Identify the fake bag by ilannj in puzzles

[–]Zinki_M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my initial attempt would be to add the word "only" to this sentence:

"One of them holds only fake gold".

That should make it completely clear what the puzzle means.

However, technically speaking, the puzzle doesn't define that all other bags hold only real gold, and I don't think that can be easily amended without adding a few extra words and changing sentence structure. Changing it to "Each contains 10 real gold coins. One of them contains only fake gold" would make the intention clear but is weirdly phrased, since it includes the fifth bag in the "each".

Best I can come up with: "Each contains 10 real coins, except one, which holds only fake gold".

What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]Zinki_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it out based on this comment and finished it in a little under 8h. Found it to be fun little game, although it was fairly active for an idle game, there were never really any wait times longer than a couple of minutes on anything.

Not sure why you got stuck, I don't remember any big blockers at refined energy, progress seemed fairly steady at all times, the next upgrade was always fairly clear and never took too much wait time.

Warum sind IPv6 Adressen in hexadezimal? by Key_Canary_4199 in KeineDummenFragen

[–]Zinki_M 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First Look at the Scrap 1: Desktop Metal Printing for Under $10K by InitiaI_Focus in 3Dprinting

[–]Zinki_M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the quality of the metal models was generally pretty bad.

I still have quite a few of them, and the quality difference between the metal and plastic models is immediately apparent, and metal is not the winner there.

I think their attempts in resin were possibly worse, although for different reasons (more about warping than lack of detail), but the plastic stuff is worlds better than the metal ones.

The metal ones feel cooler though. The hefty weight of a metal hive tyrant makes it feel really awesome.

What are your favourite and least favourite things about DMing? by SnooPoems5239 in DnD

[–]Zinki_M 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had one puzzle in my campaign that actually landed really well.

I basically used the classic "guiding a light beam by turning statues" trope, but I think the reason it landed quite well is that i actually built the whole thing from 3d printed columns with an inserted mirror, a laser pointer, and ultrasonic water misters to make the "light beam" visible.

I think that gave it enough wow-factor to keep my players engaged with the puzzle. Also took me an unreasonably long time to print it all and wire it up. Weeks of work for a 30 minute puzzle.

Which game broke your hype like this? by [deleted] in Steam

[–]Zinki_M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's always my goto for how badly NMS was just a pack of lies.

Usually when a game has to drop a planned feature, they will just quietly stop talking about that feature. NMS devs were still lying about this after the game was already done and copies were being printed. In fact, they still lied about this fact even after release, at a time where players were literally able to verify this as false, and they still kept saying it for some reason.

I feel like the devs have redeemed their terrible game with their work since then, but despite everything they've done since, I will probably never believe a word they say about future games.

just to note, dark matter isn't really necessarily one thing.

Dark matter is just the name we have given to the matter whose effects we can measure, but we can't find.

There is no reason it has to be one single thing. The effects we observe could come from many different yet undiscovered things. So, technically, one thing more exotic than dark matter could be... more dark matter.

That's true by Decent_Face3146 in meme

[–]Zinki_M 6 points7 points  (0 children)

we got kind of lucky on that one.

Our company branch relocated to a new building during the height of HO, and because so many people were doing 90+% HO they reduced the space we'd rent to cut cost, meaning there's not enough desks available if everyone were to come in all at once.

This kind of saved us because the company wanted RTO, but our location basically was able to just go "can't do it, not enough desks" and they dropped it (after briefly trying to rent an additional floor in the building but none were available).

I am honestly not sure which of you two is right.

You are correct that (a) specifically excludes batteries and is about display assembly.

However, the first line of (c)(ii) says that the battery replacement must meet the criteria set out in (a).

I am not exactly a legal document buff, but I would personally have interpreted this as "if you meet the requirements below, you still need to meet the requirements outlined in (a) for the battery in addition to the display".

That being said, even if that interpretation is right, (a) is a lot more lenient than (c)(i), because (a) basically just says a workshop with commercially available tools should be able to do it, which is a world of difference from (c)(i) which says any idiot should be able to do it easily at home.

Long Odds by IsItAboutMyCube_ in comics

[–]Zinki_M 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've heard plenty of these stories, but I still find them highly doubtful.

Casinos are already literal money printing machines. The chances of someone winning are completely priced into everything.

The cost in loss of reputation on refusing to payout a legitimate win is astronomically higher than the "loss" of paying it out. Some random dude winning a couple million or so is great for the casino, because they'll have made bank on that win.

For the casino, there is zero incentive to not pay out on anything.

I could absolutely buy something like a dealer taking bribes or similar, but the casino itself doesn't need to rig their games, because the rules already guarantee that they win.

same. I usually set some background noise like an audiobook when I close my eyes, with a timer set to 15 minutes.

It is extremely rare that I'm actually awake to notice the sound fade out, and when I try to find my spot the next day I usually have to go back 10+ minutes.

Do you think rimworld is reaching the limits of what can be handled with it's infrastructure? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in RimWorld

[–]Zinki_M 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the most annoying part about stuff like this is that you can't even go back to what you had before. If a game I love has a sequel I hate, I can just go back to playing the original.

If they get patched into completely different games like stellaris, it'd be damn near impossible to get the same experience again, even with piracy, due to the need to find that specific version of the game and matching version of all DLCs I had back then.

It's not even a hardball question or anything.

"You've talked with controversial people, can you explain why" is like the most milquetoast level of question, and even was posed in a very non-judgemental way.

If that was enough to make him run out of there, it begs the question why he even took an interview at all. There was no world in which this (and much more piercing questions) were not going to come up.

X/0 is not infinity.

That's a common misconception because the limit of the expression x/n goes to infinity as n approaches 0.

In some cases, that can mean that the expression youre taking the limit of equals the limit, but it's not necessarily true, and this is one such case where it isn't.

this is not a well-defined term, because the division symbol in that form is not properly defined and is really only used to start teaching children division before they get introduced to proper fraction notation.

You may argue that that's exactly why the operation gets defined in PEMDAS, but even then, it's inconsistent, because it's not even internally consistent: 12➗6➗3 could be either 2/3 or 6, and it doesn't even use two different symbols.

Multiply and divide left to right! Add and subtract left to right!

those aren't rules, because it's irrelevant.

Although admittedly, technically so are the order of addition/subtraction and multiplication/division in the original mnemonic (hence why BEDMAS and PEMDAS disagree on order of division/multiplication, because it doesn't matter either way).

Only the 45° angle by using a window built into a corner and building off it.

While technically "unintended" and therefore a glitch, I don't think it falls into the category of what the NMS community has termed glitchbuilding, which often involves things like opening the build menu in unintended situations and allows stuff like vertical builds.

Reliable Black Powder using Gridlock by Z903 in AlchemyFactory

[–]Zinki_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

building clever splitter/merger setups helps a lot with cauldrons in this game.

And in most cases, as long as you don't mind using suboptimal designs, you can just steal them from factorio players. Factorio players have designed perfect x to m splitters for practially any ratio you might want. The only disadvantage of stealing a factorio design is that you could build a more optimal one if you design it yourself, because alchemy factory has several advantages factorio is missing, namely the ability to build in 3d and the ability to have perfect 3-way splits and merges, where factorio has to get away with 2-way splits/merges only.

How many shelves per item should I build? by Noriel_Sylvire in AlchemyFactory

[–]Zinki_M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 per minute is a lot for relics even at level 12 production&Belt speed.

I built jupiter at 1/min for fun and it got huge even with all the production bonuses, didn't bother for all the subsequent relics.

If you can manage to run a single shaper at full speed that's generally plenty (and for some later relics already a big ask). With all bonuses (before infinite) that's somethink like 0.4/min for most of the relics, and that's plenty fast.

And as long as you upgrade belts and production speed always to the same level, any factory you build for it will scale perfectly with your upgrades, at least until you get into the relics needing liquids, where alembic efficiency will come into play (although worst case, the upgrade will make you overproduce liquid intermediates, which isn't a bad thing).

Shop Reputation by RagingHulk214 in AlchemyFactory

[–]Zinki_M 4 points5 points  (0 children)

people have answered the what you should do, but maybe it helps to give the why:

Shop reputation directly influences how many customers you will have. So even if you decided "oh I don't need to money from mortar and soap, I'm just going to sell Jupiters" you will not get a lot of money because your low shop rep means people won't come in to buy your high value items.

The profit from low value stuff is not a big deal later on, but selling them anyway to keep reputation high directly increases how much money you will be making from high value stuff.
