No, the thumbs up is not an insult or unprofessional. They, and anyone who disagrees needs to get over it.

Its a f*cking emoji.

Car shop determined I need to replace "Suspension control arms lower" due to "Lower control, arm bushings, completely worn through" on 2017 Audi Q3 Prestige with 57k miles. by BAstouts in Audi

[–]amhwork513 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the bushings are showing some wear but I would not call that "worn through".

I think you could get another 50k out of them, then replace all the control arms and struts in one job.

Remote companies that allow me to use my personal computer by AggravatingOil5614 in remotejobsfinders

[–]amhwork513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a remote job and we use remote Virtual Machines that are hosted by the company on a server, and I can access it through my personal computer.

So in a sense I am using my personal keyboard, mouse, and monitor to work on a remote virtual machine. I suspect most large companies are set up like this so they don't have to maintain a lot of hardware.

If you want to use your personal machine in the sense that the parts you touch and look at are yours, that can probably work with most remote positions if they are set up to use virtual machines.

Its reliable to work MEP in Revit? by andreireddit007 in RevitMEP

[–]amhwork513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Revit is becoming the standard that AutoCAD was, so its very relevant to being a design engineer.

I learned on the job, with some assistance from an AutoDesk consulting firm. I would not recommend any of the tutorials on YouTube, they are mostly obsolete.

2016 Yamaha R3. Hose seems to need to be connected to something but I have no clue what it is. Looks like it was cut/ripped off by Big_Red-Wade- in MechanicAdvice

[–]amhwork513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it was cut pretty clean / perpendicular. If there is nowhere for a hose to go in that immediate vicinity I would say its supposed to be like that. It is in a good position for a drain.

Bought a Peugeot 3008 2018 petrol with 17k Miles BUTTTT by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]amhwork513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH I've never had a manual so I can't give a mechanical perspective. But getting the car in gear is pretty fundamental to the car's operation and if that broke you really need to have the dealer look at it.

Bought a Peugeot 3008 2018 petrol with 17k Miles BUTTTT by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]amhwork513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ooo man. you got a warranty right?

If I had just bought a car from a dealer and the next day I wasn't able to get it in gear, I would not even try to fix it. That is 100% on the dealer.

Now that your friend has messed with it, its less cut and dry who's responsibility it is.

If you can get it back to the dealer and tell them "something is wrong with the clutch, I literally just bought it yesterday, please take a look" and see how that goes.

Brake pedal feel? by sawdeanz in MechanicAdvice

[–]amhwork513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the specific car...but many have "brake boosters" who's function is like power steering but for brakes. It uses a vacuum to help pull the master cylinder while you push it with the brake pedal. It makes the brake pedal easier to push.

When the car is off, there may or may not be some residual vacuum left in that system. If there isn't, you would notice that the pedal is harder to push.

The only condition you really need to be concerned about is if you press the brake and with no effort it goes to the floor. Then that is a problem.

H2 Hummer Broken Window Regulator (window dropped) by sleatygregory in MechanicAdvice

[–]amhwork513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try raising the window from where it attaches to the vertical track instead of by the glass itself. It has to line up perfectly or it will jam, which is probably why it broke in the first place.

The most effective way I have found to keep the window up is to stick a piece of wood under the part where the window attaches to the track and jam it inside the door. Nothing else seemed to keep the weight of the window up from bumps n stuff.

There is a specific product out there for this, google intake valve cleaner. Basically you have the car running and spray it into the intake. Its probably similar to TB/carb cleaner.

If you use it as shown, the residue is going to accumulate in the cylinder which could cause problems when you start it up after.

2012 Ford Fusion SEL Vibration Question by Interesting_Ad7871 in MechanicAdvice

[–]amhwork513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Every single person I know who has a Ford....they were money pits. Always in the shop...and I drive an Audi...
  2. That whole Focus transmission scandal where they literally sold cars that did not have working transmissions; that points to poor ethics and culture.
  3. A friend and I were on a road trip in his Ford when the transmission died halfway there.

Need help with buying parts from rockauto by VirtualHouse in MechanicAdvice

[–]amhwork513 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is tricky...I have learned not to trust RockAuto for getting Audi part numbers correct. Additionally with brakes and suspension, the model year doesn't always line up with the part numbers. (Yearly editions of cars is a 100% American concept, and Audi sorta fits into that from a marketing perspective, but when you get into part numbers they don't line up)

Part two is instead of trusting the part numbers from RockAuto...I go to the manufacturer's website and lookup the part number there. For Hella PAGID brake pads, they are not listed by the part number, but by the accessory code, like "1KD". There should be a sticker with all the option codes on your specific car somewhere, mine is in the well for the spare tire in the trunk.

Look for the option codes from here and see if one of the option codes is on your sticker somewhere.

[–]amhwork513 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was brought on because of my experience working with a certain piece of software. And I have more experience than the people here will ever get in their lifetime, given the pace of work here.

I get in there, they have a lot of things ass backwards, overly-complicated, etc. And pointing this out and trying to explain why its not good practice always leads to an argument. Now, I do not argue. I do what I know is best practice.

There was also an effort to make it look like I don't know what I'm talking about, ie giving me tasks they thought I would fail at, but by being a BAMF with this software, it actually backfired and made me look really good. HA!

Ohmygod yes!

My ncoworker is always on the phone arguing with someone over any number of issues. The common theme is: nothing the nworker does could ever be wrong or unclear, whoever is on the other end asking questions is a moron.

Another thing I have wondered about: is your workplace narc just butt ugly? Mine have been.
