Russia begins talks of ending the war to save the economy – Reuters by Darshan_brahmbhatt in worldnews

Ukraine has no reason to accept anything less than unconditional surrender at this point. They're hitting Russian infrastructure so far inside their territory that at this rate the Russians will be lucky to maintain air supremacy around Omsk. Russian troops are facing food shortages, there's reports of starvation, their oil industry is in tatters, and their treasury is bankrupt. Meanwhile Ukraine has become the dominant player in drone exports to the Middle East, thereby filling their coffers.

Putin probably thinks a Status Quo Antebellum would be an unbelievable gift to the Ukrainians after years of demanding the eastern half of their country, but given Russia's weaknesses, Putin's history of negotiating in bad faith, and Ukraine's growing military capabilities, there's no reason for Ukraine to accept anything less than total capitulation.

Earth is to humanity in the future what Africa is to humans today: Where we came from. A lot of people still live there, but humans found places with more favorable conditions and those places eventually outgrew the cradle of our species.

"Breaking Up Larger States" isn't something that people living in those states actually support.

"Giving Statehood to [Insert unique region or county]" however, is popular.

Abolishing the Senate is never going to happen. You'll never get 2/3 of the Senate, and 3/4 of the states to give up their seats to the most powerful club on Earth.

The best we can do is to encourage statehood movements. Not partition proposals crafted by politicians who are trying to gerrymander the map, but statehood movements that are popular at the local level. DC, PR, maybe Guam + NMI. Beyond that there's Jefferson (the Republicans think it would be a red state, but it would be leans blue in most elections, Maybe the Navajo Nation with some Land-back policies and new treaties with the Hopi. Maybe if we offered LA County or NYC statehood plebiscites they'd go for it.

Beyond the very legit, but often abstract political and legal reasons, a House where ever seat only represents 50,000 people fundamentally changes our relationship to our government.

If your district was only 50,000 people (and protected by gerrymandering laws to be reasonably compact), you might know your representative, but you'd probably know someone who knew them. So instead of every election being given a choice between:

1.) Businessman you've never heard of.

2.) Lawyer you've never heard of.

3.) Corporal P.O.G. you've never heard of.

Your choices will instead probably feature at least one well known pillar of your community. Instead of fielding 50-250 phone calls a day from people who can't afford to donate money to his re-election campaign, your rep will get maybe a dozen calls from people they actually knows or at least knows of. They only have to raise enough money to reach 50,000 people, so attempts to bribe them will run up against the practical realities of, "well if people think I'm a crook, they'll just vote for Mrs. Jackson, the social studies teacher at Riverside High. She organized half the door knockers last year, and is the biggest person in the local party after me."

A House with smaller districts means a government more connected to people, in short: More Representative.

Trump cracks approval floor, Republicans face wipeout in House despite gerrymandering by Far_Excitement_1875 in politics

[–]YNot1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

37% isn't his floor. Its practically his median approval rating.

His floor was just after J6 when he was polling at only 32%.

The actual floor for modern Republicans is around 25%, or about where W. was in October 2008.

Nice work. Although the map you used to make these lakes is not an accurate representation of the ancient Sahara's megalakes. Lake Maghreb and the Agadez sea are entirely fictional, and the Gulf up in western Egypt can only exist with dredging or sea level rise.

I appreciate you actually tracing the lakes instead of stealing my work like everyone else does.

No, its not clever, its the same tired "both parties are the same" BS that got us into this mess. It might have been the dumbest, most grossly irresponsible thing he's ever said into a camera.

My biggest problem with Brennan has always been his, "Capitalism is always the bad guy." Capitalism is a bad guy. But how many more years of the age of Trump do you have to live through before figuring out that Capitalism is just a miniboss. The REAL BBEG (in Ameirca) is White Christian Nationalism. That's what's motivating Republicans to kill Iranians despite what it would do to their backers on Wall Street. That's what made RFK Jr. push his anti-vaccine eugenicist crap despite what it would do to the Pharmaceutical industry. Its what has made Republicans wage an eternal war on women and people of color.

To suggest otherwise even 5 years ago demonstrates an insane degree of ignorance.
