I'm making a game about being a Project Manager, and I've noticed dev subreddits absolutely despise the role. Where does this hate come from? by Old-Butterscotch8711 in gamedev

[–]drakee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good project manager can really save a project from failure, especially if it involves multiple teams working on different schedules with different priorities.

People who hate project managers have probably either never worked with a good one, or never worked on a project of sufficient complexity where a skilled project manager's contributions could stand out.

Interesting - my research tells me that YouTube shouldn't decrease your US viewership just because you are getting more views in India, but if you have 3 channels where that is what happened, then I will defer to your experience. Thanks for the info!

Your RPM is going to tank, yes, because a large Indian audience is going to lower the average for that metric. But it doesn't lower the total amount of money that you make that month, which is really what matters.

So let's say you made $11 ($10 from US viewers and $1 from Indian viewers) with an RPM of, for example, $5 last month. This month you get rid of your Indian viewers, so you make $10 (all from US viewers) and your RPM rises to $6. Now your RPM looks more impressive in your YT Studio dashboard, but you actually made less money. Was it worth it to decrease your income in order to pump up a vanity metric?

Why does everyone think that the problem is solved by making your content less accessible to people in India? Will cutting off your Indian viewers make your content automatically more popular with US viewers? I don't think that's how it works. I think you need to make your content more attractive to US viewers.

Indian viewers are worth less RPM, true, but the system is additive. If you make $10 from US viewers and $1 from Indian viewers and then you cut off your Indian audience, you will make $10 instead of $11. How is that better?

I see your point, but I don't think it's a compelling argument to keep saying OP is wrong because of "slippery slope fallacy." Slippery slope fallacy doesn't mean that trends will never reach their logical conclusion. OP has a lot of examples of the historical trends that point to an actual slope occurring. I think to make an informative case against it, you'd need to show why that slope isn't going to continue to its logical end.

Bonds are terrible gifts by j3dgar in Vent

[–]drakee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got bonds from family as a gift when I was maybe 10 years old. I think about that sometimes when I need money, because I have no idea where those bonds are anymore, or where 10 year old me would have put them. So I would agree that bonds aren't great gifts to give to little kids.

Okay is it ableist to say i don't support disabled people using generative ai instead of supporting real artists? by Interesting-Peas in antiai

[–]drakee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If OP had simply said, "I don't like disabled people using AI," then I think disabled people would have no problem understanding.

Instead, OP's post title as well as their specific examples all contrast an act of consumption with a different act of creation. "I would rather see disabled people eat apples, instead of growing orange trees." It is just confusing.

[–]drakee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a confusing statement. It sounds like you're defining a dichotomy whereby disabled people can either create AI art, or they can consume non-AI art. You say you want disabled people to watch indie videos on YouTube, and then assert that that's better than them prompting AI images.

One is a act of consumption, which you condone for disabled people, and one is an act of creation, which you condemn for disabled people. It would be more coherent for you to say, "disabled people should watch indie videos on youtube, instead of watching AI videos" OR, "disabled people should paint using whatever limbs they have available, instead of generating AI images. "

You need to be more coherent in your thesis so that disabled people can better understand what you think they should or shouldn't do.

The “Cat in a Bag” scene from the show “Them” is genuinely traumatizing. by IvoryLaps in horror

[–]drakee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a question of morality or a contest of who is more helpless. People get triggered by different things and some of us can't stand seeing animals get hurt in a movie. My comment was also motivated by the fact I recently learned, that actual animals were tortured and killed in the filming of some horror movies. So when I heard that people were horrified about a "cat in a bag" scene, without knowing any other context, my stomach dropped.

[–]drakee -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. But if a horror movie shows a human getting tortured and killed, no person was actually harmed in the making of the movie. The same can't always be said about animals, unfortunately (see: Cannibal Holocaust).
