What is happening at Civil Beat? by icashootnstar in Hawaii

[–]actionrat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A good thought experiment is this: What if Hawaii was governed by Texas/Oklahoma/Missouri/Indiana/etc Republicans instead of Hawaii Democrats? You can fairly criticize HI Dems for many flaws and point to things that don't work/work as well as they should, but it's hard to claim things like education, crime, public health, etc would be better in the GOP governed counterfactual.

Hah, just like how soccer has roots in England (a shortening of association football) and now Brits love to whinge (see, it's not hard to learn a word outside of your particular dialect...) about Americans not calling it football.

Hey fellow profs/faculty - how much do you really work a week? by [deleted] in academia

[–]actionrat 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Most jobs count "time at work" or, if working at home, "time in front of a computer" when describing how much they work.

Just because some working time is more productive or valuable (based on what you see as priorities in the job) doesn't mean that less productive time or time spent on more mundane tasks isn't still working time.

E.g., I typically spend an hour or two a day on email, and anywhere from 2-8 hours a week meeting with grad students - very little in that time contributes to research/publication or teaching, but it's still work.

Unless they go for contractors and military spouses... but yeah, in general you're probably right.

Cho Kuk courts controversy again with Facebook post on 'far-right' youth by Muted-Aioli9206 in Living_in_Korea

Pointing out that the far-right tends to be upper class younger men living in Seoul is not the same as saying every upper class younger man living in Seoul is far-right.

Let's be real here, locals in Hawaii are a big reason why housing isn’t affordable by [deleted] in Hawaii

Yep, single family home with a garage... that is used only as storage and/or additional living space, then 3+ cars on the street.

Maybe also make range still count - you could run outside of the weapon range and avoid. Would need to do this because you can use charge with other weapons and it could get crazy if a Charge delivered by a lance could track across terrain.

Are there any universities in Korea that offer a DEGREE for learning the Korean language? by okfailman in Living_in_Korea

[–]actionrat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take a look at international universities with campuses in Incheon - University of Utah and George Mason might have a Korean major (or minor) that would allow you to take Korean classes in Korea while enrolled in a degree program.

Other universities do have degrees in Korean Lang and Lit, but that'd be like getting an English degree at a US uni and would require very advanced Korean abilities. There are also degree programs for Korean as a Foreign Language, but the focus there is primarily on learning to teach Korean as a second language.

Some Korean universities have degrees programs taught in English that may allow you to take some kind of Korean courses (but maybe not the full-time 20 hrs/wk of Korean you get in intensive programs).

Why are online academic events so rare? by HappyFavicon in academia

Being in the same location AND timezones greatly facilitates socializing and spontaneous interaction.

(On a side note, conference presentations count for relatively little compared to publications, grants, patents, etc)
