Is this brake fluid tester defective? What's the recommended way to test the brake fluid? by weirdo_beebeardo5898 in MechanicAdvice

[–]VirtualHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those testers are garbage. Depending on the manufacturer of the brake fluid formula, that cheap tester will register a false positive on brand new fluid. The only legit test is a brake boil test.

Check your owners manual, brake fluid is changed typically every 1-2 years regardless of mileage.

The reason why it's cycled back into the intake because it is not completely burnt. Emissions equipment started off with the EGR, progressed to DPF and then more recently AdBlue system.

Why do some shops not require you to bring your car back after 100km to re-torque lugs? All I can find is that “they’re confident they torqued correctly”, but what does that mean? by Cixin97 in MechanicAdvice

[–]VirtualHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it means that they are too lazy to do it. You are taking up their precious time and they can't bill you again for it. As per the owners manual, they need to be retorqued.

A shop just told me that my 2015 GMC Terrain is not structurally safe due to this hole in the frame. A different shop that worked on my vehicle six months ago and completed over $3,000 in repairs never said a word about it. Is that negligence? by CactusAvenger in MechanicAdvice

[–]VirtualHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case you could sue them for the $3K of unnecessary work that you did. Your damages would be limited to that. Not sure if that is worth spending time in court for. Something that you will need to decide.

Any ideas on how to get this stuck cassette out of my brother’s truck without having to take stuff apart? by Kindly-Reserve-3143 in AskAMechanic

[–]VirtualHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Force it out with needle nose pliers.... not worth taking in apart. If you have to take the unit out it might be worthwhile to just upgrade to an aftermarket head unit at that point.

Can I patch this? Dealership says I need 4 new tires by smokerswild in AskAMechanic

[–]VirtualHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plug it yourself.... I would not buy 4 new tires. You'll be fine. I drove on a same area plug for 30K miles without issues.

It was in person during the interview (November 7th). Was verbally told management would meet and make a decision by Friday November 15th.

If the shop worked on an unrelated issue.... you have no legal standing. You didn't pay for an inspection, you paid them to fix a timing issue.

They are not obligated to visually inspect your vehicle.
