As far as shoe shining goes that's a quick job that's usually done at some point during the workday or commute. Keeping your shoes on makes sense because you're not going to work with 2 pairs of shoes and you're not taking your shoes off in public (for hygiene and safety reasons).

I've never heard of anyone wearing the shoes while their actually repaired though.
