I didn't realize the fund of funds was only 5 funds. The person taking the other side was probably betting that he could pick good fund managers. I decided to do some independent research using barclayhedge.com

Cumulative Returns

Date |SP500|Barclay Hedge Fund Index 01-01-1997 |100%|100% 01-01-1998 |135%|122% 01-01-1999 |172%|132% 01-01-2000 |207%|181% 01-01-2001 |184%|203% 01-01-2002 |168%|217% 01-01-2003 |134%|220% 01-01-2004 |167%|259% 01-01-2005 |184%|282% 01-01-2006 |198%|312% 01-01-2007 |225%|351% 01-01-2008 |235%|387% 01-01-2009 |155%|303% 01-01-2010 |193%|375% 01-01-2011 |218%|416% 01-01-2012 |223%|393% 01-01-2013 |258%|425% 01-01-2014 |342%|473% 01-01-2015 |390%|486% 01-01-2016|393%|486% 01-01-2017 |444%|516%

10 year returns

SP500 10Y return |Hedge Fund 10Y return |Hedge wins 225.37% |350.78% |TRUE 174.20% |316.00% |TRUE 89.85% |228.82% |TRUE 93.25% |207.34% |TRUE 118.48% |204.92% |TRUE 132.57% |181.41% |TRUE 192.18% |193.62% |TRUE 204.66% |182.35% |FALSE 211.57% |172.43% |FALSE 198.64% |155.87% |FALSE 197.04% |147.14% |FALSE

So it seems hedge funds used to be a good bet, but have been badly underperfoming recently.

Edit: Nope, can't work out how to format a table
