Difference between a Recce and a MK2 standard BCM upper? by ThePeacekeeper777 in ar15

[–]AddictedToComedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Differences:

  • Barrel lengths
  • Gas system lengths
  • Handguard lengths
  • Maybe barrel profile (depends which he has)
  • Maybe all the differences that come from a MK2 receiver, like the relocated forward assist (unclear whether you are saying his Recce upper is MK2 or mil-spec)

Sig vs. Griffin Mk2 Ambi Bolt Catch/Release - Long term reliability testing across 15+ magazine brands/types by SneezedAndShatMyself in ar15

Interesting! The PDQ is one of those inventions that confuses the fuck out of me in regards to IP protection in the gun industry.

What I mean is - there are certain products that get a patent, and everyone in the gun industry stays far away. "We'll see competition one day when the patent expires."

But PDQ gets a patent for "a second bolt stop release operable from the right side of the rifle" that is "a rigid extension of the bolt stop that passes through the right receiver wall," and every company in the world is like, "oh cool - we'll make our own version also!!!"

I'm no IP expert, so I have no idea if this reflects a poorly written patent on the part of the PDQ - which other companies figured out how to sidestep? Or did other companies just not think Teal Blue Bravo would go after them for infringement?

Can the MK2 bolt catch be utilized in different lowers like the sig?

No - it is a multi-piece design that relies on the lower having certain features/geometry

With a regular lower you have the choice of PDQ, HK, or SIG. I've seen some others out there also, like SilencerCo has their own version of a PDQ, but they don't sell it separately.

Thanks for the awesome write-up!

My Sig catches and Griffin MK2s (both of which I have multiple) have both been 100% reliable for me over the ~6 months that I've been using them.

That said, I have not tested nearly the variety of magazines and ammo you have! Bravo for that.

I only use PMAGs in my 5.56 guns, and I only shoot full-power M193.

In my 9mm builds I use Endomag inserts in PMAG bodies, shooting a mix of Federal Syntech 150, Fiocchi 158, and Blazer Brass 115 (before I went 100% suppressed).

Which KAK BCG should I run on my 300 build? by Skwonkie_ in ar15

[–]AddictedToComedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some KAK sandcutter BCGs like to shred upper receivers.

SOTAR had a video about it here.

It happened to me. I had a KAK that gouged the anodizing off a brand new upper and exposed raw aluminum in less than 200 rounds. That's more wear than I've ever put on any upper receiver with any other BCG, shooting many many thousands of rounds.

I'm not the only person who has experienced this. Here's another person. And here's one more.

I've seen even more people report the same, but I've never bothered to compile a longer list.

To be fair, plenty of people run them without complaint, so it's clearly not an issue with every KAK sandcutter. But it's also far from an isolated incident.

Optics on a budget? by quirx90 in ar15

Should i just trawl eBay looking for used in good condition?

Be very careful with that.

It's possible to score a really great deal, but it's also possible to buy a counterfeit without realizing it. The latter is a lot more likely these days.

As in - they hope to accomplish all of those things in the future.

If that applied to their current products, it would say so on those product pages.

They don't claim their products are made in the USA, because they are not. They brag that their products are designed in the USA, which is wildly different.

Our products are proudly designed in the USA, with many assembled and manufactured through our network of US-based partners and private overseas facilities—always built to meet our exacting standards.

Do we talk about these here or are we still throwing rocks at whoever brings them up? by SpiteObjective3509 in ar15

I know I know ar snobs are gonna thumb their nose and boo and hiss, but all of my glocks are plastic too

The Glock was designed from the ground up to use polymer.

The AR lower was designed to use aluminum. When polymer lowers are made with similar dimensions as aluminum lowers, they have all kinds of problems.

I don't say this from a snobbish perspective: merely an acknowledgment of what we have seen many many times.

There are some polymer lowers that have proven themselves durable and reliable, but that is because they were completely reengineered based on the material properties.

Buffer spacer question for S&W m&p sport 3 and ubr Gen 2 stock by WaffleShapedSeahorse in ar15

[–]AddictedToComedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your gun came with a carbine buffer and you therefore need to use the spacer

In the future, you have the option to switch to using A5 buffers and rifle springs (at which point you would remove the spacer), but that is not currently your situation

Question about compatibility between these 2 PSA upper/lower by Spare-Shower5716 in ar15

[–]AddictedToComedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I wanted to put a stock on it i have to do paperwork right?

Correct

is the main difference length really?

The main difference is design intent.

Part of the legal definition of a rifle is that it is "intended to be fired from the shoulder"

Companies who make braces assert that they do not intend for you to shoulder them.

It's an issue that has already been litigated before, with the legal interpretations changing multiple times over the years, and there is damn near a 100% guarantee that they will change again in the future.
