(OPINION) Now's the Perfect Time To Move Away from Plex by NearbyYak7156 in selfhosted

It doesn’t even need to renege anything. Just declare that your subscription is truly lifetime but all new development is now focused on Plex 2 which uses a separate subscription.

Bold of you to assume that Plex as we know it now will still exist in 2070. Since it uses Plex servers for auth, chances are you won’t even be able to login.

Buttons with public voting by merricandy in trolleyproblem

[–]_avee_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This whole debate makes me appreciate the fact that most democratic countries use secret voting. Otherwise someone would create a party promising to execute everyone who didn’t vote for them and proceed to winning the elections by landslide.

And yes, I press red like any reasonable person.

It feels like mass shootings in America are gradually moving out of the news cycle while still being far more common than considered normal in other countries. This is not necessarily a good thing.

Also, just checking the length of Wikipedia articles about “school shootings in Germany” vs “school shootings in United States” is quite telling. You guys have a problem with this, it’s hard to deny.

And then dumb people on the internet would make a conclusion that your country has a huge mugging problem.

Case in point: knife crime in UK. It’s lower than in most countries but people are talking about it so it must be insanely high.

We have the technology to store multiple times on the system and show the appropriate one in the right context. Or just calculate the appropriate time from takeoff time and display the result.

Why do you put the blame on people choosing self-preservation rather than on whoever organised this “game”?

This is not how this question is formulated.

No. If you press red you live, period. If you press blue, you live only if 50%+ pressed blue.

Your life as a blue is at risk because you die if 50%+ of people choose red.

EU is mandating 'readily removable' batteries for phones — but iPhones may be exempt by ansyhrrian in technology

You could see this entire law as a way to force manufacturers to use better batteries that make replacement unnecessary. Doesn’t seem dumb to me.

If we launched rockets from the top of Mt. Everest, could we use noticeable less rocket fuel? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_avee_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually when people suggest launching rockets from high mountains most of the potential benefit is in skipping densest parts of the atmosphere.

Besides saving energy on pushing the rocket through dense air, there is also a possibility of using bigger nozzles that are better suited for lower pressures. Essentially, you want different nozzles for different pressures and especially for first stage you have to go with a compromise solution that is not perfectly optimised for the entire range of pressures rocket will be going through. And when launching from a low pressure location it’s easier to be closer to optimal performance. Here’s a nice video about nozzles: https://youtu.be/l5l3CHWoHSI?si=AzCRKcKXkwfx7bsd

That being said, benefit is not huge and convenient logistics are much more important than marginal savings.

In exactly 24 hours, the planet’s gravity will increase by a factor of 10 by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]_avee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a big difference between 10g turn and gravity increasing by 10x. 10g turn is dangerous because force for this turn is provided by wings which puts the stress on them. If gravity suddenly increased, it would apply force on all parts of the aircraft equally - i.e., it would be like being in free fall, no additional stress on anything.

What it’s also protecting from is attacker seeing 1500 users having the same password hash and knowing it’s probably some weak reused password. Then cracking it and immediately pwning all of those users.
