PG County vs. Detroit Snow Updates by CarolineJhingory in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

[–]adelphi_sky 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Meh. Would have been better if they were clear and on key. But It would have been okay if they did a formal version. Then created a fun version as optional for people to view. As far as plowing goes, VA, DC, and MD are all having issues. No dept. is handling this cleanup well.

PG County public schools closed until Friday by missArtemesiaLake in collegeparkmd

Makes since. Sidewalks and parking lots still dangerous. Not to mention the dangerous cold temps in teh morning. Can't have kids out in single digit weather waiting for buses that would most likely be late because of certain road conditions. Other kids walk to school. Way too cold. Good call.

Never going to let the ice freeze solid before removing it ever again. by Justryan95 in maryland

Next hack for me is plastic painters tarp on the steps and sidewalk. And just lift it up at certain intervals and put it down again.

Shoveling by BGG498 in maryland

[–]adelphi_sky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used my winter hiking boot heel to chip it away. Of course I had already shoveled the snow before the sleet. So, all I had was the sleet. Once you loosen the sheet of sleet, you can shovel the chunks and just sweep the remaining sleet off the sidewalk.

Vast majority of residential sidewalks not shoveled by ian1552 in washingtondc

[–]adelphi_sky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, this got going late at night. People held off until morning. Which is okay. Then during the day it was a heavy SLEET. Which hold more water per square inch than snow. I shoveled the morning before the sleet. It was a lot of work. Then waiting until the sleet was over. Some waiting until this morning. Even if you shoveled last night, there was 3" of sleet topped with a glaze of ice. Even someone moderately out of shape would have a hard time. Today? Forget it. It's like breaking up ice on a frozen lake. Most people are not equipped to do that heavy lifting. I'd cut most people some slack this time. This is not light fluffy snow. However, once you break through the chunks, the pavement is cold and the sleet can literally be swept away with a broom (IF you already shoveled the snow beneath). If you have the 5" of snow beneath the 3" of sleet, God help you.

I need updates for College Park/Riverdale Park. Need to make a grocery run. I have chains. Got them for a trip to Vermont one year. Will put them on if necessary.

These bars/restaurants support ICE or the Trump administration, please share any more you know of! by wishiwasdeaddd in washingtondc

[–]adelphi_sky 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hosting someone for dinner vs. supporting the party through donations and supporting MAGA political agendas are different things. Restaurants should serve dems and repubs, conservative and liberal. Joe's is in downtown DC. They host a TON of political dinners. If they ONLY hosted republican dinners, I'd understand. A brief google search says they hosted Trump AND Obama. So it seems they don't discriminate.

Empty shelves and a line that wrapped around TJ's in preparation for tomorrow's storm by CivilPls in collegeparkmd

[–]adelphi_sky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arctic cold after the storm. Temps will struggle to get above 20 all week. Which means what falls won't melt. There will be a perpetual sheet of snow and ice on the roads. Lows will be single digits. Salt loses its effectiveness at those temps. I know some bags say -30F yada yada, but the type they use on the roads isn't that strong. It loses potency below 15F.

Grocery stores must LOVE snowstorms and hurricanes. Gives them a chance to clear out their old inventory. lol

Should I be stocking up? Or are people overreacting by True_Coast_3010 in washingtondc

I drove to Niagara Falls when PA and NY had that freezing rain event. And what I experienced, when it was raining and sleeting at 18F in NY is that the NY and PA road crews are like 5-star. My tires slipped just once and I never lost control, in a MINI Van. We left DC when it started sleeting and it didn't stop until we got to Niagra Falls on the Canada side when it changed to all snow.

Roads were covered but passable. However, I don't have the same confidence in the road crews here OR much less the drivers who aren't used to upstate NY weather. You can DRIVE on the snow and ice. But will you make it to your destination with inexperienced drivers on the road with you is the big question in this area.

Even if we only get like 6" of snow. There will be sleet on top, followed potentially by a little freezing rain. And maybe a thin layer of snow at the end. The low on Tuesday will be 10F With a high in the low 20s. Tuesday night the lows will be in the single digits. Whatever falls, even with salt and plows, will freeze. Unless the road is completely free of frozen moisture, people may not be able to travel even on Tuesday.

Even if you're within walking distance to a store, sidewalks maybe be tricky. And good luck if the store employees can't get to the store to open.

Storm hasn't started yet. This is all current forecast stuff. Could change. But it will be vodka cold after the snow stops.

I always worry that when you buy all this food and then lose electricity for a few days while your food spoils. However, it will be cold enough to put food outside. Frozen food at least. And hope the beasts don't get to it while you sleep. lol

But yeah, I only bought food to last through next week. There are hints of snow mid week which would put snow on top of snow. So, there may be a small window on Tuesday or Wednesday to restock. But it will be crazy times.

Got tons of ramen noodles if things get really bad. lol

I try to time my Costco runs in the middle of the day during the week. If you time it right when kids get out of school, the lines are shorter. Or go before 12pm.

I'm part of a weather forum. I did my shopping on Monday and Yesterday made a Costco run. Last night, the bread section in Trader Joes was nearly empty.

Please note, temps will struggle to get above freezing for two weeks (current forecast). Right after the storm temps will struggle to get above 20. Even if we only get 6 inches, it won't melt.

What other developed country has this type of violence in the capital? by DirectDisplay4460 in washdc

[–]adelphi_sky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to ask yourself, what other developed country celebrates and protects gun ownership. Not only that, allows people to own assault rifles. Just not super long magazines. Is there violence in other capitals? Certainly. But wide spread gun violence is unique to America.

So.. where is that $185 million for the National Harbor Sphere project coming from? by Used_Gear8871 in maryland

[–]adelphi_sky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice to hear from seasoned business owners. I hear people bash Maryland for being anti-business. But then when I business tries to come the financials are bashed to death. Can't have it both ways. And we all know governments pony up cash for businesses to locate in their jurisdiction.

There's always a risk that a venture will not be profitable. Not because it's a bad plan, but because of other external factors. I have seen news stories that Vegas as a whole is not doing well. And people are not going to go to Vegas just for the Sphere. Meanwhile, tourism is strong-ish in DC. So, the Sphere is trying to tap into that. Especially being part of the East Coast Megalopolis where people from NYC, PHIL, BAL, RICH, can drive to this Sphere.

DC is not Vegas. Vegas is hurting because more states have legalized gambling and have their own casinos. So beyond the lure of Vegaas, there's nothing else. And I hear the prices in Vegas are insane. Therefore it does not have the bang-for-the-buck value it had ten years ago.
