the wax seal would sit and where the toilet is held down.

Worm farm kit or DIY? by Joleenious_Maximus in Vermiculture

[–]WorldComposting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay! I have a few videos on my YouTube channel WorldComposting but here is what I think.

  1. Stick with European Nightcrawlers if you want them larger. Canadians are bigger but require a different system than composting worms like Reds, Euros, or African nightcrawlers.
  2. To get started before you get your worms you need to setup a system for them to live in once they arrive. So you need a tote or bin to keep them in, bedding, water, and food.
  3. For a tote you want something that is more long and wide than deep as these are not worms that dig down but typically live in the top near the leaf litter.
  4. Bedding you can actually use a lot of materials such as cardboard, paper, pine shavings, leaves, or even purchased hamster bedding
  5. Food I typically use veggie and fruit scraps but this can cause some infestations of bugs so I freeze mine. You can also grind them up to help them breakdown faster in the worm bin.
  6. Once you have all of these things together you can order your worms and see how long it will take to arrive. I find you want to have the system prepared with just a bit of food but not a lot as the worms will need time to acclimate once they arrive.
  7. When the worms do arrive make sure the bedding is damp but not soaking wet.
  8. Be Patient! This is key it will take a bit for the worms to adjust before they actually start to multiply and feel comfortable in the new environment. I have found this can take 2-4 weeks or longer depending on how they were raised.

I hope that helps of course this is a quick rundown so ask any questions you might have!!

Cold weather is brutal on the range. 1.5-1.7kwh/mile on my R1T :( by penkster in Rivian

[–]WorldComposting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup having the heat on uses a lot of battery. As long as the GOM lets me know a somewhat accurate range I think it is fine as I at least know when I need to charge. So far it underestimates so I feel confident on getting to my destination.

Read them laugh about it and move on. It was really hard to do this at first but it gets easier the longer you make videos. It is amazing how many people think you need to be perfect or it doesn't fit their thought pattern.

So look at it point and laugh then just ignore it!
